Do you know what a mixtape is? What does mixtape mean? In general, a “mixtape” is tracks recorded in a chaotic or specific order.

0 I have long wanted to write a short article about Mixtape and what it is eaten with. This is a fresh trend that came to us, as usual, from the West. What does Mixtape mean?? I recommend reading a few interesting articles, for example, who is Retard, what does Repost mean, how to understand the word Repit, what is Regat, etc. Mixtape- this is a new trend in musical movement. For some time now, more and more Mixtape has been appearing, but some people, when faced with it, cannot understand what it is all about. This article will be very brief, since I won’t bother you with any mega details and historical facts, I’ll just give short answers to most popular questions. What is a mixtape? The word Mixtape was borrowed from the English language "Mixtape", which can be translated as a cassette with cuts musical compositions.

Mixtape- this is a cassette borrowed by a DJ that contains music or skits ( short stories prose)

Find out more about what Mix means in this detailed article.

Nowadays, few people can remember about such a storage medium as an ordinary audio cassette. However, habit is an obsessive thing, so later mixtapes began to be called CD-mix, as well as mp3-mix.

Mixtape is a selection of musical compositions of the same genre, by the same or different artists.
A mixtape is also called mixing your voice with the “minus” (music from a song)

How is a mixtape different from an album?

Albums take a very long time to make, every composition, every track is polished. Lyrics are rewritten and musical arrangements are changed, so sometimes an album can take several years.
The mixtape is released privately, so there is much more freedom of choice, since you can take any track you like, no one can stop you. In addition, on Mixtapes you can take other people's instrumentals, samples, whatever your heart desires. Therefore, you can dare “American Boy” by the group Combination to the tune of HIM and send it to the Internet for everyone to see, or you can record your masterpiece on a flash drive and let your friends listen to it.

Is the music on mixtapes stolen?

Not really. How do you even imagine a stolen track? At night, do you take a crowbar and a flashlight and go to Philip Kirkorov’s villa to steal his composition and pass it off as your own?
Similar music from songs (" stolen" minus) is sold completely legally on vinyl or discs by artists.
Why should a person who actually bought a licensed disc in a store listen to insults about how he stole this music? Some artists themselves voluntarily post “minus” (music from songs) on the Internet, and is the one who downloaded and used them a thief?
Although, of course, there are mixes that contain exclusively other people’s music, but mostly with their own compositions.

Today we will talk about such a phenomenon as a mixtape. What is this, we will consider in detail in this material. Music lovers can listen to a hit dozens of times. Moreover, they always add all the tunes to their own playlists in order to play them in a certain order. To make this task easier, professional musicians came up with a new phenomenon especially for their listeners, which will be discussed further.

A little history

So our theme is a mixtape. What it is can be answered very simply. This is a sound recording that combines several musical works. In other words, a collection of songs that have a common composition and a specific mixing style. This phenomenon appeared in the 70s of the twentieth century. At that time, there was no production of 8-track magnetic tapes. Drivers were the first to discover this method of recording sound. long distance. They were the first to mix their favorite tunes on audio cassettes. A little later, such media began to be sold in markets. This is how the mixtape came about. What did this mean for music lovers in those years? To understand this, it’s worth listening to the audio cassettes that were popular at that time: “Top 1977”, “Super 73”, “Country Chart”.

Musicians also have a different opinion about the origin of mixtapes. It is possible that this concept arose in America among professional “black” rappers. This is why audio mixing is currently the most popular genre in hip-hop.

Rap

We continue to discuss the mixtape. What does this mean for rap? The main thing is the mixing of tracks from completely different artists. In some cases, the compositions used are related to the same theme. Ownership of all tracks belongs to one artist. Sometimes a beat is read by different artists, although it belongs to a specific artist.

Album

It must be said that creating a mixtape takes little time and does not require official confirmation of copyright. This kind of work does not require a producer. There is no censorship here, the recording is simply adjusted to fit the radio broadcast. The artist has the freedom to select musical accompaniment; he chooses himself necessary tools. You can, for example, use a bard’s composition and add female vocals, mix it all with the rhythmic melody of a popular rap hit.

Let's look at the difference between a mixtape and an album. The difference between these two concepts is obvious. To record an album, a professional musician has to work long and painstakingly. He produces commercials and records video clips.

In essence, the artist releases a music release, the rights of which are fully protected, all sound fragments have been purchased. Of course this product has high quality, which distinguishes original music. The difference is quite obvious. By creating an album, the artist pursues the goal of generating income and becoming famous.

Thus, there is a significant difference between the concepts of a mixtape and an album, but in both cases we are talking about music.

Varieties

DJs and rappers are working in this direction. The first ones are engaged in mixing various musical compositions, creating one stream. The latter become presenters who read a certain text under sounding melody. Sometimes they focus on the transition of one melody to another.

You don't need DJs to make rapper mixtapes. In this case, musicians combine their own tracks with others. They rap, which combines lyrics. There can be a huge number of such options.

Amateur mixtapes are also very popular. They are created independently by ordinary music listeners at home. We will tell you how to record a mixtape and what you need for this. The process is not too complicated. To create such a recording, you need to have several musical melodies. Usually their quality is lower than the original mix. To record both an amateur and a professional mixtape, you need to have a list of the right songs, a mixture of compositions, and general themes.

Well-known works

Several projects can be distinguished in this direction: Memorial Day Mixtape; "New Russian rap"; "There was no sadness." DJs became very popular after creating mixtapes; for example, the composition White Owl Drop That 31 is known to many. According to certain categories, such recordings become a series of mixtapes. They acquire a semi-official character.

What is the purpose of creating such work?

What does a mixtape mean? musical world? To understand this, just listen to a few recordings. Professionals release them in large quantities, but since they do not have official status, the recordings are distributed only in the amateur music community. It's much harder to give an exact answer to what mixtapes are for. Aspiring artists include them in their promotional presentations. To do this, they give their tunes to DJs. After mixing, a single tape with original design is obtained, which is shown to the general public.

To create an album of original music requires large financial investments. You need to make video clips, mix melodies and mastering. You can make a mixtape without the costs described above and without restrictions. An artist can easily mix several of his songs and quickly distribute them on the Internet. Amateurs are creating mixtapes according to the most various reasons: for your own listening, talking about your musical preferences, demonstrating your talent, trying out an unfamiliar program, out of interest.

How to record your own mixtape

It's very easy for a musician to do this kind of work. There is a lot for this various programs. Next we'll talk about how to make a mixtape in FL Studio. The manufacturing technology consists of several steps.

Concept

It is advisable to have a specific direction. Come up with a name, draw a cover. In a mixtape of your own compositions, you should include only new, not yet published creations.

Beat selection

If your own beats are not enough, you can borrow other people's melodies. You can find the necessary instrumental versions of the required tracks on the Internet.

Selection of samples

When creating a mixtape, you should always remember that this method has become widespread among professionals. Therefore, you need to use only high-quality copyright texts.

True, not everyone may like this interpretation. There are two ways out of this situation. Create your own musical accompaniment or use previous works that did not appear in the albums. For example, songs by famous world performers.

How to record music

If difficulties arise when recording music, you can use the services of a professional DJ. It makes it easier to select suitable tracks. The author will only have to rap to them.

Cover

To distribute your creation among rap fans not only on the Internet, you need to carefully think through the picture that will decorate the future CD. Her appearance must attract attention with its originality and bright colors. The cover should not contain unnecessary details. To be completely successful, she must have original picture and title.

So we discussed such a thing as a mixtape. You already know what it is.

FL Studio: how to make a mixtape

First of all, we launch the program. Next we load from open sources all the necessary components, vocals, main melody, effects. At the first stage we set the rhythm. Next, using the function of the same name, we determine the tempo. For accuracy of the process, you can use a metronome. Next we move on to working with chords. The Newton 2 plugin available in FL Studio will help us with this. Thanks to it, you can get a sample located in accordance with the notes. Then you can diversify the melody using the piano and other instruments.

Hello my dear subscribers. Do you love music as much as I love it? Surely there are many music lovers among you, some love Hannah, some Basta, and some are downloading a new mixtape to their player.

“What is this mixtape?” - you ask. Let us figure it out together, especially since I have long been interested in the issue of the legality of such recordings. Are there any legal experts among my readers? What do you have to say about this?

I often wonder how quickly the world is changing. There is a joke in our family: my cat is 17 years old and my mother often says, look, the cat was little and everyone listened to tape recorders and cassettes, and now everyone has a tablet and a smartphone. So much has changed in one cat's life.

And, it’s true, if earlier Suga’s mixtape seemed to us the pinnacle of professionalism, then today, with several necessary programs and a minimum amount of skills and knowledge (all videos on how to do this can be freely found on YouTube), you yourself can become the ruler of the dance floors.

In addition, with the advent of YouTube, you can become popular without spending a ruble, and the channel itself and subscribers will make a profit. Have you ever created your own mixtape? If yes, write in the comments and share your experience, it will be very interesting to read everything and, if possible, even listen.

So what is it?

Mixtape is a cassette or disc created by a DJ, which contains a variety of compositions and all of them are connected into one or separate tracks. Mixtapes can be DJ mixtapes (for example, Oksimiron’s mixtape), where the musician took several tracks and mixed them, or they can also be rapper mixtapes. A DJ can invite a rapper as a host, he will make announcements between tracks, there are also mixtapes purely written by rappers, where you won’t hear the DJ at all.

Mixtapes are often mixed collections of individual songs from different artists, although you can also find thematic ones (for example, a mixtape of songs by a single musician or all performers rapping to the beat of one beatmaker). As a rule, mixtapes are released by the authors themselves - DJs or rappers from their own label, who then distribute their work through YouTube. Thus, they bypass long procedures in the direction own work to music stores and major music chains.

Many aspiring artists look at a mixtape as an option for their own promotion and popularization; they quickly and willingly give their new, not yet released tracks to popular DJs for mixtapes. Many DJs release numerous series of mixtapes every month. Just imagine for a moment how many of them there already are today. It seems to me that it is almost impossible to count this anymore.
By the way, there is no need to confuse mixtapes and individual records.

What is the difference between a mixtape and an album?

Albums usually take a very long time to record and release. All this is accompanied by large advertising projects, presentations, video clips, the release takes a long time to prepare, and then is sold.

The record is often prepared for more than one year, but all this is official - copyrights are protected, all taxes are paid, documents are drawn up. And mixtapes are created many times faster; as a rule, they are released unofficially. This is precisely the reason that you can hear different musical accompaniments in the tracks, since the creator can do whatever his heart desires.

No producer or boss will say that this is “not a format”; there is no censorship here. Also, mixtapes often use other people’s fragments from sound recordings, music that millions of people want to hear; in general, these are limitless spaces for music lovers; no one will forbid taking Pugacheva’s song and adding Rihanna’s motifs to it.

The finished list can be quickly posted on the World Wide Web or burned to disk, listened to in your own car, or transferred to friends’ phones. Who will stop you from doing this? That’s right – no one.

Here's a cute mixtape for you)

Is this legal? Maybe you just stole this music?

Here I will write my personal opinion, and would like to discuss this matter with you. On the one hand, we use common sense logic: a person recorded a song, then a disc, posted it on the Internet, you purchased it on the official website or downloaded it for free from someone who previously bought everything for money. Why, explain to me, you cannot use this music in a remix, despite the fact that you are not trying to pass off this song as your own, and you always indicate the music of which author or artist was used.

You don’t steal someone else’s track from an artist’s personal safe and try to remix it a few days before the official release.

It seems to me that the artists themselves are not against their music becoming part of some cool mixtape. Don't you think so? Then explain why they release several variations of one track in their albums. This can be especially seen in rap. The first song, as always, is released to the public, then there is another version that will not be played on the radio (it will not pass censorship). The album has 2 more versions of the same track: instrumental and acapella. If you have your own opinion on this matter, I look forward to your comments.

Mixtapes use only music famous artists?

I also cannot find a clear answer to this answer. Yes and no. You can create a mix of tracks by foreign authors, you can dilute a foreign language with a domestic one, you can add several personal compositions.

Why do artists make mixtapes?

There are many reasons for this. Firstly, you can’t release a record that often, because it’s a long-term process that requires a lot of money. Expensive advertising, presentation, video, you should discuss all these points with the director of the label, with the producer, etc., but what if you can release one track every day?

The record contains only 20 songs, and you all write songs, come up with new themes - who needs it and where to go with it? You want to convey your own thoughts and creativity to listeners, and they, in turn, want to listen to it. What's the solution - releasing a record a month? Believe me, no company can implement this; no, it can, of course, but it won’t want to.
Secondly, demonstrating your own abilities. Here comes the song talented performer, and you take the minus and record your version of the track, something like a cover version. The main thing here is not to sing too much, but to really record something of your own: original, unpredictable, something you will like. You can even change the words, come up with an original musical addition, whatever your heart desires.

My dear subscribers, I wanted to discuss one more thing with you - did you hear mixtape rap Monster?

If yes, share your impressions, if not, be sure to listen and you definitely won’t regret it. This is probably one of my favorite mixtapes of our time.
The world of music has no horizons, and I think there is a place here for every performer, rapper, DJ or simple amateur who also wants to make themselves known to the whole world.

By the way, if you are interested in good mixtapes, I recommend this material from the Pitchfork website, which is one of the most authoritative music sources of our time. Text— Agent Q.

Part 2, in which the author under the nickname “38 bit” tells us what a mixtape is

When we were very young yard boys and girls who carelessly walked among the Khrushchev buildings, playing Cossacks and robbers, while our parents and other individuals were recovering from a severe hangover of the nineties, each of us was the owner of cassette tapes with a collection of songs.

It could be a cassette like “The Best AUE Blatnyak”, “Popsa in Da House Vol. 1”, “Rock Ballads”, “Rapsodie” or the cassette that you traded for a stack of chips and a couple of caps from your friend who did breakdancing. In essence, all these cassettes are mixtapes, although it’s a very Russian mix and Russian tape, but the meaning, I think, is clear.

In general, a “mixtape” is tracks recorded in a chaotic or specific order,

usually in hip-hop style, similar to the Russian “collection”, or the most fashionable “set”. Well, that's first.
In general it was like this. At the dawn of the rise of rap culture on the west and east coasts of the United States, where blacks were not yet allowed anywhere near recording studios, the inhabitants of the ghetto had a need to record and distribute their, so to speak, creativity.

Since the possibilities were limited environment, and the rise of money through drugs brought little positive to the already very tense life of a black man - after all, even the ass could be shot and imprisoned due to lawlessness, many calmer inhabitants of the ghetto, usually DJs, began to compile cassettes with recordings of various kinds of local rappers, i.e. MC. The idea found its response, and now every self-respecting gangsta, having recorded a couple of tracks, amused himself with thoughts like “What if it shoots? And I’ll get into, as they say, a convertible and go somewhere.”

A classic of the genre - a mixtape from Master Mike

And so, sometimes, having made a bunch of cassettes, this same owner of a two-cassette player would go to a club, or simply stand on a car with an open trunk, and distribute his version of what was happening. Although not only he could sell, the performer himself, his brothers, or anyone could do it, because if it sells, then why not sell?

The mixtapes were distributed, given to local radio outlets, more or less famous figures hip-hop on price. (In America, by the way, it is strictly with copyrights, even in some cases they can put you on a chair with spades. In Russia, of course, there is Chapter 70, but it is remembered only at lectures when they study the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, so there is no chance of getting monetary reward The Russian folk rapper has almost no income from sales of CDs/cassettes, even such whales as Kasta gave away fresh albums to pirates - they paid at least a penny, and they distributed it through the motherfucker throughout the entire territory of the Russian Federation, not like these labels like “Stopro”) .

Life went on as usual

Some were extinguished for their diss, others signed a contract and left without saying goodbye, but mixtapes were played on boomboxes near basketball courts, at parties, from cars, and sometimes even on the radio. Last option elevated the performers to the ranks of local superstars, and now they received much more often. Previously, you had to talk all sorts of nonsense about how beautiful the baby is, but now you don’t need to do that, because a real true star will only communicate with a crack-fucked skin if it’s Dr. Dre’s mom.

It’s strange to imagine young Eminem, Redman or Snoop Dogg running around and handing over cassettes with their tracks, isn’t it?

It is worth saying that the practice of using mixtapes for the purpose of promotion was used not only by blacks and not only by rappers, but it was in this culture that they became an integral part of it. Mixtapes can contain a variety of music in style and direction.

It could be a cassette that you can get stuck into, relax, go on a binge, or lift iron in the gym.
But that was in a time already far from us, because development is proceeding at a breakneck pace. It was the Inquisition that had its own reasons for holding back development, burning all sorts of popular science books, citizens, employees of the Russian Academy of Sciences, for their ideas, to put it mildly, anti-divine.

Lol, was it for nothing that we bumped into so many churches? And there, and there.

This is how you are today with the Internet, this is a fucking repost, and discussions are already being held about any guy on the other side of the world, either on the couch, or by the special services. Audio media and other goodies have changed.

These guys always bring the heat. Massive Attack mixtape from back in 1994:

In general, today, a mixtape is not necessarily a cassette

And not necessarily a certain number of tracks. The concept of a mixtape has deformed, as has the perception of music and other branches of human intellectual activity.

Every artist has something like an album. The album takes a certain amount of time to prepare. For some it takes a month, for others a year. On these same albums they usually use their own beats, unique ones, which are made mainly to suit the style of the artist. Texts are written with a certain message. Have more famous musicians there are labels that help them with recording, try to protect copyrights, shoot videos, organize concerts. In short, everything is very complicated, serious and dreary. This is work.

But in parallel with this, sometimes there is a desire to record, for example, a fit, or you’re just so drunk at home with pasans and you want to fill up the turnip, or there’s just a lot of free material, where to put it? And so the rapper records songs under herpoymiprod, and uploads them to the Internet, for the people. This is essentially a mixtape. The people are rocking, but the rapper is running out of steam.
Such tracks can contain any beat, any text, even insert Pugacheva’s acapella. Rap, so to speak, has no frames or boundaries. But in the end it turns out that the entire underground is one big mixtape. Just like that. *scratch sound

Every music listener has several favorite hits that can be listened to an infinite number of times. They carefully arrange them in order in their playlists and embark on a rhythmic journey through the musical waves. Professional musicians met their listeners halfway and came up with such a thing as a mixtape. What are they and who creates them?

Story

A mixtape is a type of sound recording that involves combining several musical compositions or skits (short prose stories) in one tape. Essentially, this is a collection of songs, but with a specific purpose and principle of mixing tracks or fragments thereof and presented as a single composition.

The history of the mixtape dates back to the 60-80s of the last century, when 8-track tapes were created using a homemade method. True, then the term itself did not yet exist. The pioneers of this method of sound recording are considered to be truck drivers who mixed their favorite music on audio cassettes. Later they began to appear on flea markets. The most popular mixtapes of that time can be called “Super 73”, “Top of Pop 1977”, “Country Chart”, etc.

However, there is another point of view regarding the history of the “mixtape” phenomenon, that such a concept could have arisen among American “black” rappers. This is why audio mixing is common in hip-hop culture today.

In rap

A mixtape in rap is most often a mixture of tracks from different artists. They are usually just the mix creator's musical favorites. There is another reason when compositions can be united by a common theme. In this case, the tracks belong to one artist or various artists read the beats of one specific beatmaker.

Mixtape and album

Mixtapes are created quickly and informally. There is no strict boss or producer here who will evaluate and criticize music selection, adjust it for radio release and censorship. The mixtape is the absolute artist, the musical accompaniment, the instruments. Here you can take a bard singer, add female lyrical vocals, and set it all to the rhythmic music of a famous rap hit.

If everything is so clear and transparent with the concept of a mixtape, what is an album? The difference here is immediately noticeable. An album is a long and painstaking work professional musician, which is accompanied by certain advertising and the release of video clips. This is an official music release, all rights are reserved, and samples (sound fragments for writing music) have been purchased. Naturally, all these components are reflected in the quality and accessibility of original music. Albums work primarily to create a label and promote the artist’s name.

Kinds

Today mixtapes are divided into two large groups: DJ and rapper. Their names themselves determine the creator. The first, of course, belong to DJs who mix various compositions, turning them into a single musical stream. Rappers in this option act as presenters (hosting), accompanying the recording by reading a certain text or placing emphasis on the transitions of one track to another.

However, there are also pure rapper mixtapes. They are created without the participation of a DJ. Musicians combine their own or other people’s tracks, perform rap, use their own or other people’s lyrics. The number of options here is endless. Therefore, it is very difficult to answer unequivocally what a mixtape is in rap. But the determining factor is that the leading role belongs to the rap artist and his

There are also amateur mixtapes. They are created by ordinary music listeners at home. Such non-studio recordings are made using other people's musical creations. As a rule, they are slightly lower in quality and originality of the mix.

Mixtapes of any kind, whether professional or amateur, are usually built on three principles: a random list of favorite songs, a conceptual mixture of compositions with a general mood and theme, or they are some kind of personal statement addressed to a specific addressee indicated at the beginning of the tape (intro). .

Famous mixtapers

Among well-known rap projects in this vein, one can highlight the American hip-hop group Diplomats with Memorial Day Mixtape or the Ukrainian rapper Drago with “New Russian Rap” or the mixtape “There Was No Sorrow.”

Many DJs have also gained popularity by creating mixtapes. Thus, in 2008, the original mix White Owl Drop That 31 from the American DJ WhiteOwl was released. This was already the 31st sound recording of this type. According to certain principles and categories, such recordings turn into a series of mixtapes and have a semi-official character.

Purpose of creation

It’s not difficult to understand what a mixtape is in music; all you have to do is listen to a couple of recordings that are widely available. They come out of the hands of professionals and amateurs in large quantities and, without official status, are easily distributed among amateurs. However, it is more difficult to answer the question of why mixtapes are created.

Today, many aspiring artists use them as a promotional presentation. They give their musical creations to DJs, who mix them into a single tape and present their creativity in an original frame to the general public. In this case, fragments of compositions are used, that is, intrigue is created and interest in the performer increases.

Original music and albums require a lot of money and effort for mastering, mixing, and creating videos. While mixtapes are more accessible and have virtually no restrictions. If a musician has several songs, he is for a short time can mix them and quickly distribute them on the Internet.

Amateur mixtapes are created for various reasons: for personal listening, a statement of one’s musical tastes, creative talents or to try new equipment, programs, creativity, etc.

Do it yourself

If a person feels in himself creative potential, is well versed in music, nothing stops him from creating his own mixtape. It can be composed of favorite compositions by different artists or your own creations. The only thing left to do is to understand how to make a mixtape so that listeners will like it. The whole process can be summarized in five steps:

  1. Concept. It is best that the future mixtape is not built chaotically, but on a specific idea, direction, and has a name and cover. If the mixtape includes songs or skits own composition, then it is necessary to select only new material, which has not yet been published.
  2. A selection of beats. When your own beats don't match your idea of what a mixtape should sound like, you can turn to other people's creations. There are a lot of them on the Internet. You can take, for example, instrumental versions of your favorite tracks or buy unique material from an enterprising Internet producer.
  3. A selection of samples. When creating a mixtape, you need to clearly understand that this phenomenon is quite common in a professional environment, so you can use high-quality and popular samples with original lyrics. But not everyone wants to listen to such an interpretation. And here there are two options: create your own musical accompaniment or use the works of predecessors who were not allowed on the albums. Among these are the works of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and SteelyDan.
  4. Recording music. If for some reason the author of a mixtape cannot record his project on his own (no equipment or skills), you can turn to a professional DJ. He will select several suitable tracks, and the author will “rap” to them. If the rapper himself is taken into account for the mix, then you need to be confident in the quality of the equipment, microphone and selection of the necessary programs. All this works for good quality sound.
  5. Cover. If the author of a mixtape intends to distribute his creation not only on the Internet, but also “in the hands” of his audience, then he should prepare a cover for a future CD. It should be catchy. You can use your own originally processed photo or other image. It is better to avoid unnecessary details. Success in in this case is based on three pillars: original name, the name of the mixtape and a memorable picture.

Is it possible to sell mixtapes?

If there is demand, then why can't there be supply? After all, a lot of effort and talent was also invested in the creation of the mixtape. But since this is an unofficial release, it is sold “from the tray,” that is, distributed among the creator’s circle of acquaintances and fans. In the DJ environment, this is happening more officially today. Mixtapes are released in large quantities, played in clubs and on the radio.

Behind last years the words MIXTAPE or Bootleg and if with the word mixtape you can at least somehow guess what it’s about we're talking about- (mix on cassettes?), then what a bootleg is, I didn’t even bother, I just looked at WIKIPEDIA.

And this is what I actually found:

Bootleg

Bootleg is an audio recording compiled and distributed without the permission of the copyright holders. Bootlegs should be distinguished from pirated copies - unauthorized copies of legally released products.

Bootlegs are often illegal publications, but some musical groups allow, for example, the non-commercial distribution of their concert recordings or amateur remixes. This has led to collectors legally exchanging copies of such bootlegs by mail (first on audio cassettes, then on CDRs) and over the Internet.

The first bootleg is believed to be the 1969 double album known as "The Great White Wonder", which contains fragments of the joint studio sessions between Bob Dylan and The group Band. The identities of his publishers are hidden behind the names Ken and Dub. The popularity of the bootleg forced Columbia Records to officially release the recording under the title Basement Tapes in 1975.

Types of bootlegs

Concert recordings. Based on the recording method, a distinction is made between higher-quality recordings from a mixing console (“soundboard”) and, often lower-quality, recordings made in the hall with one microphone using a portable recording device (“audience”). In the 1990s, when portable audio recording devices (minidisc, DAT) became widespread and available, allowing relatively high-quality recordings to be made with a small (and inconspicuous) microphone, the number of bootlegs of this kind increased significantly.

Recordings of music radio or television programs.

Studio sessions and outtakes(songs or versions of songs that were not included in the numbered editions).

Unofficial collections of material, previously published on albums (for example, the “Archive” series popular music"; Russian collection “An sich” by Einstürzende Neubauten).

Recordings by other artists or projects, passed off as an album by an artist. There are two options:

1) A third-party album presented as an artist album. Examples include the album "Tibet" by the Waterbone project, presented as a new release from Deep Forest with the title "Waterbone Tibet"; the album of the Dutch project Erotic Dreams - “Temple of Love” (1998), in 2005 released by pirates as the new album of the Enigma project - “Erotic Dreams”. In such cases, the source material is published without any changes, the pirates only change the cover and, in some cases, the names of the tracks.

2) " New album"is compiled from tracks by a variety of artists. The tracks not only receive new names (as, for example, in the widespread bootleg of the Era project - “Infinity”), but also undergo significant changes: extraneous samples are superimposed on them, they are cut and combined into a single work of parts different compositions. The most famous bootleg of this type is the album “Metamorphosis”, which misled hundreds of thousands of listeners who were expecting the release of the fourth album of the Enigma project.

mixtape

Mixtape - special kind music release. The name comes from the English words mix and tape (literally translated as a mixed recording, see mix).

The very concept of " mixtape" was born in the USA, among black rappers, so mixtapes are most common in the hip-hop community. Most often, mixtapes are mixed collections of individual tracks from different artists, although there are also thematic ones (for example, a mixtape of tracks from a specific artist or all artists rapping on the beats of a specific beatmaker). Often mixtapes are released by their authors themselves - DJs on their own labels, and then distributed on the streets through their channels, bypassing official music stores and large retail chains. When hip-hop was just beginning, DJs sold their mixtapes on the streets from the trunks of their cars and in clubs.

Many aspiring artists consider mixtapes as a means for their own promotion, so they readily give their new tracks to famous DJs for mixtapes. Many DJs release whole series of mixtapes, for example DJ White Owl in early September 2008 released the mixtape WHITE OWL DROP THAT 31, that is, the thirty-first of this series. At the same time, mixtapes have a semi-official status, small circulations (relative to official albums of famous artists) and instantly leak to the Internet. IN currently There are a great many mixtapes (no one even counted them), and people well-known in certain circles (for example, kotbay93) release another 5-20 every day.

Also in the hip-hop community, the fame gained by an artist in the underground mixtape market is especially valued. Such fame even has a specific name - streetfame(lit. “street fame”), street cred (lit. “respect for the streets”) and it is contrasted with fame achieved through music videos, appearances in glossy magazines and music news releases
