Introduction

Imagine for a moment a fantastic situation: a time machine fell into our hands, which allows us to transfer people well known in Russian history to the present. Moreover, imagine that this time machine allows you to ask "guests" from the past a variety of questions. Let one of these "guests" be the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible. However, elementary interview questions could have put Grozny in a dead end. To the first two proposed questions - Name? Surname? Surname? - he would have answered without difficulty, but the third question would have caused him difficulty. Why? For two reasons. First, he did not know the word "surname" in his modern meaning: "hereditary family naming added to a personal name." Second, he didn't have a last name. Modern children would answer the third question about Ivan Vasilievich's surname - Grozny, but you should not confuse the surname with the nickname.

The surname, like the first name, is our history. They are given to a person only once and for all.

And a person can have hundreds of nicknames - thousands, and none of them will replace his last name and first name. A nickname will never become more precious for a person than his own name and surname. Therefore, everyone should be proud of their surname and wear it with dignity, whatever it may be.

Every day we hear and read dozens of names and surnames, but none of us, perhaps, has ever thought about “What do they mean?”. I became interested in finding out. And I decided to explore this question on the example of my first and last names and the names and surnames of my classmates.

Target my work is to trace the stages of the emergence and development of Russian names and surnames on the example of the surnames and names of classmates and my own.

Tasks: 1) Examine all available literature on this topic; 2) Conduct a survey among classmates; 3) Draw conclusions.

Hypothesis: I suppose that the name and surname of a person can tell a lot about the history of his family and ancestors.

The novelty of the work consists, firstly, in the fact that I have never spent

research on this topic, and, secondly, its results may be of interest to others. Scientists - anthroponyms (anthroponymy is a science that studies personal names, patronymics, surnames, nicknames, pseudonyms of people, etc.) emphasize that the study of the origin of names and surnames can provide useful information for both historians and researchers of the Russian language, i.e. To. some words that disappeared from modern language, could be preserved in surnames. By examining such words, we can also restore some details of the life of our ancestors. Russian anthroponymists have been studying Russian surnames relatively recently; among the works devoted to this topic, one can name the Dictionary of Russian Onomastic Terminology by N.V. Podolskaya. From it I managed to find out that the first Russian surnames are found in the ancient Russian documents of the 15th century that have come down to us, but they could have existed earlier. In the 19th century, almost every Russian already had a surname. But they received strict heredity and legal security in 1930.

Relevance research work is that many of the fifth graders surveyed would like to know about the origin of their surname, since it has now become fashionable to be interested in their ancestors, to compile a family (genealogical) tree. The surname is the family's ancestral name. Surnames and first names - kind of living history. They bring to us a lot of forgotten, unrecorded words and many forms lost by living speech.

Research objects: students of the 5th grade (11-12 years old).

Research methods: 1. Method of study, search.2. Method of observation.

3. Descriptive.4. Method of comparison and comparison. 5. Questioning.

6. Method of analysis and generalization. 7. Method of informing.

Expected result: having learned about the origin of my first and last names, as well as the names and surnames of my classmates, I will be able to replenish knowledge not only about my family, but also help to compile a more complete family tree to their classmates.

Russian surnames

The secret of the surname will tell a lot

Someone's fate will certainly show.

The meaning of surnames needs to be known for a long time.

No one can hide the secret!

The meaning and origin of the word "surname"

The history of the word "surname" itself is interesting. By origin, it is Latin and got into the Russian language as part of words borrowed from languages Western Europe. But in Russia, the word surname was initially used in the meaning of "family". And only in the 19th century the word surname in Russian gradually acquired its second meaning, which then became the main one. As you know, a surname is a hereditary family naming used together with a personal name. That is, it is passed down from generation to generation, from older family members to younger ones.

In the dictionary of S.I. Ozhegov, we find the following interpretation: “Last name - 1. Hereditary family name added to a personal name. Maiden name. 2. Same as genus. old surname. 3. Same as family (in 1 meaning; obsolete). The whole family went to visit. “During the development of the Code of Laws on Marriage and Family, it became necessary to scientifically define the term surname. The Main Directorate of the USSR Registry Office turned to the onomastics group of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. As a result of the discussion, the following definition of the surname was adopted: hereditaryfamily name, stable no less than in three generations”, - says V.A. Nikonov.

Accordingly, in order to find out what the meaning and secret of a surname is, you need to turn to its origins, understand what their history and origin are. The surname is a very valuable material for research in different areas knowledge.

The history of the emergence of Russian surnames

The order was once Russian:

Ask: "Whose are you, what birth?"

The answer was clear, proud in Russian:

“I am the son of Peter. I am Petrov.

L. Onuchina

Russian surnames are common name family members, inherited for two generations.

In Rus', surnames were formed from the name of the ancestor and patronymic (Ivanov, Petrov); from the place or from the epithet at the place of residence of the ancestor (Zadorozhny, Zarechny); from the name of the city or locality from which the person came (Moskvitin, Tveritin, Permitin); from the profession, position of the ancestor (Sapozhnikov, Laptev, Prikazchikov, Bondar); from the birth order of the ancestor (Tretyak, Shestak); from ethnic background ancestor (Khokhlov, Litvinov, Polyakov, Tatarinov, Moskalev). More often, surnames were based on the nickname or patronymic of a member of the family, who distinguished himself in some way, moved to another locality, became the owner of the estate or the head of the big family. So they wrote in the documents: "centurion, Bloch's nickname"; "Undead Karga"; "First Dobrynya, calling Chernobrovets."

Let's remember the names of three epic heroes People: Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich, Alyosha Popovich.

Muromets is not a surname, but a nickname, reminiscent of the fact that the brave "Ilya son Ivanovich" he was from the city of Murom.

Dobrynya Nikitich is the son of Nikita.

Popovich - may seem like a surname to us, but in ancient times Popovich was a nickname for the occupation of his father - a priest.

In various social strata, surnames appeared in different time. The first in the 16-17 centuries. acquired the names of princes and boyars. In the 18-19 centuries. surnames of servicemen and merchants began to appear. They often reflected geographical concepts upon birth. The clergy began to acquire surnames only from the middle of the 18th century, usually formed from the names of parishes (Preobrazhensky, Nikolsky, Pokrovsky, etc.).

In the middle of the 19th century, especially after the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the surnames of peasants were formed (from the surnames of landowners, the names settlements, nicknames, patronymics), and for some they appeared only in the 30s of the 20th century.Currently, more than 200 thousand Russian surnames are known.

What's in a name?

Name history

Names, names, names -

In our speech it is no coincidence that:

How mysterious is this country

So the name is a mystery and a mystery.

What in the world can not do without? What pleases the ear better than any music? What is this riddle about? We were not - it was,

We will not be - it will be;

No one has seen him

And everyone has it. (Name)

Of course, it's its own name. People have been given names since ancient times. So, we read from the ancient Greek poet Homer in his Odyssey:

“There are no living people, and there cannot be, nameless:

In the very first moment after birth, each, poor and noble,

The name, like a sweet gift, receives from his relatives ... "

In the storehouse of folk Russian wisdom, many proverbs and sayings about names have been preserved:

In person, a person does not recognize himself, but he knows his name.

With the name Ivan, and without a name - a blockhead.

The poor nickname is naked.

Such a nickname that you can’t pronounce it in the cold.

Baptized pop Ivan, people called the blockhead.

The priest dubbed the wise man, but he is not known for that.

On Makar "all the bumps fall"

Where Makar did not drive calves

Anika is a warrior, she sits and howls.

The human name from ancient times has magic power, is the object of various theories and studies. The name is shrouded in a veil of secrecy. This mysterious world, diverse and colorful, influences our destinies in an incomprehensible way.

The role of a name in a person's life has always excited and will excite people. Historical opinion has developed that through a certain name it is possible to convey to a person the qualities of character and destiny.

It is important for every person to know the meaning own name, his origin, why this particular name was given to him and how popular it is among his peers. After all, a name is given at birth and accompanies a person all his life, being a kind of calling card its bearer.

And what do our names mean?

Names appeared at dawn human history, along with the appearance of speech. Although in the modern sense, the term “nicknames” would be best suited to the personal names of primitive tribes. However, the names came to people once and for all. The name is the first thing that is mentioned in a conversation when it comes to a particular person. A name is the first thing a person receives at birth. “Without a name, a child is an imp,” they said among the people.

And what is it - a name? In the dictionary of V. I. Dahl we read: a name is “a name, a name, a word that is called, means a person.” The original meaning of the name is to try to capture, designate with one exact word or phrase deep meaning things, reveal its essence, find its characteristic feature.

The names of people are part of history and peoples. Russian names interesting story. One of them lived long life and survived to our time, others appeared more recently.

Since ancient times, mankind has been reverent about the name. It wasn't just given. As a rule, it testified to the destiny of the child and was associated with the name of God, on whose patronage and protection they counted. Therefore, in many countries, the child was given two names: true and false. The true name was carefully hidden so that the evil forces would not use it and harm the person. IN ancient Russian chronicles there are such names as Nezhdan, Failure, Cucumber, Dislike, Onchutka (that is, "devil"), Bad, Bast, Saber, Blockhead, Filthy Pop ... However, it is a mistake to think that the people who wore them were everywhere superfluous, uninvited and unlucky. Our ancestors were very afraid of the evil eye, an evil word and intent. They believed that greatest danger exposed to the good, the honest, strong people. That is why caring parents called their child a "bad" name, hoping that it would protect their child from evil spirits. It is no coincidence that in many Russian fairy tales Ivanushka the fool turned out to be the smartest and most successful son himself.

And how melodious Slavic names! Men were called Velimir, Borislav, Ladomir, Izyaslav, Dobromir, Ratibor, Peresvet, Stoyan, Svyatogor, Miloslav, Khorobr. Women were given the names of Lyubava, Stanislav, Svetozar, Tikhomir, Milan, Miloslav, Lada, Zabava, Zlatotsveta, Zhdana, Golub, Veselin, Yaroslav. The meaning of these names is easy to determine, it is clear to us, the descendants. Unfortunately, Slavic names were unfairly forgotten, especially with the introduction of Christianity.

On early stage development of civilization, the inhabitants of Ancient Rus' bore nicknames taken from the names of animals, plants, things and everything that was always in sight. Some names were associated with events in people's lives, others indicated people's occupations, signs or features of a person's character. IN ancient Rus' there were many names. They now seem ridiculous to us, but they noted the most characteristics or external features a person, for example: Svetlana, Belyak, Chernysh, Mal, Oblique, Pockmarked, Curly. There were names that reflected the order in which children appeared, for example: First, Second, Elder. Here are some characteristics of names by character - Dobrynya, Brave, Gord, Silent, Clever, Nesmeyana, Annoyance, Dobrava; by profession - Kozhemyaka, Selyanin, etc. You can not believe in their authenticity, thinking that these are nicknames. But these are really the names of our ancestors.

There was a belief that if you give a child a name known in some locality bad people, then the child will acquire similar negative traits. Therefore, only good things should be given. From here a tradition was formed, which is widespread to this day, - naming a person "in someone's honor."

Modern names known to us: Alexander, Alexey, Ivan, Dmitry, Tatyana, Oksana and others came to us from other languages. Scientists have calculated that

90% of modern Russian names are foreign in origin. They came to us from Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic, Persian, Scandinavian languages withacceptance of Christianity.

And at baptism they began to give a person a middle name, ancient Greek, Latin, Hebrew and others. A foreign name was incomprehensible to a Russian person, they used it only in documents, but did not use it in everyday life.
