Pavel Volya — popular artist, showman, TV presenter, project participant "Comedy Club", and by and large a dashing joker, with a good dose of irony, smart and “glamorous” humor, whom the audience is always looking forward to meeting. On the eve of his performance in America, he gave exclusive interview for Afisha magazine .

Pavel, very soon you will perform in America, and this is not the first time. Tell me, are you preparing a special program for the American public? Will it be any different from the one you compete with in Russia?

Yes, we have prepared a big tour of America. This is my Big Stand Up. Of course, I would like to show all the numbers that I have accumulated over a long period of time, but then I will have to extend the concert over three days. Each of my concerts is special. And it always turns out that I have something new for every city. I always come up with numbers on the road, in a hotel, and try to share my thoughts on the most relevant topics.

Pavel, you are well known as a brilliant showman, a resident of the Comedy Club, but few people know that by profession you are a teacher of the Russian language. Why didn't you go to work at school?

Yes, I really am a teacher of Russian language and literature by profession. It so happened that at university I started playing KVN, and it’s very addictive. And in the end I ended up with a novel with humor, and not with a school magazine.

How do you think your performances can educate young people? Or is it better for children under 16 not to come to concerts?

The posters for my performances are marked 18+. This means that before this age you should not go to my concerts. In general, it is better to educate young people not on the performances of comedians, but on literature, for example. Now a 16-year-old young man will read good books, become an interesting and educated person, and just after 18 will come to my concert. And together we will laugh at adult problems.

You are very brave on stage, sometimes making harsh jokes at the guests. You are probably often asked this question, but nevertheless, no one has ever been offended by you? Have you ever had to apologize for your jokes?

There are different types of mistakes. If I know that for one reason or another I did it and was wrong, then, of course, I will always apologize. Everything I say from the stage is not to offend. This is all my creativity, my humor. And every viewer perceives me as I am. This is why I love my audience.

Are politicians in Russia a taboo topic today or not? Can you joke openly and boldly about this topic today?

I have always been outside of politics, and I never had the desire to joke about these topics. I don't like talking about politics. Everything is too complicated there. It's better to talk about something more pleasant.

Do you think a sense of humor is a sign of intelligence?

I think yes. If a person can joke about himself, the world around him and perceive such jokes adequately, then he is definitely not deprived of intelligence. Humor, of course, comes in different forms.

Pavel, yesterday you were considered a “glamorous scumbag,” but today you are an exemplary family man. You have a wonderful wife Laysan Utyasheva, a famous athlete, and two wonderful children. How has your life changed since you had a family in your life?

It has changed very dramatically. I adore my family, I madly love my wife, my children. And this is some kind of incredible love. They are my everything.

Your wife, Laysan Utyasheva, said in one of her interviews that you were friends with her for a long time before you developed a close relationship. What is friendship between a man and a woman for you? Does it exist? What does male friendship mean to you? Which Comedy Club resident are you close friends with??

Friendship exists even between a tiger and a goat! And even more so between a man and a woman. What is friendship for me? Just like any normal person. Friends are people who do everything to make your life more interesting and richer. Support, help, advice, fooling around - all this is about friends. At the Comedy Club, everyone is a family person. Mostly we all meet at festivals, where we come as families with children. I can’t single out just one person as a friend.

What do you think is the meaning of life? What are your thoughts today?

My thoughts today and always are about my family and my children. I believe that this is the main meaning of life. Give birth to children, raise them with dignity.

What would you wish to the American audience who will come to your performance?

Relax and just laugh heartily with me.

It seems that if you put the first person of any state in front of him, Pavel Volya, without blinking an eye, will tell him about a “deeply disorganized child with hairy legs” or ask his interlocutor if he has panties with an elephant on them. He managed to infuriate even Alla Pugacheva when he represented Philip Kirkorov from the stage at the New Wave competition in Jurmala. The prima donna of Russian show business, unable to restrain herself, called the presumptuous resident of the Comedy Club a scathing word. It is unknown how this all could have ended if Volya had not shown prudence in time and bitten his sharp tongue.

Among his fans, he is known by the quite cute nickname “Snowball”. No one really knows where it came from and what it is connected with. At the Comedy Club, the tradition of assigning strange pseudonyms to participants turned out to be extremely stable: Garik Kharlamov became “Bulldog” there, Vadim Galygin - “Rimbaud”, Timur Batrutdinov - “Kashtan”, Dmitry Sorokin - “Lyuskom”, Sergey Stakhov - “Losem” , Alexander Revva is simply “A”, and Timur Kerimov turned into Timur Rodriguez.

Failed teacher

In the conversational genre, Pavel Volya from the very beginning mastered the role of a “glamorous scumbag.” He bases his speeches on “lowering” his interlocutors or those present in the hall. Criticism of political, social and other pressing social problems is not his path. He is proud that he does not sow “decadent” moods and believes that this is his advantage compared to sold-out comedians.

His story will successfully add to the anthology of biographies of Russian stars with provincial roots. On the Internet, on sites dedicated to Volya, you can find out that he was born and raised in Penza. Once upon a time, Pavel seriously considered the work of a school teacher to be his calling and, after receiving a certificate along with a silver medal, he entered a pedagogical university. With a diploma as a teacher of Russian language and literature, he went to Moscow, but did not go into teaching, but went to television. At first he wrote scripts for Igor Ugolnikov, then he worked as a presenter on Muz-TV, voiced the legendary Masyanya and participated in the KVN team “Valeon Dasson”.

Since 2005, Pavel Volya joined the creative team of the popular project on the TNT TV channel “Comedy Club” and became its permanent resident. And two years later he decided that he was ready for a solo career. He recorded several songs of his own composition, shot video clips for them and released a solo album, “Respect and Respect.” Snowball did not refuse the chance to act in a movie: he played Tim Milan in “The Best Movie,” Plato in the comedy of the same name by Vartan Akopyan and Stas in “The Bride at Any Cost” by Dmitry Grachev.

Snezhka is “ordered” mainly by all sorts of Rublev’s oligarchs: well, they are really impressed by the cheeky showman with a hooligan style of communication.

Inquisitive journalists more than once or twice besieged the leaders of the Comedy Club project with questions on the topic “How much do residents earn?” In response, they were once advised to simply evaluate the cars in which the mentioned residents drive around. Pavel Volya has a soft spot for Mercedes. Having started to receive his first decent money, he bought himself a W124, but quickly became disillusioned with it after he had several accidents. He dreams of purchasing a six hundredth Mercedes in dazzling white color - it will successfully harmonize with his nickname.
