Vasily Terkin - folk hero (based on the poem by A. Tvardovsky "Vasily Terkin")

>Compositions based on the work of Vasily Terkin

folk hero

Vasily Terkin - the main character of the poem of the same name by A. T. Tvardovsky; an ordinary guy from Smolensk peasants who dreams of bringing victory to his country in the Great Patriotic War. He is the embodiment of the best features of the Russian soldier and the whole people. Terkin's motto: "Cheer up." This guy is so optimistic and life-loving that his positive attitude is transmitted to all those with whom he communicates. Depicting Terkin, the author wanted to emphasize that this is a collective image - the personification of all the other ordinary soldiers of the country, only with a high level of enthusiasm. As he said, such a person "is always in every company, and in every platoon."

Tvardovsky's poem appeared in 1945. The author himself was a front-line writer and knew what he writes about firsthand. In this work, he showed a true picture of the era, a picture of the life of his people. Not surprisingly, the poem was an instant success. Initially, it was called "The Book of a Fighter", then Tvardovsky nevertheless changed the name to emphasize the importance of the protagonist and the role of such daring guys in the war. Vasily Terkin can, no doubt, be ranked among the folk heroes. In one of the chapters, he did manage to receive an order.

This happened in the spring of 1942, when, under the roar of a bomber, the soldiers lay prone, and Terkin stood up and shot down an enemy plane with a shot from a rifle. Lying in the hospital, he met a young man from Tambov, who had already become a hero, and Terkin wanted to bring the same pride to his native Smolensk region. Under no circumstances did the hero lose heart. In the chapter "The Crossing", risking his life, he swam across an icy river to save his comrades. At the same time, he did not boast of his heroism, did not flaunt it, which earned him even more respect. In the chapter "Death and the Warrior", he was almost killed, but found the courage to face death.

Apparently, for the author, a folk hero must have not only courage and courage, but also resourcefulness and ingenuity. Therefore, he endowed his hero with the ability to quickly navigate not only at the front, but also in everyday situations. He could easily repair any damage, such as in the chapter "Two Soldiers". In a word, Terkin was a jack of all trades, a shirt-guy and the most ordinary native of the Russian outback. He showed proper respect for his elders, was modest where necessary and cheerful with friends. At the same time, he could easily take the enemy prisoner, go through shelling, and engage in hand-to-hand combat with the Germans. This is how a real folk hero should be.

Vasily Terkin - folk hero

In order to understand and appreciate the true extent of the artist’s talent, his contribution to literature, one must proceed from what he said about life and man, how his vision of the world correlates with the moral and aesthetic ideals, ideas and tastes of the people. Tvardovsky never aspired to be original. Every pose, every artificiality is alien to him:

Here are the verses, and everything is clear.

Everything is in Russian.

Brilliant craftsmanship, folk art of Alexander Trifonovich are visible both in the principles of artistic understanding of our life, and in the creation of national characters of the era, the renewal of poetic genres. V. Soloukhin said very rightly: “Tvardovsky is the largest Russian Soviet poet of the thirties, forties and fifties because the most important, most decisive events in the life of the country and people were best reflected in his poetry.”

Throughout the war, while at the front, Tvardovsky worked on the poem "Vasily Terkin" - a work that was both a true chronicle of the war, an inspiring propaganda word, and a deep understanding of the heroic feat of the people. The poem reflects the main stages of the Great Patriotic War, from its first days to the complete victory over the enemy. This is how the poem develops, this is how it is built:

These lines and pages

Days and miles a special account,

Like from the western border

To my native capital,

And from that native capital

Back to the western border

And from the western border

Down to the enemy capital

We made our trip.

The depiction of the war presented considerable difficulties for writers. Here one could stray into embellished reports in the spirit of superficial cheer-optimism, or fall into despair and present the war as a continuous hopeless horror. In the introduction to "Vasily Terkin" Tvardovsky defined his approach to the theme of war as a desire to show the "existing truth", "no matter how bitter". War is drawn by the poet without any embellishment. The anguish of retreat, painful anxiety for the fate of the Motherland, the pain of separation from loved ones, hard military labors and sacrifices, the ruin of the country, severe cold - all this is shown in "Terkin" as the truth requires, no matter how it hits the soul. But the poem does not leave a depressing impression at all, does not plunge into despondency. The poem is dominated by faith in the victory of good over evil, light over darkness. And in the war, as Tvardovsky shows it, in the respite between battles, people rejoice and laugh, sing and dream, take a steam bath with pleasure and dance in the cold. To overcome the difficult trials of the war, the author of the poem and its hero are helped by their boundless love for the Motherland and understanding of the just nature of the struggle against fascism. The refrain runs throughout the poem:

The fight is holy and right

Mortal combat is not for glory,

For life on earth.

“Vasily Terkin” is a “book about a fighter”. Terkin appears on the first pages of the work as an unpretentious joker soldier who knows how to amuse and amuse the fighters on a campaign and at a halt, ingenuously chuckling at the missteps of his comrades. But his joke always contains a deep and serious thought: the hero reflects on cowardice and courage, loyalty and generosity, great love and hatred. However, the poet saw his task not only in truthfully drawing the image of one of the millions of people who took on their shoulders the brunt of the fight against the enemy. Gradually, the image of Terkin more and more acquires generalized, almost symbolic features. The hero personifies the people:

Into battle, forward, into pitch fire

He goes, saint and sinner,

Russian miracle man.

The high skill of the poet was manifested in the fact that he managed, without embellishing, but not “grounding” the hero, to embody in him the fundamental moral qualities of the Russian people: patriotism, awareness of responsibility for the fate of the Motherland, readiness for selfless deed, love for work. The image of the folk hero Vasily Terkin, created by Tvardovsky, personifies the unbending character of a soldier, his courage and steadfastness, humor and resourcefulness.

Tvardovsky's poem is an outstanding, truly innovative work. Both the content and its form are truly folk. Therefore, it became the most significant poetic work about the Great Patriotic War, fell in love with millions of readers and, in turn, gave rise to hundreds of imitations and “continuations” among the people.

According to a Red Army reader who wrote a letter from the front to the author of The Book of fighter”, the poem “Vasily Terkin” is an “encyclopedia of front-line life”. War is drawn by the poet without embellishment. The anguish of retreat, painful anxiety for the fate of the Motherland, the pain of separation from loved ones, hard military labor, the ruin of the country, severe frosts - all this is shown in "Terkin" as the truth required:

And everything else is more forest Not to live for sure Without what? Without real truth, Truth, right in the soul of the beating ...

To overcome the difficult trials of the war, the author and the hero are helped by their boundless love for the Motherland, their readiness to give their lives for its liberation. The main character - Terkin Vasily Ivanovich, an ordinary infantryman from the Smolensk peasants - embodies the best features of the Russian soldier and the people as a whole.

Terkin - who is he? Let's be honest: It's just a guy by himself. He's ordinary.

No wonder this hero was so fond of readers, many of whom even considered him a real person and worried about his fate. One of the front-line readers wrote to Tvardovsky: “Many fighters find the Terkins among their own. Vasya Terkin is our Red Army hero. You wonderfully managed to portray the soul of a fighter, everything that a fighter feels in battle. That is why Vasily Terkin became the favorite hero of the Red Army fighting family.

Indeed, the poet managed to show a truly folk, national character. This is the “holy and sinful Russian miracle man” who survived and won in the greatest of wars. Separate episodes of the book - combat pictures and scenes of a soldier's life - subtly and accurately reveal the moral character, psychology of a fighter.

The personification of courage, courage, clear people's mind, endurance, sparkling folk humor - this is how Ter-kin entered the hearts of millions of readers. The main feature of Terkin is his patriotism. He loves his native land, its nature, folk music-ku-horn. He feels his responsibility "for Russia, for the people and for everything in the world." No wonder the leitmotif in the poem is the repeatedly repeated words:

The battle is holy and right, Mortal combat is not for the sake of glory, For the sake of life on earth.

At the same time, Vasily Terkin's patriotism is true, and not flashy. Performing feats, showing true courage and fearlessness, Terkin is absolutely devoid of false pathos. “I agree to a medal,” he remarks jokingly. Terkin has a sense of camaraderie and inexhaustible humor and optimism no matter what. material from the site

Artistic features. There are many funny jokes, sayings, and jokes in Terkin's stories. This is a truly folk language that conveys the expression of colloquial speech. The poet includes in the speech of both Terkin and other heroes of the poem a huge number of proverbs and sayings (it was about ointment, the guy is at least somewhere, etc.), colorful soldier's phrases (the cook would have his own guy; to whom memory, to whom glory, to whom is dark water, etc.).

B.L. Pasternak called the poem "a miracle of dissolution in the folk element." The subtle stylist and master of the artistic word I.A. Bunin gave the poem the highest rating: “This is truly a rare book: what freedom, what wonderful prowess, what accuracy, accuracy in everything and what an extraordinary folk soldier's language - not a hitch, not a single false, ready-made, that is, literary-vulgar word! »
