What is hair thinning, why is it needed and how to do it correctly?

Thinning hair by cutting or shaving individual strands at different heights is commonly called thinning. This technique can be used both to reduce the density of hair, and to add volume to thin and sparse curls. There are how many special tools and techniques to perform.

Who suits

Many people think that thinning causes significant damage to the hair. However, this is not the case provided that it is performed by a qualified master.

In order to understand which hair is suitable for thinning, it is necessary to evaluate its thickness and obedience. As a rule, hair is:

  • thick and thick, having a healthy and well-groomed appearance;
  • thin, but healthy and shiny;
  • thin and rare, without shine, most often clarified;
  • weakened and thinned after dyeing or perm.

Thinning can be subjected to hair belonging to the first and second groups, while coarse and thick hair can be thinned with both scissors and a razor, and those belonging to the second group can be thinned exclusively with thinning scissors. It is not recommended to mill the hair of the third and fourth groups, otherwise they will become even rarer.

Types of thinning

There are several types of thinning, which are used by modern masters.

Tools

For milling, they usually use:

  • one and two-sided thinning scissors with special serrated blades;
  • scissors are simple and sharpened with a sliding cut;
  • simple and thinning razors;
  • clippers with special attachments.

Techniques

There are several hair milling techniques that provide good texture.

Pointcut

First, the master places thinning scissors closer to the end of the selected strand and makes a cut. After that, the scissors move along the strand about 2 centimeters down. The blades close and part of the strand is cut off. Thanks to this, the ends of the hair are greatly facilitated.

Pointing

The haircut is carried out with the sharp tips of simple scissors, which are set at an angle of 90 degrees to the selected strand and make successive cuts in the form of a fringe.

Slicing

Using scissors with ordinary blades, it is necessary to pull the strand at a right angle to the surface of the head. Bring the blades of the open scissors to the middle of the strand, and without closing, quickly direct them to the ends of the hair.

The difficulty of using this method lies in the fact that during the procedure there is a possibility of cutting off the whole strand. That is why only an experienced master should perform it.

Picketage

This technique is usually performed on short hair using a comb and regular scissors. The hair is combed against its growth and all protruding strands are milled with the tips of scissors at an angle of 45 degrees, forming peculiar teeth.

tourniquet

This original technique will easily add volume to the hairstyle. It is so simple that you can easily do it yourself at home.

First you need to select a small strand and twist it with a tourniquet. Using ordinary scissors or a machine with a special nozzle, you need to carefully make short cuts along the entire length of the tourniquet.

With a razor

Using a special razor for filleting, it is brought close to the hair, in parallel. At the same time, the strand is raised perpendicular to the head, and the razor is pulled from the roots or from the middle of the hair to the tips. To achieve the desired effect, the procedure with one strand is performed several times.

As a rule, thinning is carried out on wet hair with strong tension on the strands to avoid accidental complete cutting. The tip goes to the ends of the hair. At the moment when the blade reaches the planned cutting line, the angle of inclination increases.
