INTRODUCTION

I'm about to turn 36, which means I was a teenager in the 80s. The times were very strange then, especially regarding music. I listened (sometimes I still listen to) heavy metal. Metalheads were associated with a certain art style, full of chrome, lighting and blondes in leather (now you see where my love for reflective surfaces comes from). I tried to apply this style to my metalhead Bumby.

INSPIRATION

Below is a list of artists who inspired me:- Doro Pesch and her band Warlock: She is the main inspiration for this drawing. She was (and still is) a Queen heavy metal . On the Internet you will find a lot of photographs showing her image in the 80s. If you look at Bumby's hair in the final image, you'll notice that it's exact copy

Doro's hairstyles.- Jason Edminston (http://jasonedmiston.deviantart.com/): My friend Jason is an amazingly talented illustrator. He created great amount

illustrations that influenced my metalheads.- Didier Crissie

(http://didier-crisse.blogspot.com/): famous French illustrator who created a huge number of comics. It has influenced my style and the colors I usually use.- Hajime Sorayama: always my favorite source of inspiration. Great master

chrome and leather.

SKETCH

As usual, I don't spend much time creating a sketch (Fig. 01). The composition is very simple and the pose is classic. Just what I need!

COLORS AND LIGHTING

This is the most important part of the drawing. The colors are quite simple because my palette is logical. This time I will use a different technique. I usually create many layers and try to separate all the different parts of the design, but sometimes it's easier to work on one single layer and carefully select the shades. This is similar to creating a color sketch and is very useful (Figure 02).

I then cut and paste the girl into a new file and clean up all the lines using a soft round brush with a low Opacity (Fig. 03). Don't forget that you need to work in a large format. I then create a simple background using gradients (Figure 04).

From my original color sketch I recreate the entire color palette. So I don't have to do extra work with a lot of low opacity brushes. I create the entire painting with a standard brush with an opacity somewhere between 50% and 100%. Sometimes I clean up gradients with a soft round brush, but in in this case the image is more hand-drawn and does not require frequent use of soft brushes.

HEAD

Bambi's face is quite simple. She looks like a regular cartoon, but the retro lighting creates an interesting picture. I will change her facial expression as I work (Fig. 05). I copy the skin tones that I have already created in my sketch and use them so that there is enough contrast on the skin. In some places I add blue-turquoise highlights in a retro style. For the first time, brush strokes can be seen here. This completes the work on skin tones.

Click on the picture to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

With hair, everything is also simple. I add a little orange between the darkest and brightest strands to demonstrate the transparency of the hair that is sure to be present in this light (Figure 06).

LEATHER AND METAL ELEMENTS

I'm starting with the darkest area, which is the dark brown color here. I gradually introduce brighter colors on a new layer. Then I add retro lighting to blue color(Fig. 07). Leather is less reflective than vinyl, so the contrast should be fairly soft. The metal parts are painted using just a couple of colors. I create a lot of sparkling stars on the metal, Sorayama style, to create a kitschy effect (Fig. 08).

GUITAR

I tried to find the most emblematic guitar of the 80's heavy metal era, and settled on a Flying V model guitar. At first I thought that a red guitar would fit in well, but then I decided to make it chrome, because... it will be more interesting to create it (Fig. 09).

Chrome is a special metal. It looks like a mirror and reflects the entire environment. Remember that any object has its own shape and volume. The most difficult thing is to find a suitable gradient. In reality, the guitar will not reflect the floor, but rather will only reflect the sky, which is a brownish-red color. I decided to cheat a little, as usual. I create all the pieces on separate layers and only merge them when I'm happy with the result.

LOGO

I'm not a designer, so I'm not very familiar with logos and fonts. You could probably find many better solutions than I did, but I wanted to put my own stamp on it, so the font is used here only as a basis. This font can be easily found on the Internet; it is inspired by the Iron Man logo ( Iron Maiden). The logo will reflect both the sky and the earth too (Fig. 10).

Original photographs of girls from whom pin-ups were drawn from the 30s to the 50s.

The name Pin-Up itself came from truck drivers who covered their trucks with pages of beautiful girls. Literally “pin up” - to pin. Pin-Up appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century, when they began to use drawn beauties for advertising and calendars, who at first were simply redrawn from photographs or even simply colored in the pictures.

Gil Elvgren is considered one of the most significant pin-up artists of the 20th century. Elvgren's heroines were “neighbor girls” who were caught by surprise during various piquant situations. Gil Elvgren redrew models and subjects for his illustrations from photographs.

Pin-Up appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century, when they began to use drawn beauties for advertising and calendars, who at first were simply redrawn from photographs or even simply colored in the pictures. The founder of pin-up is considered to be Coca company Cola, which was the first to simply redraw candid photographs of women of that time as advertising magazine illustrations.

The name Pin-Up itself came from truck drivers who covered their trucks with pages of beautiful girls. Literally “pin up” - to pin. In Russian it is often used to refer to a specific style of American graphics from the mid-20th century.

The heyday of Pin-Up came in the 30s, when girls won magazine covers. Moreover, the girls often had nothing in common with the contents of the magazine. But collectors and hobbyists were ready to buy such magazines just because of the covers.

Second World War only spurred the flourishing of this genre, because hungry soldiers needed something to dream about and something to watch. Especially among American soldiers during World War II, posters of Betty Grable were distributed. She was one of the most famous pin-up models early era. Her famous photo in a swimsuit was included by Life magazine in its list of “100 Photos That Changed the World.”

*********************
Bettie Page is considered the most famous pin-up model. The American fashion model was a real sex symbol in the United States in the second half of the 50s and one of the founders of the sexual revolution movement that swept America in the early 1960s.

*********************
Initially, the unspoken laws of the Pin-Up genre required that the “main thing” be demonstrated only in hints, and not directly. Eroticism manifested itself as if by accident: an elastic band in panties burst, a skirt accidentally lifted up (with the help of the wind or a dog).

Gil Elvgren is considered one of the most significant pin-up artists of the 20th century. Elvgren's heroines were not femme fatales, and “neighbor girls” who were caught off guard during various piquant situations. Elvgren enjoyed commercial success; he created a huge number of illustrations for companies such as Coca-Cola and General Electric, and illustrated many magazines (The Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping and others).

Nude female breast The most courageous artists decided to depict it only in the 50s. The images have already begun to contain more sexual undertones. And the more frank fashion and traditions became, the more frank the pictures appeared. Famous charts 50s pin-up style was brought into illustrations with beautiful women there is already much more revelation.
George Petty is an artist who became famous for his illustrations of half-naked playful girls, drawn especially for the legendary Esquire magazine in 1934. Later, these beauties became known as “Petty Girls”, and their images became extremely popular. During World War II, American pilots decorated the fuselages of their fighter planes with “Petty Girls.”

Bill Rendell is one of the most talented and original American artists twentieth century, who created in the pin-up style. His playful, eye-catching illustrations were widely in demand by glossy publications, calendar and book manufacturers. He has collaborated with Esquire, Palmolive, General Motors and others.

Edward Runci is an outstanding but not certified artist who worked in oil on canvas. The girls Ranki painted in the 50s were always very similar to Marilyn Monroe. They were created based on its prototype. Critics argued that many of Ranki's works were actually the work of his wife, who signed the paintings with their common surname "Ranki".

Earl Morin painted pastels. Unlike Elvgreen and other artists, Morin never used the same subject in his works. His work has always been more varied than the work of many famous and popular artists. One of his most famous models was Marilyn Monroe, who posed for him from 1946 to 1950.

Although Edward D'Encona painted hundreds of paintings, very little is known about him or his life. During the 40s-50s, excellent use simple flowers, free, floating strokes and a unique pin-up style of painting, allowed Edward to rise to unprecedented heights. He was recognized as one of best artists in the pin-up style of that time.

Hundreds of artists have worked in the pin-up genre over the past century. Pin-up images are still used in advertising today. Because pin-up is much more than simple erotic drawings. This is just a kind of hint of eroticism, a hint that a woman is not so much beautiful body so much tenderness and mystery.

What is a “pin-up”? Translated from in English“Pin-up” means “to make fun of.” This concept was first used back in 1941, and later pin-up became an iconic phenomenon in the culture of the mid-twentieth century. As a rule, the concept of pin-up refers to an image beautiful girl, quite often half-naked, but this image is performed in a unique, special style. Quite often, drawings were created from photographs in the same style. Moreover, the drawings were created so bright and colorful that sometimes it was very difficult to distinguish them from photographs.
As a rule, pin-up girls became famous personalities, such as actresses, but very often used images of fashion models and models when creating such images. Especially during World War II, pin-up images became very popular. They became popular with military personnel flying around the world, who had collections or single copies of photographs or cards with girls depicted in this style.
If you look at pin-up culture as a whole, this style can be divided into two temporary stages. The earlier pin-up can be dated back to the 40-50s, and the later one can be dated back to our time. Most main feature A pin-up is considered an idealization of the image of a girl, noticeable by the impeccable execution of images with them. Basically, the plot of pin-up images is the same. This is, as a rule, some kind of piquant situation in which the girl can be caught off guard, just at the moment when she shows off elements of her underwear. As for the later pin-up, a slightly different direction prevails here - here it turns Special attention on tattoos, posing near cars, the plot is focused and presented in rockabilly style, there is trash defined by each artist in the required proportion.

Today we bring to your attention the first part of photographs and images in the pin-up style.

When confronted, many call them outrageous and shocking. The artist himself calls his sketches satirical and refers them to everyday genre with a cartoonish twist.

Vladimir Kazak is a contemporary Russian artist who was born in Tver in 1973. In 1995 he graduated from Tver art school by profession a graphic designer.

The primary goal of art is to amaze, and my work is a kind of protection from the surrounding predatory world.

I graduated from art school in the city of Tver. Since 1993 he worked as an illustrator of children's books. A year after graduating from college, I mastered the computer, primarily the layout programs - Quark XPress and Aldus Page Maker. I drew in fits and starts, mostly in educational literature, which I actually typed up. Then he changed several studios and publishing houses, where he worked as a designer and art director.

Now I also do freelance design, mostly packaging and a little illustration. There is a pool of clients, mostly local businesses, that I have been managing for many years... I work with magazines and advertising agencies, of course, I have a dream to draw my own book.

I love drawing women and airplanes. No not like this. First the planes, then the women.

The main advantage of speedpaint is the freshness of perception. It often happens that excessive elaboration of details ruins the impression of the work. A person can sit for several days or weeks, drawing eyelashes, highlights and folds, correcting the anatomy, but the finished work will smell only of his sweat. And in speedpaint he simply won’t have time to ruin it! Yes, in a quick drawing, especially if the author is not Craig Mullins, the flaws are more visible, but they are outweighed by the opportunity to see it in the nude, the main thing is what impressed the author and made him take up a pencil or tablet.

In fact, I recently started drawing on a tablet. Drawing in the classical way is different, but with a tablet I think I’m still not on the same page. On the one hand, its possibilities seem limitless, on the other, in two active years of working on it (and three more previous periodic ones:) I was not able to develop sufficient hardness of the line, which I can draw with a pencil or sauce on paper.

The fact is that I did not have a course in classical composition; everything that I managed to learn on my own did not replace systematic education. With the advent of computers, the skills that I acquired at school could easily be thrown into trash. Well, who now needs to write with a poster pen or roll out a gradient on a tablet using a roller?

As for drawings, apparently I just really like to draw and sometimes it works out. On average, the drawing takes an hour and a half. Sometimes it’s faster, but sometimes the picture sucks you in and there’s no way to stop in time.

In my direct work, I am inspired by the desire to make a bottle/box/jar beautiful. Once in another city, on the window of a residential building, I saw a bouquet in an empty bottle of my design. This is better than any Avard...

If we talk about drawings, I don’t even know the specific source of inspiration. Sometimes you take a plot out of your head that has been hanging around for a long time and adapt it; you are often inspired by the work of a colleague - how he looked at an object that is common to you.

Bicycle rides with my daughter through industrial surroundings provide a lot of ideas. The Strugatskys are resting! What never inspires me is japanese cartoons and the fantasy genre. Everything there has already been chewed so well that all that remains is to swallow and forget.

It's hard to know where the hobby ends and everyday life begins. I heard somewhere that if work is done for pleasure, then it is no longer work. Of course, there are difficult orders and intractable customers from whom you want to take a break.
For this problem I have two solutions - speedpaint and bicycle.

I still can’t decide which invention is more ingenious - a bicycle or a computer. There is also a notebook, in which I usually draw pictures of my wife and daughter, as well as friends who drink wine with me on weekends. I also collect books about aviation.

21 In my opinion, a key part of being a CG artist is the ability to produce work that meets the task at hand. It doesn’t matter who directed it - the artist himself or the art director of his studio. But that's not all.

Recently, my colleagues and I were talking about art, what its task is - to teach beauty, to educate good feelings or finally awaken your conscience? And they came to the conclusion that its main goal, no matter how strange it may sound, is to amaze. Amaze the viewer. And this ability is doubly important for an artist who works in a market where the customer always needs “yesterday,” where public tastes and priorities change almost every month. Otherwise, no one will see his work; it will simply get lost among the more successful works of his colleagues.

The recipe for creating good work? First of all good cook and the right ingredients. In our country, as in cooking, it is important not to overcook the work (otherwise it will fall apart), not to overcook (maintain color balance), not to over-pepper (the client may sneeze), and not to “flavor” it too much with strawberries (the morality police may get stomach ache). In general, to make a product technologically flawless.

Another factor that cannot be described in a cookbook is inspiration. Without it, alas, masterpieces cannot be created. Unfortunately, this factor does not depend on deadlines, fees and ambition. But self-discipline can help - if not a masterpiece, then Good work a real specialist will always do it!

It seems to me that growth is faster in a team. Moreover we're talking about about a live team, not a virtual one. Especially if it has a leader to look up to. Well, team spirit again! When a person reaches a certain level, the team can become a burden to him. And here a person needs to choose what is more important for his self-realization - success, money, recognition from colleagues, or, perhaps, family and the opportunity to do what he loves alone. This is my personal point of view and I may be wrong.

For beginners, I would advise the same thing that I would wish for myself - draw more and get good orders! Well, in a little more detail, then draw constantly, carry a notebook with you - draw in the subway, on trains, in clubs, when you come home, read Gottfried Bammes (or rather, watch and study), observe what your colleagues draw and learn from them. You can make copies of their works - this is useful. well and own style he will come on his own, he just needs a little help :)

Stylish poster depicting a half-naked girl

In this tutorial I will show you how to make a cartoon pinup ( approx. translator - pinup (pinup) is a poster depicting a beautiful, sometimes even half-naked girl). We will go through all the steps of creating such a poster, from start to finish. So let's get started.

First, take a look at the final image:

Sometimes, before I start working in Photoshop, I prefer to take a piece of paper and make a regular pencil sketch so I can see general composition. But you can open it right away new document 550 by 750 pixels, take a brush, set the transparency to 50% and, using black, dream up a little what our heroine might look like. The main thing is to choose the optimally correct pose and imagine how it will all look in the end. Don't worry about the details just yet, we'll work them out later. Imagine that you are working on an illustration for a book, that's all.

Now, from the several figures that you have drawn, choose one that you want to continue working with. Open a new layer and name it "Sketch".
For each new version of the image, I open a new layer. This is very convenient, since you can always make all the necessary changes later. I called the layer on which we will now work
"Version 1". If you are completely satisfied with the sketch you have chosen, we will continue to work on the details.

Now let's take care of the proportions. Again open a new layer and name it "Version 2"
First we will work on the girl's hairstyle, and then we will work on the weapon in her hands. At first I even decided that arming her with two pistols would be very cool, but then for some reason I changed my mind. True, you can do it the way I planned at the beginning. The main thing is to draw all the details of the sketch well. Don't forget that in the end you should end up with something like an ink drawing.

Open a new layer again, name it "Version 3". On this layer I refined some of her details: her eyes, her belt, I also gave a more realistic look to the girl’s weapon and made her hair more voluminous. Now we have the final version of the sketch.

Open a new layer and name it "Stroke". To create the ink stroke effect we will use PenTool(feather). To be honest, a few years ago I was afraid to use a pen myself because I didn’t know exactly how to use it. And now this is my favorite instrument.
So take it PenTool(pen) mode Paths(circuit). Don't forget to check that you have the correct layer activated. Make a path as shown in my picture and select the stroke function. Control the stroke thickness and pressure yourself; select the brush option from the drop-down menu.

Here is the final version of what it should look like after tracing. I removed some details, but added realism to the girl’s hair and weapons. Look at what you came up with and try to achieve a result that you like.

Now it's time to color our sketch. It won't be difficult at all. First, decide what colors you want to use. Name the new layer you want to open “Base” and place it at the very bottom of the layers palette. The only layers we'll add at the bottom will be the background layers. So, in the end, the layers palette will look like this: background layers, the “Base” layer and its related fill layers and layers related to the sketch with the girl. Set to moderate grey colour background color. Using Fill, color the image like this.

Now remember one rule: when you paint, it is best to always make a soft transition from dark to light color. First, let's open another layer on top of the "Base" layer. Call it "Shadows". Look how I shaded dark color girl's face, hands and stomach. Choose a soft brush for this purpose, and, as necessary, change its transparency from 25 to 100%.

While you are sketching, you can use the Gradient and Brush tools. I also constantly changed the transparency and hardness of the brush. And at the end, how I added an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation(Hue/Saturation) to further emphasize the resulting effect:

Now let's add lighting. Open another layer and name it "Light". Place the layer above the "Shadows" layer. I used the same technique. Look at how the light areas are located in my work and do the same. Special attention pay attention to your hair, it should look natural, and not a solid black cap:

Now we will create a layer that we will call “Light Reflection”. I decided that the light should fall on the girl from somewhere in the background. And since I have already chosen the circle that I will draw around the girl is saturated pink color, which will go well with the color of her clothes, I just took a fairly stiff one brush and outlined the places that will be illuminated:

Now all that remains is to add small details and background. Go back to the layer we called "Stroke". Do a CRL + click to highlight the contents of the layer. Open a new layer and name it “Color Stroke”. Then hide the “Stroke” layer and simply draw the outline with the colors you need. After such drawing, the image will turn out to be three-dimensional and more similar to a regular drawing that artists make on paper.

We are approaching the finale. I want to get rid of the dull gray background and make it more interesting view. I also decided to draw a circle around the girl. For the circle we will use Gradient(gradient) from dark to light. Look how it looks on me.
And finally, the background itself. To start, I created a duplicate of my work (not much can happen) and then merged the base and outline layers together. Then, I selected the contents of the resulting layer and went to Select > Modify > Expand(select - modify - expand). Increase the number of pixels to 2. On a new layer, make a fill. When everything is ready, drag (Shift-click) the background into the original file: this should look like this:

Conclusion
That's all. I hope you learned something new. After all, even with only two tools, Pen and Brushes, you can create interesting images like a stylish poster. See you!
