The Vagankovskoye cemetery is one of the largest and most famous necropolises in Moscow. This memorial complex covers an area of ​​50 hectares of land. Its location is the northwestern part of the capital.

The Vagankovo ​​cemetery was founded in 1771 by order of Count Grigory Orlov. Catherine II personally sent him to Moscow to prevent the consequences of the plague.

The formation of a new burial place was a necessary measure due to the many deaths from a terrible disease. Land in the old cemeteries was sorely lacking.

Over the next years (until the middle of the 19th century) this place was the last refuge of peasants, petty officials, ordinary residents of Moscow.

The Vagankovskoye cemetery in Moscow gained its popularity after the burial of the dead soldiers of the Russian army in 1812 in the battle of Borodino. Novodevichy Cemetery is considered the main Moscow necropolis. In Soviet times, it became the second most important burial place after the Kremlin wall. The cemetery is located in the southwestern part of the city, in Khamovniki, on the territory adjacent to the Novodevichy Convent (Sportivnaya metro station).

The first burials appeared in the 17th century on the territory of the Novodevichy Convent. Vagankovskoye cemetery is a monument of Russian cultural heritage. The official year of foundation - 1771 - the time of the plague that accompanied the Russian-Turkish war.
