The Church of the last times will be alive and blessed. Church in the face of retreat

Archbishop Feofan (Bystrov, 1872†1940) of Poltava and Pereyaslavl:

“The general conclusion from all the materials that I have about church life both here and in Russia under the yoke turns out to be terrible. But, of course, among the general darkness there is also a “graceful remnant,” by which the Orthodox faith is still kept both there and here.

“Our time is like the last. Salt is suffocating. – In the higher pastors of the Church, there remains a weak, dark, confused, incorrect understanding of the letter, which kills the spiritual life in Christian society, destroys Christianity, which is a deed, not a letter. It is hard to see who are entrusted into the hands of the sheep of Christ, who are given their guidance and salvation. But this is the permission of God. Let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains!” Such words once characterized the state of contemporary church affairs by the great Russian saints - Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow and Bishop Ignatius (Bryanchaninov), about sixty years ago. Is it not with great right that we can repeat these formidable words of theirs at the present time!?” (December 9, 1931).

“Regarding church life, in the speeches of the Savior, it is indicated for us, as one of the most amazing phenomena of the last times, that then the stars will fall from heaven (Matthew 24:29).

According to the explanation of the Savior Himself, the stars are the Angels of the Churches, that is, the bishops (Rev. 1:20).

The religious and moral fall of bishops is thus one of the most characteristic signs of recent times. Especially terrible is the fall of the bishops when they fall away from the dogmas of the faith or, as the apostle puts it, when they want to turn the gospel of Christ (Gal. 1:7). The apostle commands such people to pronounce an anathema: whoever preaches to you something other than what you have received, let him be anathema (Gal. 1:9).”

“The judgment of God is approaching over the nations and hypocritical Christians, starting with heretical and lukewarm hierarchs.” (April 31, 1936).

“The times of quiet, calm are over. Ahead of grief awaits people and severe suffering. First of all, there will be a world war, as it is said in the Gospel: nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom (Matthew 24:7). For the multiplication of iniquities, for the apostasy, which the Lord called the abomination of desolation, standing in a holy place (Matt. 24:15), in other words, this is the Church [which stopped offering prayers for the Anointed King, for the Incarnate name of God!], for sins [renunciation of his God-anointed Tsar], first of all, the episcopate, and then the priesthood, as well as the ruling persons in the state, for all this the Lord allows [a Jew to scour the Russian Land with a scorpion, plunder its shrines, close the churches of God, execute the best people Russians, so that the Russian people come to the mind of Christ"

“... In the Church, disasters will come to the point that only two, many - three hierarchs will remain faithful to God. I don't speak for myself. And what I heard from the inspired elders, I conveyed ... "

“The Lord will have mercy on Russia for the sake of a small remnant of true believers. In Russia, the elders said, by the will of the people, the Monarchy, Autocratic power would be restored. Russia will be a powerful State... The Lord has chosen the future Tsar. This will be a man of fiery faith, a brilliant mind and an iron will. He will first of all restore order in the Orthodox Church [as its Head], removing all untrue, heretical and lukewarm bishops. And many, very many, with few exceptions, almost all will be eliminated, and new, true, unshakable bishops will take their place. He will be from the Romanov family.

Even people who are far from the Church are interested in predictions about wars, disasters, global catastrophes... But, unfortunately, few delve into the essence of the prophecies of the lights of Orthodoxy about church apostasy, etc. "Eighth Ecumenical Council". But it is precisely the deviation from the true faith, from fidelity to God, that is the root cause of earthly disasters. So, what does the word of God and the Holy Fathers warn us about?

In previous issues of the information bulletin "Orthodox Cross" it was reported on October 31 this year. in Moscow of the conference "The Eighth Ecumenical Council" and its questions" and the speech of the chairman of the "People's Council" of Ukraine and Novorossiya, Igor Mikhailovich Druz, and the report of Anna Safronova, a student of the St. Petersburg Orthodox Institute of Religious Studies and Church Arts, were published. Today we offer for reading the text of the current speech by Anastasia Sorokina, editor-in-chief of the Voice of the Orthodox People portal, on the topic of the prophecies of the Holy Fathers and ascetics of piety about apostasy in the Church and the “eighth ecumenical council”.

The fact that our time is not easy, some kind of unusual, is felt today, probably, by everyone. Technologies, transport are developing rapidly, we are surrounded by new means of communication, the Internet is penetrating everywhere ... Such a flow of information and fuss has not been observed on earth before. And it seems that such situations, such challenges as now, have never happened in the world; that the time is special, and therefore the way of life must also be somehow special. Maybe that's why Orthodox people are tempted to make some concessions to modernity, adapt to the demands of this world, whose prince is we all know who. However, we also know that the Lord is always the same - like a thousand years ago, a hundred years ago, now, in the future, and until the end of time. And in order not to stray from the right path in these evil times, to discern evil masquerading under the guise of good, a believer needs to turn to the experience of life and the soul-saving instructions of the Holy Fathers and ascetics of piety, including modern pillars of faith, to whom the Lord revealed the destinies of men and peace.

Even people who are far from the Church are interested in predictions about wars, disasters, global catastrophes... But, unfortunately, few delve into the essence of the prophecies of the lights of Orthodoxy about church apostasy, etc. "Eighth Ecumenical Council". But it is precisely the departure from the true faith, from fidelity to God and His Holy Church, according to her teaching, that is the root cause of earthly disasters. So, what does the word of God and the Holy Fathers warn us about?

In the gospel Lord speaks of future events, predicting that the time will come when Christians will be persecuted and killed, thinking that in this way they please God (see: John 16, 2) So, at some point, people who call themselves believers (Orthodox?) will begin to oppress and destroy true Orthodox. Why? Obviously, because these "believers" in reality will deviate far from faith, deviate from its purity.

In the Divine Revelation of the Apostle John the Theologian, containing a prophecy about the kingdom and the church of the Antichrist, it is said that all the inhabitants of the earth, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, will worship the “son of perdition” (Rev. 13, 8). In general, reading Revelation is very sobering for a person's soul, but: “Who is reading the Apocalypse now? - exclaimed at the end of the 19th century Venerable Optina elder Barsanuphius.- He who will read the Apocalypse before the end of the world will be truly blessed, for he will understand what is happening, and, understanding, he will prepare himself. While reading, he will see in the events described in the Apocalypse, certain events contemporary to him…”.

In Holy Scripture we also find an important prophecy holy apostle paul referring to the end times: The Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. For when they say, "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, just as childbirth comes upon a woman in her womb, and they will not escape (1 Thess. 5:2-3). And we see that the unification of all "churches" is being imposed today on the Orthodox just under the pretext of achieving "peace and security", confronting military conflicts, various human threats. But here's what "Serbian Chrysostom" said about the real opposition to evil on earth Saint Nicholas (Velimirovich):“It is impossible to equate the Good News with other beliefs in the name of “tolerance” and in the “interests of peace” between people and nations. Because this is the beginning, the birth of wars and revolutions, unheard of before in the history of the world.

The so-called. The "Pan-Orthodox Council", as well as other similar initiatives, according to the statements of their authors, allegedly pursue missionary goals - they are called to testify about Orthodoxy "in the secular world." But Orthodoxy throughout its history has testified to itself without crafty intermediaries, and the Ecumenical Councils were not convened for this at all, but for the sake of affirming the unfalse Church teaching and overthrowing the heresies that shook the Church. There were seven Ecumenical Councils that once and for all imprinted the truth in their resolutions, and at the beginning of the 20th century another spoke about the fact that the eighth was no longer needed. Optina elder - Nectarius. When asked whether there would be a union of the Churches, he replied: “No, only the Ecumenical Council could do this, but there will be no more Council. There were Seven Councils, like seven Sacraments, seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. For our age, the fullness of the number is seven. The number of the future age is eight. Only individuals will join our Church.” Please note: the elder said “to join”, and not to unite, which is what the ecumenists hope for, in their speeches blaspheming the Holy Church, as if “having sinned with the sin of separation.”

Also at the beginning of the 20th century Confessor of the Royal Family, ascetic of piety, Archbishop Theophan of Poltava to the question of whether the “eighth ecumenical council” would take place, he answered: “I still do not know anything about the “eighth ecumenical council”. I can only say in the words of Saint Theodore the Studite: “Not every assembly of bishops is a Council, but only an assembly of bishops who stand in Truth.” So Vladyka Theophan made it clear to all the faithful that they have the right not to accept, to reject the non-Orthodox decisions of the bishops' meetings.

The impending retreat was predicted with amazing accuracy Rev. Kuksha of Odessa. In the middle of the last century, he said that the last times were coming: “Soon there will be an ecumenical council called “saint”. But this will be the same “eighth council”, which will be a gathering of the godless. On it, all faiths will unite into one. Then all fasts will be abolished (we note the word “then”, that is, not necessarily right at the council, but, perhaps, soon after it), monasticism will be completely destroyed, bishops will be married, the new calendar will be introduced in the Ecumenical Church ”( i.e., in fact, in the prophecy of the saint of God, topics from the agenda of the upcoming "Pan-Orthodox" meeting are listed). Further, the monk warns: “Be vigilant! Try to visit temples while they are still ours.” And the most formidable words: "Soon it will be impossible to go there, everything will change."

It is known that in the middle of the 20th century the most active figure in the ecumenical movement in Russia was Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov). Among his flock and students, he planted the ideas of Eucharistic communion with Catholics, the need to introduce renovation innovations, including the replacement of the Julian church calendar with the "new style", according to which the papists serve. On this occasion Elder Hieroschemamonk Stefan (Ignatenko) warned his children: “If they introduce and serve according to the new style, in no case do not go to this temple. Not all even bishops will switch to the new style. So hold on to those who remain faithful to Orthodoxy. While there is a possibility, go to the temple. There will come a time when it will be impossible to go to church. The church will go into the catacombs. But the Lord will not leave His faithful servants. True priests and bishops will remain, who will also go into the catacombs. There will be terrible confusion. People will run in different directions ... ".

In 1948, another pillar of the faith sounded a formidable accusatory prophecy, Reverend Lawrence of Chernigov: “Do not be surprised when you hear that in the temples someone prays in different ways (obviously, the saint warned about the reformation of worship). As in the “golden hats” they say not to read the Psalter, and then the clock, then the Lord will be patient, patient, but how shy! ..». Let us recall how much the divine services have already been reduced in many churches - the All-Night Vigil in some parishes lasts only an hour and a half, or even less! The Monk Lawrence also warned against much concern about the external construction and improvement of churches to the detriment of internal work, calling such constructions pre-Tichrist: “The domes of both churches and bell towers will be gilded, and when the main one is finished, then the time will come for the reign of the Antichrist. See how insidious all this is being prepared? All the temples will be in the greatest splendor, as never before, and it will be impossible to go to those temples, since the Bloodless Sacrifice of Jesus Christ will not be offered there.

Understand: there will be churches, but an Orthodox Christian will not be able to attend them, since there will be all the “satanic gathering”! I repeat once again that it will be impossible to go to those churches: there will be no grace in them! To understand these frightening words, one can cite a historical example with the “living churchmen”, the renovationists of the 20th century: many priests, for various reasons (for false beliefs, under pressure from the authorities ...) transferred to the “communist church”, while the faithful fathers did not bless visiting it . And in one of the prophetic visions Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt the temples of the renovationists were shown as places where the abomination of desolation reigns.

In his prophecies, the Monk Lavrenty assigned a special place to Ukraine, as well as Belgorod elder Seraphim (Tyapochkin). The latter, in particular, strictly warned that those of its inhabitants who oppose an alliance with Russia - even if they consider themselves believers - become servants of the devil.

Let us recall the names of other modern ascetics of piety - Archpriest Nikolai Rogozin, Hegumen Guriy (Chezlov), Schema-Archimandrite Christopher of Tula. They also warned their spiritual children about the coming times of persecution of the Orthodox and apostasy from the purity of the faith, about the creation of a single global kingdom and a single church of the Antichrist. But, what is characteristic, in all the instructions and prophecies of these luminaries of Orthodoxy, there is an indication of the inadmissibility of leaving the Church as a red thread. They taught: one must beware of deviating into heresy, but one must not go into schism either. It is necessary to fight for the purity of faith inside the church fence, to the end!

Returning to the predictions of St. Lawrence, let us single out another important topic - the secularization of the clergy and monasticism. The Holy Father predicted: “The last time is coming, when the clergy will also be carried away by worldly vain wealth. They will not think about their own salvation, much less about others. They will have cars and dachas, they will visit resort places, time will be spent cleaning large beautiful monastery premises, and the Jesus Prayer will be taken away. They will forget about her! Then they themselves will go the wrong way, which they need to go, and they will lead the cowardly people behind them. But you be wise and prudent. Listen to their beautiful words, but do not follow their deeds. However, the saint’s prophecies are crowned with a comforting promise: “All heresies and schisms in Russia will disappear thanks to the Tsar, but only for a short time, for then the Terrible Judge will come to judge the living and the dead.”

Many Orthodox also know a vivid prophecy regarding the same problem, Reverend Seraphim of Sarov. Having seen through the revelation of God the deplorable state of mind of the bishops and priests of the last times, Father Seraphim cried out: “It would be better if I be deprived of the Kingdom of Heaven, Lord, only have mercy on them!” But the righteous Lord answered the monk that this was impossible, for these people voluntarily chose their fate, departing from the true faith and teaching the people "the doctrines and commandments of men." According to the father's "servant" N.A. Motovilov, Seraphim of Sarov also predicted that since by the end of the centuries “the Russian bishops will become so impious that they will surpass the Greek bishops in the time of Theodosius the Younger in their wickedness, so that even the most important dogma of Christ’s faith - the Resurrection of Christ and the general resurrection will not be believed,” then the Lord He will raise him up, as it were from a dream, for the affirmation of the truth of the resurrection of the dead.

“The reigning serenity worries me,” said another great ascetic, Elder of the 20th century Paisius Svyatogorets. – <…>The apostasy has come, and now it remains only for the “son of perdition” to come (see: 2 Thess. 2, 3).<…>If the Church is silent so as not to come into conflict with the state, if the metropolitans are silent, if the monks are silent, then who will speak?! The ascetic saw the growing indifference of people to God, leading to indifference in all areas of life. The elder taught his children to have “good anxiety”: “Earlier, if any pious layman or priest, or even more so a monk, cared about what was happening in the world, it was believed that he should be locked in a tower, in prison [for repentance] . Today, those who do not care about this must be locked in the tower, because the enemies of Christ want to destroy everything. How relevant these words are today, when many priests say to parishioners zealous for the purity of Orthodoxy: “You are not doing that! Don't worry, it's none of your business! Pay more attention to your spiritual life! Father Paisius lamented this pseudo-spirituality: “Oh, if by prayer they reached such a state that they would not apply care to anything, then I would kiss their feet! But no, they are indifferent, because they want to be good for everyone and live happily ever after.” And then he reproaches those who propose not to denounce heretics, allegedly out of love for them, saying that this comes “from a falsely understood kindness.<…>So, wanting to show their "highest nobility", they end up bowing to the two-horned devil. “Let there be one religion,” they say and put everything on the same level<…>. Today they are trying to destroy faith, and in order for the building of faith to collapse, they are slowly removing stones. But we are responsible for not letting the enemies of the Church ruin everything,” the God-wise elder sternly warned.

He also spoke about the main reason for church apostasy Rev. Anatoly of Optina (Potapov):“And now, as a result of the impoverishment of piety, heresies and schisms will go on in the Church, and then, as the Holy Fathers predicted, there will be no experienced and skillful people in spiritual warfare on the thrones of hierarchs and monasteries. From this, heresies will spread everywhere and deceive many. The enemy of the human race will act with cunning to incline even the elect to heresy<…>. Heretics will take power over the Church, they will place their servants everywhere, and piety will be neglected.

He is echoed by the recently glorified by the Georgian Church Saint Gabriel (Urgebadze): “In the last time, the supporters of the Antichrist will go to church, will be baptized and will preach the gospel commandments. But do not believe those who will not have good works. Only by deeds can a true Christian be known.”

The outstanding Serbian theologian of the 20th century tells us the same thing. Saint Justin (Popovich) of Cheli:“In general, the question of preparing and convening a new ‘ecumenical council’ is not new.<…>. This question was already raised during the lifetime of the unfortunate Patriarch Meletios (Metaxakis) of Constantinople, a well-known vain modernist and reformer, the creator of a schism in Orthodoxy, at his so-called “pan-Orthodox congress” in Constantinople in 1923…”. That is, the "eighth ecumenical" has been in preparation for more than 90 years! At the same time, as St. Justin further notes, the catalog of his topics was constantly modified, invariably remaining "a scholastic-Protestant series of dry humanistic theorems." The Holy Father appealed to the archpastors of his day with a convincing request to abandon the idea of holding such a forum, since “only one thing can be expected from him: schisms, heresies and the death of many souls.<…>Such a Council, instead of healing, will open new wounds on the Body of the Church and create new problems and suffering for her.”

So, on the basis of all the above predictions of saints and ascetics of piety, we can conclude that the preparation for the "Pan-Orthodox Council" is a consequence of apostasy processes in the Church and the world, approaching the reign of the Antichrist. And we, the Orthodox people, as God's saints instruct, should not only know our faith well, but live it, look at everything that happens with spiritual eyes - in the light of Divine Revelation.

I would like to end with the following prophetic instructions. Let's not forget that, according to the words of St. Lawrence, only "the Tsar will cleanse the Church from all heresies and schisms." And further - Saint Theophan the Recluse designated: "The root elements of Russian life: Orthodoxy, Autocracy, Nationality - that is, the Church, the Tsar and the Kingdom." And the Monk Anatoly of Optina warned: “If there is no Tsar, there will be no Russia either. Like a man with a severed head, so Russia without a Tsar will be a stinking corpse. Bishop Theophan of Poltava, and Blessed Mother Matrona of Moscow, and Elder Sheikhumen Jerome of Sanaksar, and the light of our time, Metropolitan John ( Snychev), and the revered father Nikolai Guryanov from Zalit Island ...

Lord, through the prayers of the holy Royal Martyrs and all Your saints, and especially of our Sovereign Lady Theotokos, preserve the Orthodox faith, which is attacked by the heretical! Amen.

Apostasy

Apostasy (Greek αποστασία - apostasy, betrayal, falling away) - apostasy, betrayal of the Christian faith and falling away from it.

In the Greek text of the Old Testament (Septuagint), the word apostasy occurs in the meaning of apostasy from God (Jer. 2:19, Jos. 22:22), and has a clear religious meaning. In the New Testament, the word apostasy means apostasy or departure from the Christian faith (Luke 8:13, 1 Tim. 4:1-3, Heb. 3:12, 2 Pet. 2:20, 3:17).

Since the time of St. Cyprian of Carthage, the Church has encountered the concept of apostate (Greek αποστατης - apostate), which is applied to Christians who fell away from the faith during persecution.

Apostasy as a world phenomenon was prophetically predicted by the Apostle Paul, who considers it one of the main signs of the eschatological events preceding the Last Judgment (“for that day will not come until the apostasy first comes” - ή αποστασία, 2 Thess. 2:3).

Christianity gave civilization everything: the concept of personality and the concept of the right and freedom of the individual, the concept of social security, and much more. It is thanks to Christianity that people live satisfyingly, for a long time, with comforts. And so - the idea arose that now everything is in order, and therefore God is no longer needed. Apostasy is mass apostasy. Marina Zhurinskaya

- Is it true assertion that in eve of the arrival of the antichrist there will be no spiritual fathers (elders) and Christians will forced take care of your own salvation?

The last times are the time of the great apostasy. The Holy Fathers tremblingly describe the terrible scale of humanity's apostasy from God. But at the same time they testify that the Christians of the last times will be higher than the martyrs of the period of the first persecutions of the Church. God will give them greater grace.

And here a question arises for me: how can they achieve such a high spiritual state without the Church? No. The Church of the last times will be alive and blessed. The Apocalypse also testifies to this.

And once there is a Church, there will be bishops, priests, monks and laity. The fact that there will be few of them and they will be persecuted is not so important. The Savior Himself told us, “Fear not, little flock.” Even in the last terrible times, the Orthodox will be able to find a foothold and receive support from spiritual fathers. I believe that the Lord will take special care and comfort Christians. Including through the confessors who will be next to them.

Such a phenomenon as apostasy can harm many of us, but only those who will not live spiritually and have a real connection with God. Those who have a thirst for Christ, a desire to be with the Lord, the Grace of God will never leave.

Let's remember the Soviet era. In published books, we read how few elders and confessors were able to support the Orthodox people. But despite this, the laity, who longed to be with the Lord, had spiritual mentors! Despite huge and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

- At the same time, even in our time, many Christians, referring to the fact that there are no real elders and confessors left, do not have a permanent spiritual leader.

This state of affairs carries great danger. This is a deadly delusion!

We must find not the great elders and confessors, but ourselves. We should humbly ask the Lord to give us a spiritual mentor. And no matter how small he is (in virtue, in fame…), the Lord will bless and direct our spiritual life through him for our humility.

It is not the absence of elders that is to blame, but our lack of desire to truly live a spiritual life. If we sincerely want to be with Christ, the Lord can raise confessors and elders from stones.

Sometimes people come to our monastery and ask: are there on Athos today people like Elder Paisios the Svyatogorets? But it is wrong to ask the question this way. And today there are many elders and ascetic monks. But the problem lies within us. Can we simply and humbly ask what interests us? Can we be obedient?

The elders have always been and always will be.

Lay people and monks of our time should strive to listen to their spiritual father with humility and obedience, and not spend their lives in search of great elders.

This is especially true for monks. According to the Holy Fathers, there are only three reasons why a monk can leave his monastery and look for a new spiritual mentor: if the abbot is a heretic, if the monastery is open to women or small children live in it.

- What should be the place of the hesychast tradition in the life of monks and laity today?

The Hesychast tradition is the quintessence of the Orthodox Church and the basis of the life of an Orthodox Christian.

Let us recall the life of St. Gregory Palamas. Once in the Berean desert, he made friends with one simple old man, the silent Job. He, once listening to St. Gregory, who expressed the idea that not only ascetics, but all Christians should pray unceasingly, did not agree with him and objected that unceasing prayer is the duty of only monks, and not laity. Gregory Palamas, not wanting to offend the elder and not liking verbosity, fell silent. But as soon as Job returned to his cell and began to pray, an angel appeared to him and said:

- Do not doubt, old man, in the truth of the words of Gregory - he spoke and speaks the truth; so think also you, and pass it on to others.

The hesychast tradition includes not only the creation of mental prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”) but also the entire spectrum of spiritual life. This is the struggle for purification from passions, and the acquisition of virtues opposite to them.

If we lose contact with the hesychast tradition, we (laymen and monks) will go astray from the path of salvation. Let's wander into a hopeless dead end of various Western Christian doctrines.

For example, let's dive into pietism - the doctrine according to which we will be saved through our good works. The fatality of this approach lies in self-justification, which hinders our salvation.

Or in the denial of the inspiration of Scripture and Tradition. Or into serenity. Or in many other currents that flooded the Western Churches.

The antidote to the distortion of church life is fidelity to the hesychast tradition. Its main content is the desire to keep the mind in sobriety, so that with the help of Divine grace we can be cleansed of passions and acquire virtues opposite to them. Then we will cultivate suitable soil in our heart so that Christ can dwell in it. The Savior Himself says: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word: and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with Him.”

Nowadays, some monks write theological works. But this is not an ordinary and even more important thing for a monk, as St. John of the Ladder clearly points out: we (monks) will be judged not for not theologizing or missionary work, but for not weeping over our sins. The business of a monk is repentance.

The general atmosphere in the monastery should be hesychast. If silence and a repentant spirit reign in the monastery, then the pilgrims visiting the monastery, through participation in divine services and contemplation of the ascetic life of the brethren, will be able to receive real spiritual benefit and understand the true meaning of life.

- Father Luke, how necessary is the creation of the Jesus Prayer for the laity?

The great Russian elders of the 18th-19th centuries persistently urged the laity to create intellectual prayer and immerse themselves in the hesychast type of ascetic life.

In modern Greece, many lay people also say the Jesus Prayer, although forty years ago there was nothing of the kind. In turning Christians to the hesychast tradition, the merit of Mount Athos is undeniable.

The spiritual life of Greece in the first half of the 20th century was under undoubted Western influence, and the first ascetic who broke this spiritual captivity was St. Nektarios of Aegina (Pentapolis). He clearly showed the meaning of the Jesus Prayer and the hesychast tradition.

In Russia, in my opinion, the dominance of atheistic ideology contributed to the break with the spiritual tradition of hesychasm. The connection with the living patristic heritage of the 19th century was lost. But I hope that with the help of God, the laity will again be able to touch the amazing beauty of the spiritual tradition of hesychasm. Restore connection with the legacy of Sergius of Radonezh and Paisius Velichkovsky.

In fact, the creation of the Jesus Prayer for the laity is a simple matter. Wherever they are and whatever they do, they can repeat the words "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner." Every day they face many problems and difficulties. If during each trial at least several times they turn to the Lord, their whole day will be filled with prayer. Parents can pray for their children. Children for academic excellence. Young for the older generation. All together for our Fatherland. There are many reasons to pray!

In the 17th chapter of the Apocalypse of John the Theologian - the key to the Legend of the Grand Inquisitor. This chapter is about the seduction of the harlot of Babylon, who participates in the corruption of the world; she reigns and sins with all the kings of the earth, closing the sky from people, plunging them into physical and spiritual lust.

But there will be a Judgment on the representatives of the Babylonian doctrine who are trying to manage history without God and the Son of God.

“And one of the seven angels, having seven bowls, came and, speaking to me, said to me: Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot sitting on many waters; the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the inhabitants of the earth became drunk with the wine of her fornication. "(open XVII, 1-2).

The deepest crime against Love takes place not in the realm of the flesh, but in the spirit. People are called to give their immortal heart to God. But, falling into spiritual adultery, they give their hearts only to earthly values, material tasks and interests. The rulers of peoples "commit adultery" in this way, infecting their countries with pride of autonomy from moral laws, independence from the Creator.

“And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns,” says the seer John the Theologian (Rev. XVII, 3). "Seven heads" are the seven deadly sins, and "ten horns" is an indication that the apocalyptic beast fights against the 10 commandments of God and gores them...

“The beast that you saw,” says the Revelation of St. John the Theologian, “was, and is not, and will come out of the abyss and go to destruction; and those who live on earth will be surprised, whose names are not inscribed in the Book of Life from the beginning of the world, seeing that the beast was, and is not, and will appear" (Rev. XVII, 8).

Those who "wonder" should stop being surprised at the temporal power of iniquity, accepting the words of Christ that He will be the last conqueror of all.

The Grand Inquisitor is the advocate of "Babylon", opposition to the Creator. The "Babylonian" spirit is trying in different ways to capture humanity in [different periods] of history.

Only by the Name of Christ, the Divine-human, can one be protected from evil. Only a person taught by Christ is able to notice his lie and the lie of the life around him and pierce the lie with a sharp spiritual look (the Inquisitor felt this look on himself when he spoke before Christ)...

"The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor" is not only philosophically, but also literary and formally the most difficult part of the novel "The Brothers Karamazov". In addition to its religious depth, it is also difficult because it conveys content from three levels: Dostoevsky speaks, Ivan Karamazov speaks, and the Grand Inquisitor speaks.

"The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor" is a revelation in a special aspect of the novel "Demons".

In the person of the Inquisitor, Dostoevsky brought out the same spirit that he showed in the nightmare of Ivan Karamazov. But if in Ivan's nightmare there is a "gentleman in a shabby jacket", here a majestic cardinal is shown, in which ascetic strictness towards himself is combined with the pathos of an organizer of forced universal happiness.

Everything the Grand Inquisitor says
sharply opposed to the words of Christ,
and from this opposition
the truth of Christ becomes even more expressive.

Let's listen to the "Legend" in order to understand Dostoevsky, and.

References to precedents: "Walking of the Virgin through torments"

: - After all, here it is impossible without a preface, that is, without a literary preface, ugh! - Ivan laughed, - and what a writer I am! You see, my action takes place in the 16th century, and then - you, however, this should be known even from the classes - then it was just the custom to bring heavenly forces to the ground in poetic works. I'm not talking about Dante. In France, judicial clerks, as well as monks in monasteries, gave whole performances in which they brought the Madonna, angels, saints, Christ and God himself onto the stage. Then it was all very simple. In “Notre Dame de Paris” (“Notre Dame Cathedral”), Victor Hugo, in honor of the birth of the French Dauphin, in Paris, under Louis XI, in the hall of the town hall, an edifying and gift performance is given to the people called: “Le bon jugement de la très sainte et gracieuse Vierge Marie" ("The Merciful Judgment of the Blessed and Merciful Virgin Mary"), where she herself appears in person and pronounces her bon jugement (merciful judgment).

Here in Moscow, in pre-Petrine times, the same almost dramatic performances, especially from the Old Testament, also took place from time to time; but, in addition to dramatic performances, many stories and “poems” circulated around the world at that time, in which saints, angels and all the power of heaven acted as needed. In our monasteries, they were also engaged in translations, copying and even composing such poems, and even when - to the Tatar region.

There is, for example, one monastic poem (of course, from Greek): "Walk of the Virgin through the torments", with pictures and with a boldness no less than Dante's. The Mother of God visits hell, and Archangel Michael guides Her “through the torments”. She sees sinners and their torment. There is, by the way, one fascinating category of sinners in the burning lake: which of them plunge into this lake so that they can no longer swim out, then “God already forgets them”- an expression of extreme depth and power. And so, the stricken and weeping Mother of God falls before the throne of God and asks for mercy for everyone in hell, for everyone whom She saw there, without distinction. Her conversation with God is colossally interesting. She pleads, She does not leave, and when God points to Her nailed hands and feet of Her Son and asks: how will I forgive His tormentors, She tells all the saints, all the martyrs, all the angels and archangels to fall with Her and pray for mercy all without discrimination. She ends up begging God to stop the torment for every year from Good Friday to Trinity Day, and sinners from hell immediately thank the Lord and cry out to Him: “You are right, Lord, that you judged so”.

Well, my poem would have been of the same kind if it had appeared at that time. He appears on my stage; True, He does not say anything in the poem, but only appears and passes.

On the aspirations of believing humanity for the Second Coming of Christ

Fifteen centuries have already passed since He promised to come in His Kingdom, fifteen centuries since His prophet ( John the Evangelist in the Apocalypse) wrote: "Behold, I am coming soon"(Rev. 22:12).

“Even the Son does not know about this day and hour, only my Heavenly Father” ( “But no one knows about that day and hour, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” Mk.13.32 ), as He himself spoke while still on earth. But humanity is waiting for Him with the same faith and with the same compunction. Oh, with even more faith, for fifteen centuries have already passed since the pledges from Heaven to man ceased:

Believe what your heart says
No pledges from Heaven

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - No, they have not “stopped”, but only a pure heart is a screen of “heavenly” pledges. And the pledges of the heart are even more convincing than the pledges of external phenomena)

And only one only faith in what is said by the heart!

True, there were many miracles then. There were saints who performed miraculous healings; to other righteous people, according to their biographies, the Queen of Heaven herself descended. But the devil does not sleep, and doubts about the veracity of these miracles have already begun in humanity. Just then, in the north, in Germany, a terrible new heresy appeared. A huge star, “like a lamp” (that is, [like] a Church) “fell on the fountains of waters, and they became bitter.” These heresies began to blasphemously deny miracles.

But those who remain faithful believe all the more fervently. The tears of mankind still ascend to Him, they wait for Him, they love Him, they hope in Him, they long to suffer and die for Him, as before.

And for so many centuries humanity has been praying with faith and flame: “God, Lord, appear to us” ( from Psalm 117: "God is the Lord and appear to us", which in Russian: "God - the Lord (is) and (He) shone us -". The greatest Russian writer (more precisely, the character Ivan Karamazov) showed here a misunderstanding of the Church Slavonic language of the Psalms), so many centuries called out to Him that He, in His immeasurable compassion, desired to condescend to those who pray. He condescended, visited other righteous people, martyrs and holy hermits before that while still on earth, as it is written in their “lives”. We have [Fyodor Ivanovich] Tyutchev who deeply believed in the truth of these words, announced that:

Dejected by the burden of the godmother
All of you, dear land,
In a slavish form, the King of Heaven
came out blessing

That certainly was the case, I'll tell you that.

Ivan Karamazov begins his "The Poem of the Grand Inquisitor"

And so He desired to appear at least for a moment to the people - to the tormented, suffering, stinkingly sinful, but childishly loving people. My action is in Spain, in Seville, at the most terrible time of the Inquisition, when for the glory of God bonfires were burning in the country every day and

In magnificent auto-da-fé
Burned evil heretics

Oh, this, of course, was not the Descent in which He, according to His promise, will appear at the end of time in all the glory of Heaven and which will be sudden, “like lightning flashing from east to west” (see Mt 24:27- 31).

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Here the lightning of Dostoevsky's own thought cuts through the narrative, and later, in the most spiritually critical moments, his thought rises up in the midst of the story and illuminates the thought of Ivan Karamazov and the Inquisitor. Dostoevsky himself sometimes speaks through the Inquisitor, his bright thought takes off, love for God and all the depth of this love ...
But then the evil spirit generously squanders its dreams and slyness. This does not contradict artistic truth; even though he hates her. He is especially constrained if he stands before Christ...
So, it's not about the Second Coming of Christ...)

No, He desired to visit His children, even for a moment, and exactly where the fires of the heretics crackled. By His immeasurable mercy, He once again passes among people in the same human form in which He walked among people for three years fifteen centuries ago. He condescends to the “hot hailstones” of the southern city, just in which, just the day before, in the “magnificent auto-da-fé”, in the presence of the king, court, knights, cardinals and the most charming court ladies, with the large population of all of Seville, was burned by the cardinal grand inquisitor just a little not a whole hundred heretics ad majorem gloriam Dei (to the greater glory of the Lord - lat).

He appears quietly, imperceptibly, and now everyone - this is strange - recognizes Him ...

He appears quietly, imperceptibly, and now everyone - strange it is - recognizes Him. This could be one of the best places in the poem, that is, why exactly do they recognize Him. The people, with invincible strength, strive for him, surround him, grow around him, follow him. He silently passes among them with a quiet smile of infinite compassion. The sun of love burns in His heart, the rays of Light, Enlightenment and Power flow from His eyes and, pouring out on people, shake their hearts with reciprocal love. He stretches out his hands to them, blesses them, and from touching him, even only His clothes, healing power comes.

Here an old man, blind from childhood, exclaims from the crowd: "Lord, heal me, and I will see You," and it is as if the scales come off his eyes, and the blind man sees Him. The people weep and kiss the ground where He walks. Children throw flowers before Him, sing and cry out to Him: "Hosanna!" "This is He, this is He Himself, everyone repeats, - this must be He, this is no one like Him."

He stops on the porch of the Seville Cathedral at the very moment when a children's open white coffin is brought into the temple with weeping: in it is a seven-year-old girl, the only daughter of a noble citizen. The dead child lies covered in flowers. "He will resurrect your child," cry from the crowd crying mother. The cathedral priest, who came out to meet the coffin, looks in bewilderment and frowns his brows.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - False shepherds do not like true miracles, miracles of God's Love, being ready to create false shrines and miracles. Dostoevsky penetrates into essence of clericalism)

But then the cry of the mother of the dead child is heard. She throws herself at His feet: “If it is You, then raise my child!” she exclaims, stretching out her arms to Him. The procession stops, the coffin is lowered onto the porch at His feet. He looks with compassion, and his lips quietly and once again pronounce: "Talifa kumi" - "and the maiden rises." The girl rises in her coffin, sits down and looks around, smiling, with surprised open eyes. In her hands is a bouquet of white roses, with which she lay in a coffin.

Grand Inquisitor - in his old, coarse monastic cassock

There is confusion among the people, screams, sobs, and now, at this very moment, the cardinal himself suddenly passes by the cathedral on the square. grand inquisitor. This is a ninety-year-old almost old man, tall and straight, with a withered face, with sunken eyes, but from which a sparkle still shines like a fiery spark.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Dostoevsky brought the Grand Inquisitor not as a certain social - or church - type, but as soul of this world, which can appear both in a cardinal's robe and in coarse clothes, can act in different eras and societies ... This spirit can put on a cardinal's clothes as easily as a shabby jacket)

Oh, he is not in his magnificent cardinal robes, in which he showed off before the people yesterday, when the enemies of the Roman faith were burned - no, at this moment he is only in his old, coarse monastic cassock. He is followed at a certain distance by his gloomy helpers and servants, and by the "sacred" guards. He stops in front of the crowd and watches from a distance.

He saw everything, he saw how the coffin was placed at His feet, he saw how the maiden was resurrected, and.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - A brilliant expression of the essence of clericalism: passing not through a servant of the Church)

He frowns his gray thick eyebrows, and his eyes sparkle with an ominous fire. He stretches out his finger and tells the guards to take him. And so, such is his strength, and the people are already accustomed, submissive and tremulously obedient to him, that the crowd immediately moves apart before the guards, and they, in the midst of a deathly silence that has suddenly come, lay hands on Him and lead Him away. The crowd instantly, all as one person, bows their heads to the ground before the elder inquisitor, he silently blesses the people and passes by.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - an image of herd, obedience not to the truth, but to an abstract authority that keeps order)

This business cost us dearly. Why did you come to disturb us?

The guards lead the Captive to a cramped and gloomy vaulted prison in the ancient building of the holy court and lock him in it. The day passes, the dark, hot and "breathless" Seville night comes. The air "smells of laurel and lemon." In the midst of deep darkness, the iron door of the prison suddenly opens, and the old Grand Inquisitor himself, with a lamp in his hand, slowly enters the prison. He is alone, the door is immediately locked behind him. He stops at the entrance and for a long time, a minute or two, peers into His face. Finally, he comes quietly, puts the lamp on the table and says to Him: “Is that you? You? - But, not receiving an answer, he quickly adds: - Do not answer, be silent. And what could you say? I know too well what You will say. Yes, You have no right to add anything to what You have already said before. Why did you come to disturb us? For You have come to disturb us, and You know it Yourself. But do you know what will happen tomorrow? I don’t know who You are, and I don’t want to know: Is it You or only His likeness, but tomorrow I will condemn and burn You at the stake, as the worst of heretics,

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Evil trembles, fears the Truth of Christ, its very shadow, for even the shadow of Truth has the power of healing. Not only Christ himself is dangerous to evil, but also the person in whom Christ lives. The monologue of the Grand Inquisitor is pronounced before every believer.
Lies thicken as the spirit of evil speaks them. But this lie is illuminated by the light of Christ, which reveals this lie...
Just as Satan, in the desert, tempting the Lord, only revealed his evil and denounced himself before the world, so the words of the Grand Inquisitor (Alyosha Karamazov realized this later) are "Hymn to Christ".
And every self-exposing of untruth in the world, its self-denunciation, is, in essence, a hymn to God)

and the very people who today kissed Your feet, tomorrow, at one of my gestures, will rush to rake coals to your fire, do you know this? Yes, you may know that,” he added in penetrating thought, not for a moment taking his eyes off his Captive.

: - I do not quite understand, Ivan, what is it? - Alyosha, who silently listened all the time, smiled, - is it just a boundless fantasy or some kind of old man’s mistake, some impossible qui pro quo (misunderstanding, confusion, one instead of the other - lat)

: - Take at least the last, - Ivan laughed, - if modern realism spoiled you so much and you can’t stand anything fantastic - if you want qui pro quo, then so be it. It's true, - he laughed again, - the old man is ninety years old, and he could have gone crazy on his idea for a long time. The prisoner could strike him with his appearance. It could, finally, be just nonsense, a vision of a ninety-year-old man before his death, and even heated up by yesterday's auto-da-fe of a hundred burnt heretics. But is it all the same to you and me, what is qui pro quo, what is a boundless fantasy? The only point here is that the old man needs to speak out, that at last for all ninety years he speaks out and says aloud what he has been silent about for all ninety years.

: - Is the Prisoner also silent? Looking at him and not saying a word?
: - Yes, it should be so in all cases, even, - Ivan laughed again. - The old man himself remarks to him that He has no right to add anything to what has already been said before.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Ivan's laughter is not good. Of course, it's not true that "in all cases" - "The prisoner is silent." Even when Truth, bound by human lies, is silent, its silence is sharper than any word)

If you want, this is the most, in my opinion at least: “everything, they say, was handed over by you to dad, and everything, therefore, is now with dad, and even though you don’t come now at all, don’t interfere until the time at least”. In this sense, they not only speak, but also write, the Jesuits at least. I myself read this from their theologians.

« Do You have the right to tell us even one of the secrets of the world from which You came?- my old man asks him and answers for him himself, - no, you don’t, so as not to add to what has already been said before, and so as not to deprive people of the freedom for which you so stood when you were on earth. Everything that You proclaim again will encroach on the freedom of faith of people, for it will appear as a miracle, and the freedom of their faith was dearest to You even then, fifteen hundred years ago. Didn't you say so often then: "I want to make you free" (And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free. John 8:32).

Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): Inquisitor reveals maps of spiritual evil in the world

Church teaching (both Orthodox and Roman Catholic) is based on Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition.

Sacred Tradition is not "tradition" in the secular sense, but the living experience of the Church in all her ages. Holy Scripture is understandable only through life in Christ. Tradition is transmission Fire of the Holy Spirit.

If Christ can be in every sick, poor, suffering, imprisoned and hungry person who asks for a piece of bread, if the Lord Himself identifies Himself with all strangers, sick and imprisoned people, then how much more is He Himself - in His saints, evangelizers, bearers Spirit of Truth, teachers of the Church.

To claim that for 15 centuries there was no "news from Heaven" is to claim a lie... The Inquisitor, so to speak, "opens the maps of spiritual evil in the world":

  1. The first card of evil is hatred for Christianity and especially for Christ, the Absolute of truth incarnate;
  2. the second card is his forgery, the assertion that the truth of Christ is “non-life”, “unreal”, that one can only, at best, admire it, but cannot live it.
  3. The third card of evil is pride, the assertion that the teachings of Christ are, but only he, some other, "wise spirit", takes care of weak people and can allegedly console and save humanity from freedom in Christ that is beyond their strength.

All social mirages of humanity have been and are built on this dialectic. The soul of man recoils from naked evil; . This deception is revealed by Dostoevsky. Dostoevsky defends Christ's immeasurable freedom of Love conquering evil.

But now you have seen these "free" people, - the old man suddenly adds with a thoughtful smile. “Yes, this business cost us dearly,” he continues, looking sternly at Him, “but we finally finished this business. For fifteen centuries we have suffered with this freedom, but now it is over, and over hard.

Don't you believe it's over?
Do you look at me meekly and do not honor me even with indignation?
But know that now and precisely now these people are more confident than ever
that are completely free
meanwhile, they themselves brought us their freedom and humbly laid it at our feet.
But we did it, but is that what You wanted, is this freedom?

: - I don't understand again, - Alyosha interrupted, - is he ironic, laughing?

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Alyosha, pure in heart, cannot understand this demonic pride)

: - Nothing. It is precisely he who credits himself and his people that at last they have overcome freedom and have done so in order to make people happy.

“For now only (that is, he, of course, speaks of the Inquisition) has it become possible to think for the first time about the happiness of people. The man was arranged to be a rebel; can rebels be happy? You were warned, he tells Him, You did not lack warnings and directions, but You did not heed the warnings,

Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Again, the sting of slander against God and His universe ... Man was created by God, like a son, with the gift of a wonderful freedom - to be with God, with the Father to be in the Spirit of the Father. Not out of necessity, but freely to be with God, this is the essence of the Lord's prayer "Our Father". But the rebellious Ivan says that "man is created by a rebel."
!

Here is the limit of the rebellion of God, the idea that plays in the brains of many people in the world is brought to an end, that they, people, are not guilty of their evil and man is "created a rebel", which means he is not guilty, not sinful of anything and ... - guilt is not On him…
Such is the dialectic of evil; Ivan hung on her hook. A lot of people are hooked in every generation of the earth.

The moral value and responsibility of one's freedom

The spirit of Ivan the Inquisitor proudly says:

You rejected the only way that could make people happy, but, fortunately, when you left, you left the matter to us.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - The Savior warned mankind that the “prince of this world”, the spirit of evil, is operating in this world. And now, this spirit that has come, wants to assure us that the Lord has transferred all control of the world to him!)

You promised, You affirmed with Your word, You gave us the right to bind and untie, and, of course, You cannot even think of taking this right away from us now. Why did you come to disturb us?”

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Christ's word, spoken to the apostles, that they have the right to "bind" and "loose" is demonically perverted. Can they do this with their own, human strength? No - only by the Holy Spirit. "Receive the Spirit Holy ... "(John XX, 22) ...

Ivan, separating humanity from God, wants to convince that God Himself has left humanity the freedom of "separation from God." But the Lord left people the freedom to unite with Him, and not to separate from Him! Separation from the Spirit of God (which is in our will) is the greatest slavery of man and death. And those who choose instead of Christ, his adversary, fall into this slavery and death.

If a person in himself has the power to “bind” and “loose” everything morally (as Friedrich Nietzsche wanted), then, of course. The Creator will "interfere" with him ("why did You come to interfere with us", etc.))

: - And what does it mean: had no lack of warning and guidance? Alyosha asked.
: - And this is the main thing that the old man needs to express ...

Three temptations of Christ from the mighty spirit of the underworld - three great questions

“A terrible and intelligent spirit, the spirit of self-destruction and non-existence,” the old man continues, “a great spirit spoke to you in the desert,

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Here again the lie of the Inquisitor: "terrible and intelligent spirit." Not smart and not terrible, but the spirit of self-destruction and non-existence. This is an empty and low spirit. There is no reason to "Byronize" him.
Dostoevsky wants people to understand that there is no middle ground between Christ and the spirit of evil. If a person has not accepted the Word of the Gospel as the truth and the greatest power of life, he will submit to that illusory truth that is included in many human teachings, which is also the social theory of the Grand Inquisitor, which is so reminiscent of the inhuman totalitarianism known to us. The depth of the lie is revealed in the thought that it is possible to give happiness to mankind only by "correcting" the Gospel, adapting the truth to human weakness)

and we are told in the books that he allegedly “tempted” you. Is it so? And could anything be more true than what he announced to You in three matters, and what You rejected, and what the books call “temptations”?

Meanwhile, if ever a real thunderous miracle was performed on earth, it was on that day, on the day of these three temptations. It was in the appearance of these three questions that the miracle lay. If it were possible to think, just for a test and as an example, that these three questions of a terrible spirit are completely lost in books and that they need to be restored, re-invented and composed in order to be included again in books, and for this to gather all the wise men of the earth - the rulers, high priests, scientists, philosophers, poets - and give them a task: think up, compose three questions, but such that not only would correspond to the size of the event, but would also express, in addition, in three words, in only three human phrases, the whole the future history of the world and mankind, do you think that all the wisdom of the earth, united together, could come up with at least something similar in strength and depth to the three questions that were really offered to you then by the mighty and intelligent spirit in the wilderness? By these questions alone, only by the miracle of their appearance, one can understand that one is dealing not with the human current mind, but with the eternal and absolute.

For in these three questions, as it were, all further human history is combined and predicted, and three images are revealed in which all the insoluble historical contradictions of human nature on the whole earth will converge. At that time it could not yet be seen so clearly, for the future was unknown, but now, when fifteen centuries have passed, we see that everything in these three questions has been so guessed and predicted and justified so much that nothing can be added to or subtracted from them. no more.

Decide for yourself who was right: You or the one who then questioned You?

1st temptation of Christ: BREAD - there is no crime and sin, there are hungry

Remember the first question; although not literally, but its meaning is the same: “You want to go into the world and you go with bare hands, with some kind of vow of freedom, which they, in their simplicity and in their inborn outrage, cannot comprehend, which they fear and they are afraid - for nothing has ever been more unbearable for a person and for human society than freedom!

Do you see these stones in this naked hot desert? Turn them into loaves, and humanity will run after you like a herd, grateful and obedient, though forever trembling that you will take away your hand and your bread will cease for them.” But You did not want to deprive a person of freedom and rejected the offer, for what kind of freedom, You reasoned, if obedience is bought with bread? You objected that a person does not live by bread alone, but do you know that in the name of this very earthly bread, the spirit of the earth will rise up against You and fight with You and defeat You, and everyone will follow him, exclaiming: “Who is like this beast? he gave us fire from heaven!”

Do you know that centuries will pass, and humanity will proclaim through the mouths of its wisdom and science that there is no crime, and therefore there is no sin, but only the hungry. “Feed, then ask them for virtue!” - this is what they will write on the banner that will be raised against you and with which your temple will be destroyed. A new building will be erected in the place of Your Temple, the terrible Tower of Babel will be erected again, and although this one will not be completed, like the previous one, you could still avoid this new tower and reduce the suffering of people for a thousand years,

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Here again Dostoevsky's "lightning" shines: "And although this one will not be completed, like the previous one, you could still avoid ..."

The Inquisitor is the builder of spiritual Babylon; and he also testifies to the truth that this tower "will not be completed," i.e. doomed to fail. (It so happens that the demons themselves cannot hide the truth when they stand before Christ)

for they will come to us, having suffered for a thousand years with their tower! Then they will find us again underground, in the catacombs hiding (for we will be persecuted and tormented again), they will find us and cry out to us: “Feed us, for those who promised us fire from heaven did not give it.” And then we will complete their tower, for the one who feeds will complete the construction, and only we will feed, in Your name, and lie, that in Your name.

Oh, never, never without us will they feed themselves! No science will give them bread as long as they remain free, but they will end up bringing their freedom at our feet and saying to us: "It is better to enslave us, but feed us." They will finally understand for themselves that freedom and earthly bread enough for everyone together are unthinkable, for they will never, never be able to share among themselves! They will also be convinced that they can never be free either, because rebels are also weak, vicious, insignificant.

You promised them Heavenly Bread, but, I repeat again, can it be compared in the eyes of a weak, eternally vicious and eternally ignoble human tribe with an earthly one? And if thousands and tens of thousands follow You in the name of Heavenly bread, what will become of the millions and tens of thousands of millions of beings who are unable to neglect earthly bread for Heavenly? Or are only tens of thousands of the great and strong dear to you, and the remaining millions, as numerous as the sand of the sea, weak, but loving you, should only serve as material for the great and strong?

No, the weak are also dear to us. They are vicious and rebellious, but in the end they will also become obedient. They will marvel at us and regard us as gods because, having become their head, we agreed to endure freedom and rule over them - it will be so terrible for them to be free in the end! But we will say that we are obedient to You and rule in Your name. We will deceive them again, for we will not let you in. In this deceit lies our suffering, for we will have to lie. This is what that first question in the wilderness meant, and this is what You rejected in the name of freedom, which You placed above all. And yet in this question lay the great mystery of this world. By accepting “bread”, You would have answered the universal and eternal human anguish of both an individual being and the whole of humanity together - this is: “before whom to bow?”

Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): The power of God is made perfect in weakness...

"No, the weak are also dear to us," the Inquisitor says demagogically; he believes that weak people are “vicious and rebellious, but in the end they will become obedient. They will marvel at us and consider us gods because, having become their head, we agreed to endure the freedom that they were afraid of, and over them to rule, it will be so terrible for them to be free in the end!"

Such is Dostoevsky's clear insight into the totalitarian doctrine. We are the contemporaries of these "infallible" collectives and individuals who take away freedom from people, supposedly for their benefit. The inquisitors do not know what the real freedom of the people is; they are blind and pawns of evil, but they think they are made to dominate the masses.

The legend of the Grand Inquisitor is an artistically completed image of the art of lying. Dostoevsky brought into focus all the objections against God and the work of Christ in the world and revealed this in the Legend.

One of the central points of dialectics and evil is that it can be more merciful to people than the Creator Himself. All modern world social temptations are based on the same demagogy, supposedly love for humanity, on the desire to protect humanity from Christ" (from the "too high" ideal).

"He demanded too much from mankind" - such is the reproach of evil to Christ. "Respecting him less, I would have demanded less from him, and this would have been closer to love, for it would have been easier to bear it" (see quote below in the text). Such is the demagogy of the Inquisitor.

“What is the fault of a weak soul,” says the Inquisitor (see quote below), “that it is unable to contain such terrible gifts?” …But it is precisely the weak soul that has realized itself as weak that is the only one capable of containing God's gifts.

The greatness of God's gifts lies precisely in the fact that they enter by their power precisely into a weak, impoverished (not imagining themselves strong) soul.. Grace is not looking for heroes, not titans and prometheans, but "poor in spirit", trustingly-childish heart ...

The Inquisitor cannot understand this, does not want to; his thought is entirely occupied with earthly things.

Speaking of the inquisitorial care for the weak, Dostoevsky undoubtedly means, perhaps, that which existed in the Roman Church in the Middle Ages, and even now has not completely left Roman ecclesiastical legal psychology and practice ( but came into the practice of the ROC - ed.).

Here again is the question of moral pedagogy. What is easier for a person when he "make it easy to be weak"(giving something external for salvation), or, they are attracted to the highest, perfect, they keep before him all the time the bright Light of Christ, pointing to the last commandment: "be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect" ...

The Gospel holds the highest Light before man, prompting him to follow the Light to the end. Here is the "difficulty" of the Gospel for many who want to dilute it, to replace it. Seeing before itself the fullness of Divine truth, purity, Love, the perfection of reason, will and feelings, the human soul is called to realize (this is the pedagogy of the Gospel) its insignificance without God, without His Spirit. The soul must cease to be self-satisfied, become "poor in spirit"; having become morally poor before God, she receives the Grace of God's power and is adopted, she goes, drawn, lifted up by God's power ...

Here is the basis of the true, religious content of life and perfection. Not by weakening, not obscuring the commandments of God, the moral salvation of man is facilitated, but, on the contrary, by revealing the height of God's perfection in the world.

Of course, it happens that a person, being selfish and proud, seeing the infinite moral Light before him and feeling that he cannot become a saint on his own, refuses the Gospel, considers it "unreal", "impossible", etc...

But realizing that "The power of God is made perfect in weakness", are not afraid of the last Truth, they consider only this last Light to be the real reality.

The community of idols: by all means bow down to everyone together and equally

There is no more continuous and painful concern for a person than, remaining free, to quickly find someone to bow before. But a person seeks to bow before that which is already indisputable, so indisputable that all people at once agree to the general admiration before him. For the concern of these miserable creatures is not only to find something before which I or another bow down, but to find something so that everyone will believe in it and bow before it, and so that without fail together . This is the need commonality worship is the main torment of each person individually and as a whole humanity from the beginning of time. Because of the universal admiration, they exterminated each other with a sword. They created gods and called to each other: “Drop your gods and come to worship ours, or death to you and your gods!”

And so it will be until the end of the world, even when the gods also disappear in the world: they will still fall before idols. You knew, You could not help but know this basic secret of human nature, but You rejected the only absolute banner that was offered to You in order to make everyone bow before You unquestioningly - the banner of earthly bread, and rejected it in the name of freedom and Heavenly Bread.

Conscience is more important than bread - A person must have an idea why he should live

Look what you have done next. And all again in the name of freedom! I tell you that there is no more painful concern for a person than to find someone to whom to transfer as soon as possible the gift of freedom with which this unfortunate creature is born. But only the one who calms their conscience seizes the freedom of people. With bread, You were given an indisputable banner: give bread, and a man will bow down, for there is nothing more indisputable than bread, but if at the same time someone else takes possession of his conscience besides You - oh, then he will even throw down Your bread and follow the one who deceives his conscience. In this you were right. For the secret of human existence is not only to live, but to. Without a firm idea of what he should live for, a person will not agree to live and will sooner destroy himself than remain on earth, even if all around him were bread.

This is true, but what happened: instead of taking possession of the freedom of people, You increased it for them even more! Or have you forgotten that peace and even death is more precious to a person than free choice in the knowledge of good and evil?

There is nothing more seductive for a person than the freedom of his conscience, but there is nothing more painful. And now, instead of solid foundations to calm the human conscience once and for all - You took everything that is extraordinary, conjectural and indefinite, you took everything that was beyond the strength of people, and therefore acted as if not loving them at all - and who is this : The one who came to give his life for them! Instead of taking possession of human freedom, You multiplied it and burdened the spiritual realm of man with its torments forever. You desired the free love of man, so that he would freely follow You, deceived and captivated by You.

Instead of a firm ancient law - with a free heart a person should henceforth decide for himself what is good and what is evil, having only Your image before him as a guide - but did You not think that he would finally reject and dispute even Your image and Your Truth if he is oppressed by such a terrible burden as freedom of choice? They will finally exclaim that the truth is not in You, for it was impossible to leave them in confusion and torment more than You did, leaving them so many worries and unsolvable tasks. Thus, you yourself laid the foundation for the destruction of your own Kingdom and do not blame anyone else for this. In the meantime, was it offered to You? There are three forces, the only three forces on earth that can forever conquer and captivate the conscience of these weak rebels, for their happiness, these forces: miracle, mystery and authority.

2nd temptation of Christ: MIRACLE - a weak person does not seek God, but miracles

You rejected both, and the other, and the third, and You yourself set an example for this. When a terrible and wise spirit placed You on top of the temple and said to You: “If you want to know whether you are the son of God, then climb down, for it is said that the angels will pick up and carry Him, and will not fall and will not be hurt, and then you will know whether you are a son of God, and then you will prove what your faith is in your Father.” But You, having heard, rejected the offer and did not give in and did not rush down. Oh, of course, You acted here proudly and magnificently, like God, but people, but a weak rebellious tribe - are they gods? Oh, You understood then that, having taken only a step, only a movement to rush down, You would immediately have tempted the Lord, and lost all faith in Him, and would have broken on the ground that you came to save, and the intelligent spirit that tempted You would have rejoiced. But, I repeat, are there many like you? And could You really admit even for a minute that people would be under the power of such a temptation?

Is human nature created in such a way as to reject a miracle and in such terrible moments of life, moments of the most terrible fundamental and painful spiritual questions, remain only with the free decision of the heart? Oh, You knew that Your feat would be preserved in books, reach the depths of time and the last limits of the earth, and hoped that, following You, a person would remain with God, not needing a miracle.

But You did not know that, for a person seeks not so much God as miracles. And since a person cannot remain without a miracle, he will create new miracles for himself, already his own, and will bow to the healer's miracle, the woman's witchcraft, even if he has been a rebel, a heretic and an atheist a hundred times.

You did not come down from the cross when they shouted to You, mocking and teasing you: "Come down from the cross and we will believe that it is You". You did not come down because, again, you did not want to enslave a person by a miracle and longed for a free faith, and not a miraculous one. He longed for free love, and not for the slavish delights of a slave before the power that terrified him once and for all.

But even here You judged people too highly, for, of course, they are slaves, although they were created by rebels. Look around and judge, now fifteen centuries have passed, go look at them: whom did you lift up to yourself?

I swear, man is weaker and lower created than You thought about him! Can, can he do what You do? Respecting him so much, you acted as if you ceased to sympathize with him, because you demanded too much from him - and who is it, the One who loved him more than himself! Respecting him less, I would have demanded less from him, and this would have been closer to love, for it would have been easier to bear it.

He [the man] is weak and vile.

What is it that he is now everywhere rebelling against our power and is proud that he is rebelling? This is the pride of the child and the student. These are small children who rebelled in the classroom and kicked out the teacher. But the delight of the children will come to an end, it will cost them dearly. They will overthrow the temples and bleed the earth. But foolish children will finally guess that although they are rebels, they are weak rebels, unable to withstand their own rebellion.

Shedding their stupid tears, they finally confess that Who created them as rebels, no doubt wanted to laugh at them. They will say this in despair, and what they say will be blasphemy, from which they will become even more unhappy, because in the end she herself will always avenge him.

So, restlessness, confusion and misfortune - this is the present lot of people after You suffered so much for their freedom!

yours Mystery we don't understand. Our order secret suits everyone

Your great prophet in vision and in allegory says that he saw all the participants in the first resurrection and that there were twelve thousand of them from each tribe. But if there were so many of them, then they were, as it were, not people, but gods. They endured your cross, they endured dozens of years of a hungry and naked desert, eating locusts and roots - and, of course, You can proudly point to these children of freedom, free love, their free and magnificent sacrifice in Your name. But remember that there were only a few thousand of them, and even then gods, and the rest?

And how are the rest of the weak people to blame for not being able to endure what the mighty are? What is the fault of a weak soul that is unable to contain such terrible gifts? Did You really come only to the elect and for the elect? But if so, then here Secret and we don't understand it.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - The Inquisitor tells a lie here and further that Christianity is a religion "for the elect", for "a few", and many weak people who do not understand the truth should supposedly be only "material" for the high spiritual ascetics.

In fact, those who are led by the Spirit of Christ, that is, the best Christians, are themselves "material" for many "small forces." It's the reverse of the whole Inquisitor scheme.

The Heavenly Church, evangelizers and ascetics of the spirit, is precisely God-given "material" by which all mankind is spiritually nourished, exalted and made closer to God))

And if it is a mystery, then we also had the right to preach the mystery and teach them that it is not the free decision of their hearts that is important and not love, but secret which they must obey blindly, even beyond their conscience. So we did. We have corrected Your feat and founded it on miracle, mystery And authority . And the people rejoiced that they were again led like a herd and that such a terrible gift, which had brought them so much torment, had finally been lifted from their hearts.

Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): Everything is perverted by the spirit of evil

But the lie operates in the world not through "miracle, mystery and authority", but through miraculousness, mystery and authority. Is not nothing. The concepts of wonder, mystery and authority are perverted by the Inquisitor. Everything is perverted by the spirit of evil.

The human soul is thirsty, but how to understand this thirst?

It can also be a genuine thirst for a higher world, but it can also be a search only for external phenomena of miraculousness, "signs from heaven."
- The Lord wants a person to know His truth inwardly, with a cleansed heart, and not by external phenomena, forced to submit to the truth. The miracle is not in an external sign, a fact, but in the internal knowledge of the Truth.
- The Lord did not reject the miracle, but made the whole life a miracle ...

And the Inquisitor says that only he will give the world a "miracle". He can only give false miraculousness.

Same thing with secret. Dostoevsky rightly says that, in addition to the search for miraculousness, the false-religious striving also bows before external "mystery", carnal "esotericism", not knowing God's Mystery. The Lord left His Mystery on earth in life and in the Church. But it is not revealed to everyone, but only to pure hearts. Only they can see God - not in His being (which is impossible even for angels), but in His Mysteries.

The sacraments of the Church are one of the expressions of the Mystery of human life in God. By perverting the striving of the soul for the Sacrament of real life, instead of mystery, evil gives "mystery", which is manifested in the false esotericism of modern pagan teachings, which attract with their external mystery. Christian esotericism is different from false esotericism, rooted in the revelation of Grace to a pure heart.

The same can be said about. Authority (in itself) is a positive phenomenon. Holy Scripture and the Tradition of the Church are surrounded by the authority of holiness and truth. There is the authority of Truth, the last Truth that enters the world.
But the "authority" that the Grand Inquisitor wants to introduce is rooted only in the weaknesses of people and in their ignorance.

Dostoevsky undoubtedly expressed the idea that the understanding of miracle, mystery and authority can be distorted by Christians themselves. The authority of a preacher can, for example, stand high before people only because he "graduated from three universities" or learned ten languages. Is all this a sign of Christian authority? No! Or, suppose people believe someone only because of his high rank, position or eloquence ... All this still does not correspond to the religious authority of truth. True authority is one: Spirit, Truth and Life of Christ, spirit of Christ's Church.

We were right in teaching and doing so, tell me? Have we really not loved humanity, having so humbly acknowledged its impotence, lovingly lightened its burden and permitted its feeble nature, even if it was a sin, but with our permission?

Why have you come to disturb us now? And that you silently and penetratingly look at me with your meek eyes? Get angry, I don't want Your Love, because I don't love You myself. And what should I hide from You? Or I don't know who I'm talking to? What I have to tell You, everything is already known to You, I read it in Your eyes. And will I hide our secret from You? Maybe You just want to hear it from my lips, listen, then:

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - Evil trembles before the gaze of Christ. And after this, the mask of evil itself breaks off before the silent Christ.

This is literally what happened in the world...

3rd Temptation of Christ: THE POWER OF CAESAR, the worldwide empire of good

Exactly eight centuries ago, when we took from him what You indignantly rejected, that last gift that he offered You, showing You all the kingdoms of the earth: we took from him Rome and the sword of Caesar and declared only ourselves the kings of the earth, the only kings, although we have not yet had time to bring our work to a complete conclusion. But who is to blame? Oh, the matter is still only at the beginning, but it has begun. It is still a long time to wait for its completion, and the earth will still suffer a lot, but we will achieve and be Caesars, and then we will already think about the universal happiness of people.

And meanwhile You could still then take the sword of Caesar. Why did you reject this last gift? Having accepted this third advice of a mighty spirit, You would have fulfilled everything that a person is looking for on earth, that is: before whom to bow, to whom to entrust conscience and how to finally unite everyone into an indisputable common and consensual anthill, for there is the third and last torment of people.

Mankind as a whole has always striven to settle down universally. There were many great peoples with a great history, but the higher these peoples were, the more unfortunate they were, for they were more aware of the need for the universality of uniting people. The great conquerors, Timurs and Genghis Khans, flew like a whirlwind over the earth, striving to conquer the universe, but even those, albeit unconsciously, expressed the same great need of mankind for world and universal unity. Having accepted the world and the purple of Caesar, he would have founded a world kingdom and given world peace. For who can control people if not those who control their conscience and in whose hands their bread is.

[antichrist].

We have given happiness to a riotous herd of thousands of millions of weak people

Oh, there will be centuries more of the excesses of the free mind, their science and anthropophagy, because, having begun to build their Tower of Babel without us, they will end up with anthropophagy (cannibalism, eating people). But then the beast will crawl towards us, and will lick our feet, and sprinkle them with bloody tears from its eyes. And we will sit on the beast and raise up a bowl, and it will be written on it: "Secret!" But then only and then will the kingdom of peace and happiness come for people. You are proud of your chosen ones, but you only have chosen ones, and we will reassure everyone.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - [Again a lie!] Only the Savior said truthfully: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest"…)

And is it still so: how many of these chosen ones, from the mighty ones who could have become chosen ones, finally got tired, waiting for You, and suffered and will continue to carry the strength of their spirit and the heat of their heart to another field and end up with the same for You and erected free his banner. But You yourself raised this banner [of great freedom].

With us, everyone will be happy and will no longer rebel or exterminate each other, as in your freedom, everywhere. Oh, we will convince them that they will only become free when they give up their freedom for us and submit to us. So, are we right or are we lying? They themselves will be convinced that they are right, for they will remember to what horrors of slavery and confusion Thy freedom brought them. Freedom, a free mind and science will lead them into such a jungle and put them before such miracles and insoluble mysteries that some of them, rebellious and ferocious, will destroy themselves, others, recalcitrant, but weak, will destroy each other, and the third, remaining, weak and the unfortunate ones will crawl to our feet and cry out to us:

“Yes, you were right, you alone possessed His secret,
and we return to you, save us from ourselves.”

Receiving bread from us, of course, they will clearly see that we are taking their own bread, obtained by their own hands, in order to distribute it to them, without any miracle, they will see that we have not turned stones into bread, but truly more, than the bread itself, they will be glad that they receive it from our hands! For they will remember too well that before, without us, the very loaves they got turned into stones in their hands, and when they returned to us, the very stones turned into loaves in their hands. They will appreciate too, too much, which means to submit once and for all!

And until people understand this, they will be unhappy. Who contributed most to this misunderstanding, tell me? Who broke up the flock and scattered it along unknown paths [giving people the Gospel, the Good News]?

But the herd will gather again and submit again, and once and for all. Then we will give them a quiet, humble happiness, the happiness of weak beings, as they are created. Oh, we will convince them at last not to be proud, for You lifted them up and taught them to be proud; let us prove to them that they are weak, that they are only miserable children, but that childish happiness is sweeter than anything.

They will become timid and will look at us and cling to us in fear, like chicks to a mother hen. They will be amazed and horrified at us and proud that we are so powerful and so smart that we could pacify such a violent herd of thousands of millions. They will tremble in a relaxed way with our anger, their minds will become shy, their eyes will become teary, like those of children and women, but they will just as easily pass at our beckon to fun and laughter, bright joy and a happy children's song. Yes, we will make them work, but in the hours free from labor we will arrange their life as a child's game, with children's songs, choruses, and innocent dances.

Oh, we will allow them to sin, they are weak and powerless, and they will love us like children because we will let them sin. We will tell them that every sin will be expiated if it is done with our permission; we allow them to sin because we love them, but we will take the punishment for these sins, so be it. And we will take it upon ourselves, and they will adore us as benefactors who bear their sins before God. And they will have no secrets from us. We will allow or forbid them to live with their wives and mistresses, to have or not to have children - all judging by their obedience - and they will submit to us with fun and joy. The most painful secrets of their conscience - everything, they will bear everything for us, and we will solve everything, and they will believe our decision with joy, because it will save them from great care and terrible present torments of a personal and free decision.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - The Inquisitor wants to make all people "infants" who are unaware of their sin. He proclaims himself a "redeemer" - in denial. We who know, "take upon ourselves the sins of people"; we do not we tell them that sin is a crime, and by this we make life easier for people.

Such is the limit of the aspirations of anti-Christianity and the meaning of the "redemption" of lies.
It is the communion of the soul to the final death)

We, the damned, the keepers of the secret, are the most miserable people in the world.

And everyone will be happy, all the millions of beings, except for the hundreds of thousands who control them. For only we, we who keep the secret, only we will be unhappy. There will be thousands of millions of happy babies and a hundred thousand sufferers who have taken upon themselves the curse of the knowledge of good and evil.

They will die quietly, fade away quietly in Your name and.
But we'll keep the secret
and for their own happiness we will beckon them with a heavenly and eternal reward.
.

They say ( reading the Apocalypse of John the Evangelist) and prophesy that you will come and conquer again, you will come with your chosen ones, with your proud and mighty ones, but we will say that they ( Christ and saints) saved only themselves, and we saved everyone. They say ( reading the Revelation of John the Theologian), that the harlot who sits on the beast and holds in her hands secret that the feeble ones will rebel again, that they will tear her purple and expose her “nasty” body.

But then I will get up and point you to thousands of millions of happy babies,
who knew no sin.
And we, who took their sins upon ourselves for their happiness,
we will stand before you and say:
"Judge us if you can and dare."

Know that I am not afraid of You. Know that I too was in the desert, that I also ate locusts and roots, that I also blessed the freedom with which You blessed people, and that I was preparing to become one of Your chosen ones, one of the mighty and strong with a thirst to "fill the number." But I woke up and did not want to serve madness. I returned and joined the host of those who . I left the proud and returned to the humble for the happiness of these humble.

What I say to You will come true and our kingdom will be built.
I repeat to you, tomorrow you will see this obedient flock,
which at my first wave
rush to rake hot coals to your fire,
on which I will burn you for having come to disturb us.
For if there was anyone who deserved our fire more than all, then it is You.
Tomorrow I will burn you. Dixi
(period, so I said - lat).

Ivan stopped. He got excited when he spoke, and spoke with enthusiasm; when he finished, he suddenly smiled. Alyosha, who had been listening to him in silence, and in the end, in extreme agitation, many times trying to interrupt his brother's speech, but apparently restraining himself, suddenly began to speak, as if he had taken off from his place:

: - But - this is absurdity! he cried, blushing. - Your poem is a praise to Jesus, not a blasphemy - as you wanted it to be. And who will believe you about freedom? Is that how it should be understood? Is it the concept in Orthodoxy - This is Rome, and not all of Rome, this is not true - these are the worst of Catholicism, the inquisitors, the Jesuits! ..

And there cannot be such a fantastic person as your inquisitor. What are the sins of people taken upon themselves? What kind of bearers of a secret are they who have taken upon themselves some kind of curse for the happiness of people? When are they seen? We know the Jesuits, they talk badly about them, but are they what you have? They are not at all, not at all ... They are just a Roman army for the future world earthly kingdom, with the emperor - the Roman high priest at the head - this is their ideal, but without any secrets and sublime sadness ... The simplest desire for power, earthly dirty goods, enslavement - like a future serfdom, with the fact that they will become landowners - that's all they have. They don't even believe in God. Your suffering inquisitor is a fantasy...

: - Yes, stop, stop, - Ivan laughed, - how excited you are. Fantasy, you say, let it! Of course, fantasy. But allow me, however: do you really think that all this Catholic movement of the last centuries is really only a desire for power for nothing but dirty goods? Isn't Father Paisios (the disciple and admirer of Elder Zosima) teaching you like this?

“No, no, on the contrary, Father Paissy once said something like even yours - but, of course, not that, not at all,” Alyosha suddenly realized.

: - Precious, however, information, despite yours: "not at all."

I'm asking you exactly why your Jesuits and inquisitors have copulated for nothing but material nasty benefits? Why can't there be a single sufferer among them, tormented by great sorrow and loving mankind? You see: suppose that at least one of all these people who want only material and dirty goods was found - at least one only such as my old inquisitor, who himself ate roots in the desert and raged ( rather, according to the general meaning, F.M. Dostoevsky meant - he fought demons), conquering his flesh in order to make himself free and perfect, but nevertheless, all his life he loved humanity and suddenly received his sight and saw that it is not great moral bliss to achieve perfection of the will in order to at the same time be convinced that millions of other creatures of God remained arranged only in mockery that they would never be able to cope with their freedom, that the pitiful rebels would never make giants to complete the Tower, that it was not for such geese that the great idealist (i.e. the inquisitor himself) dreamed of his harmony. Realizing all this, he returned and joined - to smart people. Couldn't this have happened?

: - To whom did you join, to what smart people? Alyosha exclaimed almost in excitement. - They have no such mind and no such secrets and secrets - Only godlessness, that's their whole secret.

Your inquisitor does not believe in God, that's his whole secret!

: - Even so! Finally you figured it out. And really, really, this is the whole secret, but isn't it suffering, at least for a person like him, who?

There were and are two kinds of such inquisitors: Catholics and Freemasons

At the end of his days, he is clearly convinced that only the advice of a great terrible spirit could at least somehow arrange weak rebels in a tolerable order, "half-finished trial creatures created in mockery". And now, having convinced himself of this, he sees that he must follow the instructions of a clever spirit, a terrible spirit of death and destruction, and in order to accept lies and deceit and lead people already consciously to death and destruction, and, moreover, deceive them all the way, so that they somehow they did not notice where they were being led, so that at least on the road these pitiful blind men would consider themselves happy.

And mind you, deceit in the name of Him, in whose ideal the old man so passionately believed all his life! Isn't that bad luck? And if at least one such person found himself at the head of this entire army, “hungry for power for nothing but dirty blessings,” then is it really not enough for at least one such person to come out as a tragedy? Not only that: it is enough for one such leader to finally find the real guiding idea of the entire Roman business with all its armies and Jesuits, the highest idea of this business.

I tell you straight out that I firmly believe that this single person has never been impoverished among those who are at the head of the movement. Who knows, maybe these same things happened between the Roman high priests. Who knows, maybe this accursed old man, who so stubbornly and so in his own way loves humanity, still exists in the form of a whole host of many such single old people and not by chance at all, but exists as consent, like a secret alliance, long ago arranged to keep a secret, to keep it from the unfortunate and feeble people, in order to make them happy. It certainly is, and it must be so.

It seems to me that even they have something like this same mystery at their core, and that this is why Catholics hate Freemasons so much because they see them as competitors, a fragmentation of the unity of the idea, when there should be one flock and one shepherd ...

However, defending my thought, I have the appearance of a writer who could not stand your criticism. Enough about that.

: - You may be a Mason himself! Alyosha burst out suddenly. "You don't believe in God," he added, but this time with extreme sorrow. It seemed to him, moreover, that his brother was looking at him with mockery. How does your poem end? he suddenly asked, looking at the ground, “or is it over already?”

Christ quietly kisses the inquisitor - Alyosha also forgives Ivan

: - I wanted to end it like this:

When the inquisitor is silent, he waits for some time for his Prisoner to answer him. His silence is hard for him. He saw how the Prisoner listened to him all the time penetratingly and quietly, looking straight into his eyes and, apparently, not wanting to object to anything. The old man would like Thoth to say something to him, even bitter, terrible.

But He suddenly silently approaches the old man and quietly kisses him on his bloodless ninety-year-old lips. That's the whole answer. The old man winces. Something stirred at the ends of his lips; he goes to the door, opens it and says to him: "Go and don't come again - don't come at all - never, never!" And releases it on the "dark hailstones". The prisoner leaves...

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - The silent Christ kisses the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor releases the Captive... Some believe that in this finale the Grand Inquisitor, touched by the all-forgiving Love of the Savior, performs an act of generosity, opening the doors of the dungeon... But the Inquisitor speaks words that are painful for Christ more than the nails of Golgotha The Inquisitor says to the Son of God: "Go, go, and don't come again... don't come at all... never, never!")

: - And the old man?
: - A kiss burns on his heart, but the old man remains in the same idea.
: - And you are with him, and you? Alyosha exclaimed sadly.

Ivan laughed.

: - But this is nonsense, Alyosha, because it is only a stupid poem by a stupid student who has never written two poems. Why are you taking it so seriously? Don't you really think that I will go straight there now, to the Jesuits, in order to become in the host of people correcting his feat?

Oh God, what do I care! After all, I told you: I would only reach thirty years old, and there - a cup on the floor!

: - And sticky notes, and expensive graves, and the blue sky, and the beloved woman! How will you live, how will you love them? Alyosha exclaimed sadly. - With such a hell in the chest and in the head, is it possible? No, it is you who are going to join them - and if not, then you will kill yourself, and you will not stand it!

: - There is such a force that everything will endure! Ivan said with a cold smile.
: - What strength?
: - Karamazov - the power of meanness of Karamazov.
: - Is it to drown in debauchery, to crush the soul in corruption, yes, yes?
: - Perhaps, and this is only up to thirty years old, maybe I will avoid it, and then ...
: How can you escape? What will you avoid? It's impossible with your thoughts.
: - Again, in Karamazov's way.
: - This is to "everything is allowed"? Everything is allowed, right, right?

Ivan frowned and suddenly turned strangely pale.

: - Ah, it was you who picked up yesterday's word, which Miusov was so offended with - and why brother Dmitry [Karamazov] jumped out and spoke so naively? he chuckled wryly. - Yes, perhaps: "everything is allowed", if the word is already uttered. I do not renounce. And Mitenkin's version is not bad either.

Alyosha looked at him silently.

“When I was leaving, brother, I thought that I had at least you in the whole world,” Ivan suddenly said with an unexpected feeling, “and now I see that there is no place for me in your heart, my dear hermit. I will not renounce the formula “everything is allowed”, so what, you will renounce me for this, yes, yes?

Alyosha got up, went up to him and silently kissed him softly on the lips.

: - Literary theft! - Ivan cried, suddenly turning into some kind of delight, - you stole it from my poem! Thanks, however. Get up, Alyosha, let's go, it's time for me and you.

(Archbishop John of San Francisco (Shakhovskoy): - In the kiss of the "Legend" there is truth, and there is also a lie. Dostoevsky is in it and Ivan Karamazov is in it. this kiss is that the Lord loves all his creatures. He also loves the one who does not love Him and does not want to love. Christ came to save sinners. And humanity most of all needs for its salvation precisely this highest Christ's Love. A sick child needs the most motherly love. The kiss of Christ is the call to this Love, the last call of the Pilates, [Dvorkins] and Pharisees to repentance. This is Dostoevsky's idea.

[same:] But this kiss is also the thought of Ivan Karamazov, his last, tempting untruth merging truth and falsehood)

What the souls of Karamazov will come to - it will be clear after the age of 30 years

They left, but stopped at the porch of the inn.

: - That's what, Alyosha, - Ivan said in a firm voice, - if I really have enough for sticky notes, then I will love them, only remembering you. It is enough for me that you are here somewhere, and I will not waste my life yet. Is this enough for you? If you want, take at least a declaration of love.

And now you turn to the right, I turn to the left - and that's enough, you hear, that's enough. That is, if I hadn’t left tomorrow (it seems I’ll probably leave) and we would have met again somehow, then you won’t say a word more with me on all these topics. I urge. And as for Brother Dmitry [Karamazov], too, I especially ask you, don’t even talk to me ever again,” he added suddenly irritably, “everything has been exhausted, everything has been discussed, right?

And I, for my part, will also give you one promise for this: when by the age of thirty I want to “throw the goblet on the floor”, then, wherever you are, I will still come to talk with you again - even if only from America, you know. I will come promptly. It will be very interesting to look at you by that time: what will you be like then? You see, quite a solemn promise. But in fact, we say goodbye, maybe for seven, ten years.

Well go now to yours Pater Seraphicus because he is dying; If he dies without you, then you will probably be angry with me for keeping you. Goodbye, kiss me again, like this, and go ... ( Pater "om Seraphicus" he calls Francis of Assisi - Sankt Franziskus Seraphicus. Here we mean the Orthodox loving elder Zosima. Father Zosima and Hieromonk Paisios, who shared his mind, are the spiritual mentors of Alyosha Karamazov. Francis of Assisi is a famous holy fool who has achieved an amazing and rare love in Western Christianity for every creature: people, animals and the whole world )

Ivan suddenly turned around and went on his way, without looking back. It was like the day before Alyosha's brother Dmitri [Karamazov] left Alyosha, although yesterday it was quite different. This strange remark flashed like an arrow through Alyosha's sad mind, sad and mournful at that moment. He waited for a while, looking after his brother. For some reason, I suddenly noticed that brother Ivan was walking somehow swaying and that his right shoulder, if you look from behind, seems to be lower than the left. He had never noticed it before. But suddenly he also turned and almost ran towards the monastery. It was getting dark already, and he was almost frightened; something new was growing in him, to which he could not give an answer. The wind rose again, as yesterday, and the age-old pines murmured gloomily around him when he entered the skete forest. He almost ran. "Pater Seraphicus" - he got this name from somewhere - where? flashed Alyosha. - Ivan, poor Ivan, and when will I see you now ...

Here is the skete, Lord!
Yes, yes, it's him, it's Pater Seraphicus, he'll save me - from him and forever!

Then, with great bewilderment, he recalled several times in his life how he could suddenly, after parting with Ivan, so completely forget about his brother Dmitri [Karamazov], whom in the morning, just a few hours ago, he decided to find him without fail and not leave without moreover, at least I had not even to return to the monastery that night.
