Yellow plus red what color do you get? Color mixing features: acrylic and oil paints

In order to get dark, light or red-brown paint, you can resort to mixing the three main colors of the spectrum - red, blue (cyan) and yellow in one proportion or another. In practice, you mix only two basic tones to get brown, and then add the third to give one or another shade, and in addition the rest are used. We will tell you below how this happens and in what proportions, and in addition, we will watch a thematic video in this article as a supplement.

Five ways

Note. So, we already understand from which paints to get brown, but besides this, there are still various ways.

The most popular of them will be listed below.

  1. The first way is to mix the orange and blue components with your own hands.
  2. The next method involves pairing red with green.
  3. The third option is to obtain brown from purple and yellow.
  4. Obtaining the desired color in an additional way.
  5. Mixing the main spectrum to obtain the desired shade.

Method No. 1

  1. Let's see how to get a brown paint color and first we get an orange tone and for this the instructions are as follows: we will need red and yellow, where the first is allocated approximately 90%, and the second - 10% (you can vary a little, depending on the need, but you need a dark orange color). Try to ensure that the output solution is much closer to red than to yellow.
  2. Pour a little blue into the resulting mixture - its volume will be from 5% to 10% of the total composition, that is, for 90-95g of orange you need, respectively, 10-5g of blue composition. Increase the percentage until the mixture acquires a chocolate tone (if the solution is too light, add a little more blue).
  3. Please note that you will finally be able to figure out what the result will be only after the film has dried, but in any case, it will be much lighter than in the original state. Therefore, you can do a test on any surface, and then adjust the depth using blue or orange.

Method No. 2

  1. Now let's see how to make brown from the paints shown in the top photo - red and green. If you do not have the last shade, then you can make it by combining equal shares. You will adjust the brightness by the amount of one or another paint, that is, make the ratio not fifty-fifty, but slightly changing the proportion of one or another component, depending on your need.
  2. After this, we begin to add the red component to the resulting solution until it darkens to the desired degree.

Advice. Any brown mineral paint, exterior or interior, will be warmer if it has a slightly greenish tint.

Method No. 3

  1. We continue to consider how to get brown color from paints, and in in this case we need to mix yellow and purple, but the former may not always be available, so you can make it yourself. To do this, we mix red and blue in equal shares and so we get a dark, saturated solution of violet (do not forget that violet is located between blue and red in the color spectrum).
  2. Add yellowness little by little to the resulting mixture, just take your time so that you don’t end up with a too light solution - to do this you need to constantly stir the composition and this way you can control the proportions. For correction, you can slightly change the percentage, but it is best to do this after testing on any surface. The mixture can be used for both mineral surfaces and metal.

Method No. 4

  1. The fourth way to get brown paint is to spontaneously mix three primary colors, that is, first you pour two equal parts of two of them into one container, and then gradually add a third, getting the shade you need. In this case, the result will not be entirely predictable, since it will be difficult for you to adjust the proportions, but if you are making a solution that is enough for the entire painting area, then this is quite suitable for you.
  2. Also, to obtain a certain gray-brown or pure tone, you can mix previously obtained more or less dark mixtures, gradually reaching the parameters you need. In such cases, you can still fix what color you get by merging different proportions, but this path is more experimental than practical.

Method No. 5

  1. And now we will learn how to make brown paint from all available primary colors, gradually adding one after another until the consistency required in this case. First, take two dark shades, mixing them in equal proportions, and after that add exactly the same proportion of black. Now, we add the same percentage of red to the resulting solution, and we bring this entire composition to a single color - if you do this in large quantities, then the most acceptable result can be achieved when working with a mixer clamped into an electric drill.
  2. Now all that remains is to find the desired shade, for which we use the yellow component. There is no longer any clear indication of its quantity; simply, the more there is, the lighter the composition will be.

Note. When preparing brown, you should keep in mind that the primary colors here are red, blue and yellow, and the rest will be secondary. Even among the three main colors, only two colors will be primary, and the third will be secondary or auxiliary.

Conclusion

It’s not always possible to buy the right shade in a store, and it’s not even the price, but their banal absence. For example, dark brown paint can have a green or red tint, so when making your own desired color, you can always achieve the best result (

Every person who has ever held a brush and paint in his hand knows that you can get a lot of shades from two or three colors. The rules for mixing and matching colors are determined by the science of coloristics. Its basis is the color wheel known to many. There are only three primary colors: red, blue and yellow. Other shades are obtained by mixing and are called secondary shades.

What colors of paint should be mixed to get brown?

Brown is considered complex; when creating it, you can use all the primary colors. There are several ways to get brown:

  • Classic: green + red in proportions 50:50.
  • The main trio: blue + yellow + red in equal quantities.
  • Mixing: blue + orange or gray + orange. You can vary the intensity of the hue by adding less or more gray.
  • Optional: green + purple + orange. This shade has a pleasant red or red tint. You can also mix yellow + purple - the color will have a yellowish tint.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get purple?

The easiest way to get purple is to mix equal proportions of red and blue. True, the shade will turn out a bit dirty, and it will need to be adjusted.

To make the tone cooler, take 2 parts blue and 1 part red and vice versa.

To achieve lavender and lilac, the resulting dirty purple needs to be diluted with white. The more white, the lighter and softer the shade will be.

Dark purple can be obtained by gradually adding black or green to the original color.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get red?

Red is considered a base color and is present in any artistic palette. However, you can get red by mixing violet (magenta) and yellow in a 1:1 ratio. You can also mix a carmine shade with yellow to create a more intense red. You can make it lighter by adding more yellow and vice versa. Shades of red can be obtained by adding orange, pink, yellow, and white to the base red.

What colors of paint should be mixed to get beige?

Beige is a neutral and independent color; it has many shades, which can be achieved by varying the amount of white and yellow shades added.

Most easy way get beige - mix brown and white.

To make the color more contrasting, you can add a little yellow.

Flesh beige can be obtained by mixing scarlet, blue, yellow and white. The ivory shade is created by mixing golden ocher and white paint.

Green color can be achieved by mixing equal parts yellow and blue. The result will be a grassy green hue. If you add white color to it, the mixture will lighten. By mixing brown or black pigment, you can achieve emerald, marsh, olive, dark green shades.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get gray?

Classic tandem for receiving gray- this is black + white. The more white, the lighter the finished shade.

  • You can also mix red, green and white. The color will have a slight yellow tint.
  • A blue-gray shade can be created by mixing orange with blue and white.
  • If you mix yellow with purple and white, you get a gray-beige shade.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get black?

Black is a basic monochrome color. It can be obtained by mixing magenta with yellow and cyan. Also, artists often mix green and red, but the resulting shade will not be jet black. Rich black color is produced by a mixture of orange and blue and yellow and violet. To get the shade of the night sky, you can add a little blue to the finished color, and a drop of white to lighten it.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get blue?

Blue is the main color in the palette and it is quite difficult to obtain it by mixing. It is believed that it can be obtained by adding a little yellow to green, but in practice the result is more of a blue-green tint. You can mix purple with blue, the shade will be deep but dark. You can lighten it by adding a drop of white.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get yellow?

Base yellow cannot be obtained by mixing other shades. Something similar happens if you add green to orange. Variations of yellow are obtained by adding other tones to the basic one. For example, lemon is a mixture of yellow, green and white. Sunny yellow is a mixture of basic yellow, a drop of white and red.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get pink?

The easiest option is to mix red and white. The more white, the lighter the shade. It is important to know that the tone depends on which red you choose:

  • Scarlet + white will give a pure pink color.
  • Brick red + white - peach pink.
  • Blood red + violet give a fuchsia shade.
  • Orange-pink can be obtained by adding yellow paint to scarlet and white.

What colors of paint need to be mixed to get orange?

Orange color can be obtained by mixing red and yellow.

  • A less saturated shade will be obtained if pink pigment is added to yellow paint.
  • Terracotta orange is the result of mixing base orange with blue or purple.
  • Dark shades are achieved by mixing red, yellow and black.
  • If you add brown instead of black, you get red orange.

We vary the intensity of the tone by adding more white or black.

In this article we will tell you what colors to mix to get brown. This information will be of interest primarily to novice artists, because painting professionals are well aware of all the secrets of paints. Great, if you now have gouache, watercolor or tempera on hand, you can immediately start following the recommendations from our article. Experiencedly you will see how easy it is to get various shades brown color.

The easiest way

Warm brown is a mixture of black and red. You can make it by simply mixing cinnabar and black paint. Only the proportions of these two ingredients should not be equal: red should predominate somewhat in such a mixture. Ideal option: first squeeze cinnabar or red cadmium onto the palette from a tube and then begin to slowly mix

If you prefer to paint with watercolors, you can use another interesting technique receiving required colors and shades. First, red is applied in light strokes to the paper, and after it dries, transparent and watery black is applied on top. The effect is as if two transparent pieces of glass were superimposed on each other.

What happens if you mix blue and orange?

How do you think? Yes, yes, we will get exactly the color we need, i.e. brown! We hope you won’t have any difficulties getting it. Just in case, let’s say that you can get it by mixing red (there should be more of this color) and yellow paints. Did it work? Great! Now add a little blue and stir, then add a little more blue. The result should be a beautiful chocolate brown paint.

If the shade doesn’t suit you and you want something brighter, then mix in more orange to get a light brown color. Blue can be in the form of ultramarine or cobalt.

Experimenting with green and red

First we get green by mixing blue and yellow. Remember: if there is too much of the latter, then the greens will turn out to be too bright, and if you overdo it with blue, then, on the contrary, it will be too dark. It is best to achieve a golden mean. You need to mix red with the resulting green. You already know that shades of brown can be very diverse, and this depends on which particular paint predominates in the composite color.

If, as a result of the manipulations performed on the palette, the result is a warm red-brown, and this absolutely suits you, then the experiment can be considered complete. But if you want something different, try adding more green (chrome or emerald green). Perhaps you will be able to invent a recipe for your signature brown paint.

Purple and yellow

Let's continue to look for the answer to the question of what colors to mix to get brown. In our searches and experiments, we move on to mixing yellow and purple. First, let's get a dark royal violet and combine blue and red in equal proportions. Isn't it true? purple very handsome? And now all that’s left is to mix yellow paint into this beauty.

If there is a lot of it, it will turn out, but if there is more purple, then the end result will be darker and deeper. Much depends on what kind of yellow paint you use: a bright cadmium or perhaps a subdued yellow light ocher.

Mix all the primary colors

Haven't found the right shade yet? Then we continue our creative research. We take 4 black, and, of course, red. The process of creating brown begins by combining equal amounts of green and blue. Next, add black to them, then red and at the very end yellow (the more of it, the lighter brown the color you get).

Learning to use ocher

Once upon a time, artists made their own paints and used only natural pigments. The most accessible and widespread paint was ocher (golden, yellow, red), which was extracted from ordinary clay. Look at ancient Russian icons - they are dominated by a restrained color - brown-golden. You, too, can learn how to get these shades of brown if you use ocher instead of yellow paint when mixing.

The main thing is proportions

Take ready set watercolors and gouaches, you will definitely find brown paint in it, sometimes even more than one. Why do artists prefer to mix different colors, and not use ready-made ones? The answer is very simple: nature rarely uses pure colors; it paints in thousands, millions of shades. Well, artists can only follow her example and, before starting to create, find out what colors to mix to get brown, gray, purple, etc.

By changing the proportions of mixed colors, you can achieve amazing results. Try it! Sometimes it is enough to change the shade of paint by adding just one extra drop of something on the palette - this is a very interesting creative process.

Avoid dirty shades

Beginning artists often sin in that, in pursuit of originality, when obtaining one shade or another, they begin to combine too many colors with each other at the same time and, instead of creating a beautiful color, they spread ordinary dirt on the palette, which in no way can decorate the picture. Try to avoid muddy shades, follow the tips in this article, they clearly indicate which colors to mix to get brown.

In conclusion

In the end, I would like to wish all aspiring painters not only creative success, but also courage in comprehending new things. Create, try, dare, mix different colors, look for your unique ones color combinations! This is exactly what all great artists did. They were not afraid of anything and always went their own way, not paying attention to criticism. Who knows, maybe success and deafening glory await you ahead!

This shade is not too bright, but popular. It is actively used to decorate the interior of a room, when painting furniture, makeup, when painting canvases, and also to change hair color. Based on this, the question of what needs to be mixed with what to get the desired result is very relevant.

What colors make brown?

Proper mixing is a whole science, but today the task is made easier by a ready-made color wheel, which can be seen on the Internet. It gives an understanding that the main colors are yellow, red and blue. The circle represents the result when each of these options is mixed with each other - secondary colors. If you combine them, you get tertiary ones. There are three main laws when mixing:

  • Law No. 1. Each color of the circle is a symbiosis of those opposite to the center, which, when mixed, give an additional color, that is, achromatic. Complementaries are clearly defined, for example, red has green, and yellow has blue.
  • Law No. 2. Used in practice, it indicates that when mixing paints that are close to each other on the color wheel, new colors of the main color are formed - the one that is located between the mixed pigments. So, to get orange, you should combine red with yellow, and green - mix yellow with blue. By combining the three main components in the form of red, yellow and blue in ambiguous proportions, you can achieve any effect.
  • Law No. 3. When mixing the same shades, similar mixtures are obtained. This result is achieved by combining colors that are identical in tone, but different in saturation. Another option: mix several colors through a symbiosis of chromatic and achromatic.

What colors should be mixed to get brown?

Artists working with gouache know that when combined different colors new colors are born. Even a special synthesis table has been created that helps make the necessary shades. The most basic way to get brown is to add red to green. These tones are present in any hardware store or in the office department. However, you cannot mix dark red and dark green, because you will get a dirty shade that will vaguely resemble black.

Don't know how to get a brown color when mixing paints if there is no green in the palette? In this case, you can use three colors: red, blue, yellow. This is due to the fact that green is obtained through the synthesis of blue and yellow. For another mixing option will be used gray paint plus orange, or purple and yellow. Thus, the missing pigments that make up the basic formula can always be replaced.

How to get dark brown color

It’s easy to get the desired result: add a little black pigment to red, orange or yellow. Brown can easily be given different shades: you need to take yellow, blue and red as a base, and then add other colors. For example, red helps create a warm tone with a hint of rust, while blue helps ensure the final result has depth and punch. Saturation can be achieved by combining different proportions yellow, blue and red according to the scheme:

  • You can get mustard if you combine red, yellow and black with a drop of green.
  • Dark brown will be achieved by mixing red, yellow, white and black.
  • Red-brown (known as marsala, similar to dark pink) should be obtained by mixing two shades: chocolate and red in large quantities.

How to get orange color and its shades in 10 photos + table of all possible derivatives. How to get coral, peach, terracotta and red colors? The influence of white, black and brown in color composition.
Orange color is obtained by mixing red and yellow, but you can get a shade of this color (soft and quite light) by adding pink to yellow paint. Subsequently, all the main saturated shades of orange are in one way or another connected with red, yellow, pink, and white. More complex and darker tones are obtained using purple, brown and black.

How to get orange color by mixing paints: red and yellow of the desired tone?

Everyone knows that the main gradient of orange lies within red-orange and yellow-orange. Since the color is obtained from two colors, depending on the percentage of each color there is a shift in one direction or another.
Of course, all the resulting shades from the primary colors (in our case, red and yellow) will be paler. However, orange consists of 2 warm tones, the waves of which are not very different (the opposite would be blue and yellow to create green), and even in the second order it looks quite catchy.

Mixing acrylic paints for drawing:

How to get yellow-orange and red-orange?

It is believed that to get classic orange, you need to take 1 part yellow and 1 part red. However, in practice it turns out that you have to take more yellow than red. In the palette you can always choose the desired tone by adding yellow or red to the mixture.

How to get light orange color?

This tone comes in a wide range of pastel shades. They are built using white, but there is an alternative option: mix pink and yellow, the resulting shade is a soft orange tone, belonging to the light range:

Another option would be to add yellow and white.
Usually in a palette of 12 colors there is already an orange tint, which is much brighter than the color obtained by mixing, so when constructing shades we will use what is already available.
In my palette of glossy acrylic paints there is a bright red-orange tone. To get light orange tones from it, I will need to mix red-orange, yellow and white:

How to get coral color?

Although this shade is closer to pink, its construction is completely tied to orange color, and there are 2 scenarios for getting it:
1) Complex: take red-orange, pink and white in approximately equal parts (when you mix, adjust the shade by eye, the main thing is to mix the paint thoroughly).

2) Red-orange is close to scarlet, and scarlet is a shade of red. Red, when mixed with white, produces pink, and coral can be called a light shade of pink with an orange undertone.

In this case, coral will lean closer to orange, but still remain a luxurious tropical shade.

How to get peach color?

Another light and subtle shade of the main color. Peach belongs to the soft pastel palette, standing out from it with its sophistication, it has long been loved and entrenched in our imagination. Its construction consists of 4 colors:
1) Red + yellow + pink + white
2) Orange + yellow + pink + white
3) Coral + yellow + white

How to get terracotta color?

Let's move on to dark shades of orange. One of interesting options– this is terracotta: a medium-dark, but rich complex red-orange shade is obtained by mixing violet and red-orange:

Adding a drop of white will help make the shade lighter.

How to get red color?

Red color has an orange undertone. If you take brown and mix it with red-orange, the resulting shades will be dark but rich. You can adjust the tone by adding yellow.

How to get dark orange color?

You can adjust the brightness of shades of orange using black: either to complete darkness or simply dim the brightness. This is necessary to create contrast.
If you want to dim light shades: mix white with black to a gray mass and add it to the working tone.

Table for obtaining orange shades when mixing colors:

Practice in color science is irreplaceable, but theory can give you an understanding of how this or that tone is built.

In the center is the main color from which the color is built. The first circle of colors is the shades with which the color is mixed in the proportion indicated below. The third circle is formed by tones that were obtained by mixing the main color and the first circle in a smaller proportion than the third. On each side of the color at the end of the beam, the same color with the addition of black (darker) and white (lighter).
