Conversation with Bishop of Smolensk and Vyazemsk Panteleimon (Shatov)

How should a Christian deal with difficulties, how not to forget about others, when he himself has problem after problem? Memorized formulas stop working when deprivation affects you directly.
We asked the head of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Ministry, Bishop Panteleimon (Shatov), to comment on the situation emerging due to economic turmoil and advise how a Christian should perceive what is happening and how not to forget about mercy.

Vladyka, how does the growing economic crisis affect the people you know, your employees, parishioners, acquaintances? What worries people, how do they react to what is happening, and what do you advise them?
- There are people who, when difficulties arise, begin to be afraid, worry, and ask what to do. Some of our benefactors have now greatly reduced their donations. The employees are worried and worried, because if this continues, we will have to close some of our projects. For example, we are already thinking about abandoning the opening of an orphanage for disabled children, although we have been preparing for this event for a long time. We are thinking about what else we will have to cut. Even money for salaries may run out in February. There's a lot to worry about.

But there are people who rejoice in the crisis and say: “Now real life begins!” A heroic life, which will require new decisions from us, will require us to reconsider all our projects, think about where we can save on something, recycle something, where else to look for money for what already exists. Such people say: the time has come when you need to think not only about yourself.
And they are happy! You can hear from them that crises are useful, because if they did not exist, we would very quickly turn into philistines, prosperous, accustomed to comfort, attached to the blessings of this world. And difficult times help us understand that life is temporary and there is no need to become attached to anything earthly. You need to become attached not to security, not to comfort, but to Christ’s poverty, and in this poverty there is beauty and freedom. And when a person loses something materially, he gains freedom.

Is there some general “recipe” for how to survive yourself and at the same time not forget about your neighbor, not to forget when it’s not easy for yourself and, it would seem, you don’t care about other people’s troubles?
- There is a wonderful recipe - it is, however, quite long - this is the Gospel.
It seems to me that a crisis is a time of revealing the evil that is always present in the world, but somehow does not concern us. In Africa, people die of hunger, in Ukraine they die in civil war, in hospitals in Moscow a huge number of people suffer from cancer, poor mothers do not have money to cure their sick children, some kind of disaster happens all the time. Evil in the world is inescapable, it’s just that we often live in conditions where we find ourselves not involved in suffering. But this is a false feeling. Evil is simply hidden. And it is present in the world not only in the form of suffering, but in the form of our passions, sins, lack of love...
Therefore, a crisis is the identification of what is always there in the world, but often does not directly concern us. And when it does, we begin to look at life more realistically, we are not deluded by illusions, we awaken from the slumber into which some of our dreams plunge us.
And in such difficult moments it becomes clear what a person is like. Here comes a crowd in the subway, it would seem that the people are all the same, but if some trouble happens, they are immediately divided into cowards, scoundrels on the one hand, and heroes on the other.
Our whole life, all of human history is a crisis that has dragged on for tens or hundreds of thousands of years! This is the reality we live in, and difficult circumstances remind us of it.
Therefore, the “recipe” is to follow the commandments of Christ: the commandments about love, about prayer, the beatitudes; those commandments that Saint John the Baptist gave when he baptized people in the Jordan River: if you have two clothes, share with someone who has none, do the same with food.
Unfortunately, in favorable conditions we forget about this. But in a crisis, when there are more people in need around us, some people, on the contrary, begin to experience a spiritual upsurge: they strive to find those in need and help them. And they perceive this time as a time of achievement, of special spiritual joy, because there are many more people around whom they can take care of than in prosperous times. Someone needs spiritual support, someone needs material support, someone needs work: you can try to create new jobs, you can become a volunteer, which are always needed.

In recent years, the church social ministry has come a long way; it managed to withstand the previous crisis - 2008. What are you preparing for and what are you counting on now?
- More than 1,200 people are under our constant care - the care of the Mercy service. These are the people we care about every day: orphans, the disabled, the elderly, the seriously ill, the homeless. They are assisted by about 600 of our employees and about 1,500 volunteers. In addition, we receive about 100 one-time requests for help every day. Our budget has been cut by one third in recent months (not to mention the price increases). Some of our donors have reduced their donations, and we fear that things will only get worse. Therefore the situation is difficult. In a similar situation in 2008, we encouraged people to donate one percent of their income to charitable causes. And now we hope for our “Friends of Charity”, we hope that they will attract new friends. And December 2014 showed that this hope is not unfounded: if we usually collect an average of 3 million rubles a month, no more, then in December they donated 7 million to us - and this is a record. So we hope that more people will come forward to help.
And besides, for us, the crisis is a reason to tighten our belts, save more, make more informed decisions when organizing social assistance, and use the organizational resources that we have in reserve.
But our main hope, of course, is in God. God will not abandon us. We believe this and pray. And this is our main hope.

Mercy in crisis: what is important to know

Private donors come to the fore

World practice is such that private donations are more or less independent of crises. Many private donors - the so-called. private donors give more often and even more than usual at this time, realizing that it is difficult for everyone, and who will help if not them. In Russia, the concept of charity is predominantly different: the main budget of most foundations is made up of money from corporate donors, i.e. companies. And in a crisis, they are the ones who suffer. 5,000 people donating 100 rubles a month can easily make a budget for the fund, but for this it needs to do a lot of serious work to attract and retain regular private donors.

You can help with professional skills

Volunteers are always in demand! There are different categories of volunteers. “Hands and feet volunteers” for beneficiaries go to hospitals to visit their wards, go to orphanages, nursing homes, clean, entertain, etc. “Hands and feet volunteers” for the foundation help deliver documentation and organize events. Volunteer fundraisers are looking for money for the fund. And trial volunteers help the foundation with their professional knowledge and skills: these are IT specialists, lawyers, designers, those who print products for the foundation for free, shoot promotional videos, etc.

Fraudsters become more active during a crisis
In a crisis, there is more crime in all areas; charity does not stand out much here. For example, the resource dobro.mail.ru (“Do not help professional beggars”, “How to recognize a fake foundation”), miloserdie.ru (article by Vladimir Berkhin “How to recognize fraudsters in charity: instructions for citizens”) writes about how to recognize scammers ").

Pay attention to those who find it more difficult to raise money
An adult patient or a person whose operation is one in a long series, someone for whom it is not a matter of life and death, or someone who needs lifelong drug therapy, is not helped as readily as children who need a one-time operation.
It is very difficult for systemic projects to survive - those that are aimed at helping a whole group of people, at qualitatively changing the situation. These projects are incomprehensible. For example, few people will give money for psychological seminars for parents of children with osteogenesis imperfecta. Meanwhile, for a child, this is a choice between a wheelchair and a normal lifestyle. The donor always has the right to choose! But if you want to help, it’s useful to have all the information.
