Today, craftsmen create very beautiful candles, which are truly a luxury item and a work of art. They give them unusual shapes, make them in the form of different figures. Modern candles are painted in different colors and scented with different fillings. So, let's start learning how to draw a candle for a Christmas tree, under a Christmas tree or on a festive table.

Stage 1. Draw auxiliary lines our candle. These are two straight lines, parallel to each other, drawn at a distance of approximately 5-7 cm (the width of your candle depends on this distance: will it be narrower or wider). Then, below these straight lines, we begin to round the base of the candle with curved lines towards each other. At the top, we’ll draw a smooth line at the hot top of our candle. This is a melted oval irregular shape, offset to one edge.

Stage 5. At the top of the candle we draw a wick - this is a thick, harsh thread. It sticks up from the substance of the candle, and a flame burns at its end. Let's draw a teardrop-shaped flame. It is directed upward.

Stage 6. Now let’s mark the lines of so-called light highlights on the candle drips, on the candle itself and the candlestick. Imagine that some light source is also directed at our candle and it is reflected on its parts.

Stage 7. Well, at the end we will decorate our candle different colors. As we have already said here, now the colors of candles can be very diverse. And white, and red, and pink, and orange, and blue, and blue, and green... Well, in short, all the colors that are possible. The candlestick can be painted gold or silver. The wick is always dark, usually black. Well, the candle flame itself is naturally yellow-orange, bright and hot! Happy New Year and happy holidays!

Let's choose a background for the candle. I chose dark brown. Take a brush and draw auxiliary lines on the layer. They will help you correctly present the candle.

Once the sketch is ready, we will start drawing the flames. To do this, we will create a group, call it fire, now in this group we will create a layer “ fire" For the group (just for the group, not for the layer) select (Base Lightening). Then select white And () ( Opacity(Opacity): 10% ), we will draw a candle flame.

Step 3.

Bringing back brushes Opacity(Opacity) - 100% . Let's start drawing a candle, we will need three colors: the main one, darker than the core and brighter. The lighter parts are the top surface, then the bottom right and the darker part is the bottom left. We sketched a candle in the shape of a parallelepiped.

Step 4.

Using (Blur Tool) we will soften the corners. The transition between colors becomes calmer, but the outlines must be left straight and even.

Step 5.

We draw a candle that was lit just a couple of seconds ago. Therefore, it should not be in drops of wax. But since the candle melts quite quickly, we draw the melted wax near the flame. For this purpose we use () And(Blur Tool)

Step 6.

Still, the wax quickly melts and begins to flow down the wall of the candle a little. Draw drops using Brush Tool(Brush) (two shades: lighter and darker than the background with which we painted it), then smear it with Blur Tool(Blur). Don't forget to draw a shadow.

Step 7

Now we create the reflection of the flame. Copy the flame layer and place it in the group as well. The flame is displayed vertically. Now we have two identical candle flames, let's use (Eraser Tool / Key "E") and erase unnecessary parts of the image.

Step 8

The candle should also be reflected on the surface where it stands. To create this reflection, we place a small part of the candle below. We copy and paste onto a new layer. (Fill opacity) for this layer is approximately 45% . Let's use () and draw a shadow between the candles and the surface. Then select normal brush black and start drawing the wick.

Step 9

We draw the wick: its tip should be orange, as it burns in the candle flame.

Step 10

Flame: Let's draw the reflection that this flame creates. We use () ( Highlights(Backlight) 100% ), make the melted wax transparent.

Step 11

Using the same tools, we make the transparent top of the candle. This should be the most light shade.

To draw the smoke we will create a new layer in the group " Fire" Choose white color ( Opacity(Opacity): 30% ), brush with the following settings as shown below.

Let's start working on the shine. Let's draw the rays, for this we must create new group(with the same settings as the group " Fire") and place it above all layers. Use the above mentioned brush ( Opacity(Opacity): 50% ), draw the area around the candle (closer to the flame it should be brighter and shiny).

Let's apply (Filter - Blur - Radial Blur) to this layer with the settings as shown below. Then press the key combination three times Ctrl+F to repeat the action.

Step 15

Now you need to darken the light at the base of the candle. For this purpose we will use () ( Midtones(Mid tones), 50% ).

Using the same tool, darken the background a little. This will make it seem like the light from the candle is brighter.

Let's give the candle a more saturated shade. For this purpose we will use Airbrush Soft Round(Soft round brush), Opacity(Opacity): 50% , in addition, let's draw something similar to smoke. Then change the layer blending mode (for this layer) to (Saturation).

Using (Blur Tool) we will smooth out the inner area of the flame (including the layers with drops of wax). Now the fire looks more believable.

Let's go (Image - Correction - Brightness / Contrast), for the layer with the image of a candle, and achieve a purple tint.

Click Ctrl+U, and we have a menu Hue/Saturation(Hue/Saturation), set the settings as shown below.

The smoke should be brighter. Let's correct this using (Eraser Tool / E Key) ( Opacity(Opacity): 35% ).

I want to talk about how to correctly draw such a beautiful light source as a candle. Such an ancient household item can become the main character in paintings on the theme of mysticism.

It is very convenient to draw candles with pastels - regular or wax. It’s good when the material is covering, that is, it covers the surface of the paper well. It will be colored, this is the darkness in which the candle will burn. I provide a table of the colors used so that you can navigate and choose similar ones.

Come up with general composition: the shape of the candle, in which candlestick it will stand, what will lie next to it. I came up with a plot on the theme of fortune telling: a candle in front of a mirror and cards.

The candle is a cylinder. When it burns for a long time, its top is often melted and uneven. Draw a pale outline with a simple pencil, then the wick, then the flame. Light a candle or find a photo on the Internet: the flame can stand straight or sway, be thin, elongated or small. I chose a middle option.

We draw with color. At the base the flame is darker, scarlet, purple or blue. Towards the tip it brightens - almost white. It's better to start with white pencil, adding beige (wheat, cream) yellow, pink, then red and blue closer to the bottom of the flame. Sets of pencils, and most importantly - vision, can be different, so you can’t say exactly what to mix in what proportions; be guided by your feelings.

Let the strokes be light at first, then intensify the colors, drive the pencil into the paper. A little secret: when applying light tones over dark ones, the surface smoothes out, becomes pasty, and the colors smoothly flow into each other. This is especially noticeable when drawing wax crayons or pencils.

The light spreads out in all directions and forms a halo. Try to make the strokes to the edge farthest from the candle as light as possible, dissolving into the darkness. Start with beige and/or pink tones, then intensify the effect with white closer to the flame.

We draw the wick with black and gray and continue from dark to light to draw the wax candle. Despite its cylindrical shape, it does not have the shadows typical of, say, a glass. The light falls from above, this is where the lightest area will be located, while downwards the candle is darker, with warm shades. This painting uses yellow and brown ocher, light sienna, white, wheat, and orange.

The shadow of the candle itself falls on the candlestick, so the reflections of light are barely noticeable; apply them to indicate volume.

The candlestick is dark. Start with chocolate, brown ocher, add orange, gray, ocher on top. For a dense surface you will need a considerable number of layers.

In turn, the shadow from the candlestick falls on the table. There are cards on the table, and it is better to first draw them first, and then the shadow, blurry from the vibrations of the flame, with a simple pencil with shading.

Candle light on the mirror gives an interesting effect: it seems to be covered with golden dust. Let's depict this using light touches of beige and ocher. Light meets darkness: using a graphite pencil to create space in the mirror. Remember that a candle illuminates from below those objects that are located above it; it is this lighting that gives the picture mystery and a mystical shade.

I combine graphite pencil with colored ones, it is shaded and it is easier for them to create unsteady outlines of shadows. In general, you can mix any techniques, the main thing is that the result justifies it.

Black, chocolate, gray and yellow ocher are used for the frame. Ocher gave a golden hue, conveying warm light candles. Note that the frame under the “halo” is almost invisible.

I create the tablecloth using light touches of wheat and white.

So, the scene with the candle is ready. Not a bad subject for a Christmas card.
