Can everyone learn to sing?

I have been teaching vocals for 15 years. I started my teaching career at an art school and worked with children from 7 to 17 years old, but soon I realized that it was much more interesting for me to work with adults and for the last 7 years I have been teaching adults to sing, my oldest student was 65 years old.

Good day! My name is Irina laprimairene and today I will reveal to you the secrets of vocal pedagogy and tell you how you can learn to sing.

Among my students there are professional vocalists, but the majority are amateurs - people who, in adulthood, decided to develop their voice and learn how to sing. I organized a vocal studio where anyone could come, regardless of the level of training, learn to sing and try themselves as a real artist by performing in concerts that we regularly held. Gradually, my students developed and it became interesting for us to try something new, so our musical theater "AmaDeus" was born, which I now head. There is also a vocal studio at the theater where my teachers and I teach everyone the wonderful art of voice control.

I am often asked the question: "Can everyone learn to sing?" I can safely say - everyone can learn! BUT - everyone's level will be different, as it depends on the natural data of each and on the approach to the learning process and on the desired result.

Everyone can develop their voice to sing their favorite songs in the company of friends. If you want more, then your natural musical and vocal skills will be important here, as well as your diligence, because vocal training is a complex, painstaking and long-term process. Therefore, if you really want to learn how to control your voice, do not be seduced by the promises of vocal studios and teachers to teach you to sing in 2 weeks, this is impossible! Singing is a complex, multi-tasking coordination-muscular process in which almost the entire body is involved. And it is impossible to master these skills in such a short time. You can read about how the process of teaching vocals looks like through the eyes of my student.

If you want to learn how to sing, you need to find a studio or a vocal teacher who can teach you how to master your voice as an instrument, master the technique of vocal breathing, singing on a support, correct articulation, develop the power and flight of sound, put the correct singing position, etc. Having learned how to use your voice apparatus, you will be able to develop in any vocal genre, whether it is pop, jazz or academic vocals.

How long the learning process will take you will also depend on several factors. Here, the initial level with which you come to the teacher and your predisposition to learning vocals are important, for some the process goes very quickly, while others will learn at a slower pace.

The fact of the frequency of classes and your attitude to them is also important. It is worth doing at least twice a week, lessons should be regular, without long breaks, classes from time to time will not give anything. Your attitude to the learning process is also very important - the exact fulfillment of the requirements of the teacher, your independent home practice and the desire to learn and develop are the keys to your success.

Another important point is the choice of a teacher. First of all, you should establish a good personal contact with the teacher - this person should impress you. His explanations should be clear to you - vocal teachers often sin with very figurative and abstract explanations of vocal technique, if you cannot fulfill the requirements of the teacher because you do not understand what he wants from you, you should think about changing the teacher. You also need to change the teacher if after class you feel discomfort (your voice is hoarse, hoarse, sits down), there is no progress in the development of your voice, it is difficult for you to sing (you get tired, you feel discomfort in your throat, your voice breaks).

You can talk about vocal technique and vocal training endlessly, I tried to touch on the most important topics for those who want to learn how to sing. Singing is a fascinating, beautiful and useful process - it develops attention and memory, improves and heals the respiratory system, harmonizes your emotional state, makes you more open, teaches you to express your emotions. Do not be afraid to start learning to sing, it is available at any age!
