Design of oil paintings in mats and frames. Decorating paintings – framing workshop services

Decorate the picture beautifully in a baguette. It will look complete. A baguette will add richness, brightness and value to a work of art. To create an attractive painting, you should adhere to the following rules:

The baguette is matched to the painting, not to the interior elements

The picture can be hung as much as you like, but the frame stays with it for a long time. The baguette serves as a complement to the picture, so they should not compete with each other. Important signs of choosing the right baguette:

  • compatibility with the painting in terms of color scheme;
  • baguette pattern and texture repeat or complement the motifs drawn in the painting;
  • the picture's design smoothly transfers onto the frame.

The possibilities for baguette decor are endless. A well-chosen frame will help decorate a large canvas and will not allow a small photo to get lost. At the same time, the design of paintings in a baguette can consist only of a frame, or it can be more complex and include the following elements:

  • passe-partout;
  • edging for passe-partout;
  • backdrop;
  • glass;
  • rolling the image onto the base;
  • lamination;
  • embossing

Types of framing frames and their features

  • Wooden frames:
    • look natural;
    • durable (will withstand large paintings in glass);
    • large assortment (oak, beech, alder, walnut).
  • Plastic frames:
    • imitate wood: natural, painted, gilded, silver;
    • low cost compared to wood;
    • resistant to moisture;
    • lungs.
  • Aluminum frames:
    • fashionable, especially in high-tech rooms;
    • baguette width from 7 to 50 mm;
    • the surface is shiny, matte or textured;
    • about 40 colors;
    • graceful (face profile can be from 7 mm);
    • durable and resistant to moisture;
    • lungs.
  • for small paintings you need a wide baguette (the area of the baguette should be larger than the area of the picture);
  • paintings painted in warm shades require a baguette of warm tones, cold picture shades need cold baguette tones;
  • a simple baguette frame is needed for paintings with simple lines;
  • The main thing to remember is that the picture should dominate, and the frame only connects the picture with the interior;
  • the baguette should be half a tone lighter or darker than the main color in the picture; you can also make the frame in a color that matches the secondary color in the painting;
  • a baguette in the color scheme of natural wood goes with almost every picture;
  • The style of the painting must match the baguette:
    • the avant-garde is not framed in a classic wide stucco frame;
    • Dutch painting cannot be decorated with a modern glossy narrow frame in color;
  • The depth of the baguette should also be taken into account.

If the picture is painted in dark colors, then there should be a light stripe between the baguette and the canvas, it will calm the colors, and the whole work will sparkle. Conversely, if the picture is too light (winter is depicted), then you can use a silver frame with a mat in dark green or dark blue.

Basic ways to choose a passe-partout

  • paintings depicting movement require a wide mat, especially when the perspective of the painting extends beyond the border of the frame;
  • the frame cannot merge with the mat;
  • the color of the mat should be slightly darker than the lightest shade in the picture;
  • The bottom of the passe-partout is made wider than the top and sides:
    • a vertical picture requires a wider top than the sides;
    • a horizontal picture requires wider sides than the top;
    • a square picture needs identical sides and top of the mat, and the bottom should be wider.

It is important to remember that the passe-partout only connects the picture, the frame and the interior. Most often, mats are made with a width of 60 mm. It looks great if you put a slip - a narrow strip of baguette - on the edge of the passe-partout. When choosing a baguette and mat, you need to look at the picture in the interior in which it will be located. You need to take into account the tone of the walls, the style of furniture and the level of lighting. A little more difficult, if several paintings will be placed on the wall, their frames should not compete with each other.

If you want to emphasize the beauty and depth of a work of art, undoubtedly the best solution is to order the painting to be framed. A correctly selected frame will help to fully reveal the artist’s creative intent, convey the brightness and expressiveness of shades, and significantly extend the life of the canvas. It is no coincidence that even among artists of the 19th century there was an unspoken rule: paintings that are not framed cannot be presented to the public.

How much does it cost to frame a painting?

Anyone who wants to frame a painting is probably interested in the question of what the order price consists of. Several factors influence the final cost of the work:

  • Material. You can order a picture frame made of metal or natural wood.
  • The metal frame is durable and lightweight. This picture frame will fit perfectly into an interior decorated in a modern style. The wooden frame looks natural and at the same time very elegant. The unique texture of natural wood and warm shades will bring an atmosphere of comfort to the interior of your home.
  • Frame size. We make custom-made frames for large paintings, as well as miniature versions. It is worth considering that small-sized canvases will look especially impressive in wide frames.
  • Decorative design and type of coating (film, varnish, etc.). The choice of the appropriate option is carried out in accordance with the features of the picture.

  • place images of different sizes and shapes in the same or the same frame style;
  • the reverse technique - an ordered series of images placed in frames contrasting in color, profile, ornament (but uniform in style and size) - also works, but requires careful study and caution when choosing, otherwise it is easy to “steal” the interior into kitsch.

Elements of a modern interior: decoration with paintings, photo panels and posters

A rational approach to space and the functionality of each of its elements are, perhaps, the main principles of modern interior design. When decorating an office or apartment in a modern way, lightness and simplicity are important: the key materials of the elements are glass, metal, artificial composite materials. One of its main features is the desire for openness of space: often zoning is done only by details and elements of furniture, therefore, when choosing wall images, as a rule, more often pay attention to their proportions and the dominant color of the drawing or photograph. In open interiors, when decorating walls with paintings, panels or posters, it is recommended to use color contrasts and large drawings to add dynamics and complexity to the space, arranging images in a minimalist frame design or doing without a frame entirely.

In modern living spaces, when decorating an apartment or living room with paintings, choose a baguette of the simplest shapes to match the image or contrast. In the first case, the frame “plays in unison” with the image itself, which, as a rule, is the color accent of the interior; in the second, it itself is a bright spot of color that attracts attention. Most often, metal is used for framing: the thin silver lines of metal frames easily limit the image without weighing it down, and their “maximum minimalism” is perfectly combined with the principles of modern design.

When following the basic principles of style, you need to remember the most important thing: rules are there to be broken. Sometimes deliberate disregard for principles creates solutions of amazing beauty and integrity, making the interior unique and memorable. In the end, all modern trends in design were once “born” from a violation of what had become classical canons.

We create the mood: we select paintings for interiors in accordance with their purpose

There are images that are neutral in perception and can be used to decorate almost any interior, unmistakably fitting into the habitable space. On the other hand, a well-chosen canvas can not only add coziness to a room, but also “correct” the emotions and sensations of its inhabitants. To decorate the rooms for different purposes, themes are selected that directly or indirectly resonate with the purpose of the rooms. The ideal choice would be one that emphasizes or enhances the emotions “necessary” for this particular interior. For example, a typical choice for a bedroom is neutral in style and soothing, relaxing compositions; however, by decorating your bedroom with nude style posters you can achieve the very opposite effect. Generally speaking, the walls of residential premises, whose purpose is to be a refuge and a “safe haven”, a place of rest from external negativity, be it a kitchen, a bedroom or an office, are decorated with scenes that are calm in all respects. For more “active” residential and public areas (living rooms, offices, classrooms, etc.), you can choose stronger “emotion generators”.

Important! Whatever the choice, the basic rule must be observed: the art object should not evoke negative emotions in the observer.

Framing a photograph in a baguette is one of the best opportunities to emphasize the dignity of a photograph. A photo in a frame will decorate and enliven any interior. Interior decoration with photographs is modern, stylish and comfortable.

When you have decided which photo to design, the next question arises: how to do it? It would seem that there are not so many basic ways to decorate a baguette. This is either just a photograph framed in a baguette, or a photograph in a baguette with a passe-partout. But in reality, the options are endless. It all depends on the image in the photograph, the place where it will hang, as well as on what problems you solve by placing the photograph in the interior. Designing a photograph is as much a creative process as the photography itself. It's all up to you. And our task is to help you in this process.

What can be packaged in a baguette?

As a rule, paintings and photographs are placed in a baguette. Posters, tapestries, diplomas, geographical maps, silk painting, embroidery, mirrors, coins, certificates and even monitors and TV front panels can also be decorated. Drawings in watercolors, gouache, pastels, as well as graphics can be decorated, like photographs, using mats. But oil painting is not usually designed in this way. If the painting is painted (or printed) on canvas, then the canvas must first be stretched onto a stretcher and then placed in a baguette frame.

Main types of baguette design

1. Image + framing frame.
A baguette frame gives the image completeness, so this is the main design option for a photograph or painting. The baguette must be selected so that it matches the photograph - they must be in the same style, while the image must remain the key, and the frame must be the finishing touch. As a rule, small-format photographs are framed in a wide baguette, while large-format images will look great in a narrow baguette frame.

2. Image + mat + baguette frame.
The second most popular type of photograph design is with a mat. Passepartout is thick cardboard of different colors and textures. The mat has a purely decorative function - it is located between the baguette frame and the image and serves to enhance the visual perception of the photograph. If you want to design your work in a particularly original way, you can use double or triple mats - when mats are placed one on top of the other, creating a volume effect.

3. Image + deep mat + baguette frame.
Deep passe-partout is one of the types of passe-partout. The thickness of the cut of such a mat is much larger than a standard mat, making the image look a little “recessed” into the depths of the work. You can combine a deep mat with a regular or double mat, play with the color scheme, texture and width of the mat.

4. Image + glass mat + baguette frame.
This design option is very rare, we can say that it is an extravagant option. In this case, the color of the fill in the space between the framing frame and the photograph is determined by the wall on which the work will be located. Glass passe-partout can also serve as an interesting decoration for photographs suspended in the air.

5. Image + mat + decorative edging + baguette frame.
A decorative edging is a wooden or plastic strip that can go along the edge of a baguette frame or frame an image, separating it from the mat. The edging adds a special decorative effect to the framing work. There are smooth and carved, polished and tinted, as well as aged edgings of different colors and shades.

Paintings are a wonderful element of interior design. Hung on the walls, painted in a variety of techniques, landscapes, still lifes and portraits complement the decoration of the rooms. However, the paintings themselves need a worthy frame that will present them in the most favorable light. Our material today will tell you how to choose a brilliant cut for picturesque diamonds.

It is important to remember that in the tandem “picture and its frame” the main role goes to the image. The frame should not overshadow the picture, but emphasize its beauty. When choosing a baguette (a strip used to make frames), consider several important points. First of all, the baguette should suit not so much the interior as the picture itself. Of course, you shouldn’t hang a carved gilded frame in an apartment decorated in hi-tech style, but otherwise, focus on the style of the pictorial image.

The appearance of the baguette is largely determined by the colors and style in which the picture is painted. A classic canvas will look great in a carved wooden frame, but for an abstract work you will have to look for a more modern option.

Take a closer look at the painting style: if the painting has a lot of smooth strokes and there are plant motifs, then a frame with a similar ornament will be suitable. And, on the contrary, for a canvas in which rational geometric structures play a key role, you should choose a strict baguette.

As for the color scheme, it all depends on the colors used in the image. If warm colors predominate, then a golden, brown, bronze frame will be the best solution. For cold tones, gray, black, bluish baguette is suitable.

Don't let the frame and the image merge: you shouldn't make them contrasting, but you shouldn't go tone on tone either. The frame is designed to set off the image: if beige predominates in the picture, choose a baguette at least a tone darker or lighter.

If you want to decorate your painting in an original way, a frame made of composite baguettes will come to your aid. It is created from planks of different thicknesses, resulting in a rather voluminous structure. The outer layer of the frame will be more noticeable and wide, which will attract attention, and the inner, simpler and narrower, will smooth out the transition between the image and the impressive baguette, preventing the picture from getting lost against this background.

To frame small paintings, it is recommended to choose a frame that is larger than the area of the painting in size. In order to ensure the connection between the frame and the image, you will need a mat - a sheet of thick cardboard, in the center of which the picture is placed.

The passe-partout should not blend in color with either the frame or the image. Often, in order to more clearly delimit the space, a slip is inserted between the mat and the painting - a narrow decorative element that serves as a kind of miniature frame. The slip is made of wood or plastic and decorated as desired. Sometimes it can also be seen between the mat and the outer frame.

If you plan to hang a whole group of photographs or paintings in one place, you should not make the baguette too wide. A narrow frame without any special decorations will come in handy here.

For a large canvas that is destined to occupy a central place in the interior composition, a wide baguette will be most appropriate. Sometimes small paintings are also inserted into wide frames, but without a mat: in this way, a visual effect of depth is achieved when the image stands out due to the fact that it is in the center.

When making baguettes, wood, plastic, and less often aluminum are used (this option is ideal for modern examples of fine art, as well as for black and white photographs). When choosing a tree, be prepared to carefully monitor the humidity in the room: many species do not tolerate humidity changes well and can dry out.

Of course, a picture can be framed without using a frame. If the image is applied to canvas, you simply need to cover the stretcher with canvas and secure it so that the corners of the structure are also covered.

But this is just one way, while framing workshops offer hundreds of design options using a wide range of decorative elements. The choice is yours.
