An evening of Russian romance is an opportunity for students to get acquainted with Russian musical culture, for a dialogue of feelings and emotions between students and teachers, and for enriching their spiritual world.

Presenter 1: Romance...It is full of charm and light sadness. Meeting him is always pleasant and welcome. Today we will get acquainted with the history of the emergence of romance and the development of this musical genre in Russia.

Many of you enjoy listening to romances or singing them yourself. Where did romance first appear? Where did he come to us on Russian soil from? What does this word mean?

Presenter 2: Spain is considered the birthplace of romance. It was here in the XIII - XIV centuries. wandering poet-singers created a new musical genre. The word “romance” comes from the Spanish “romance”, that is, performed in the “Roman” language (as Spanish was called then), and not in Latin - official language catholic church. How to understand this? Very simple. At that time in Spain, all church songs were sung in Latin, and the so-called secular songs were sung in national language. Therefore, a work written in the Romance language was called a novel, and poems set to music were called romances. Later, a romance in Spain began to be considered any solo song performed accompanied by a musical instrument, most often a guitar or piano.

Aristocrats of the 17th century treated common folk songs with contempt. Even the word “song” itself seemed plebeian to them. It was then that works with love content and a sensitive melody began to be called throughout Europe by the beautiful Spanish word “romance”, in contrast to common folk songs.

Presenter 1: In Russia, this genre appeared in early XIX centuries and immediately won everyone’s love. The first Russian romances were composed in French, and not only by composers, but also by amateur singers. Their names often remained unknown.

Presenter 2: But the names of those who are known throughout the world: Alexander Sergeevich Dargomyzhsky, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Alexandrovich Alyabyev, Dmitry Dmitrievich Shostakovich, Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka and others. How many amazing romances were created by great composers! Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky alone wrote more than 100 romances. They are close and understandable to us today, just as they were close and understandable people XIX and XX centuries.

Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov created unusually heartfelt romances that reveal human feelings, images of nature, and reflections on art. The most famous of the cycle “By the Sea” is the romance “Crushes and Splashes”.

Presenter 2: Over time, the romance expanded its scope and was filled with love, comic, and satirical content. Its varieties appeared: elegy, ballad, dramatic monologue, urban, gypsy and folk romance.

Let's talk about each of them and start with folk romance. Its melody is similar to a drawn-out folk song. It resembles a kind of lyrical statement. A wonderful illustration would be the well-known romance “My Joy Lives.”

Presenter 1: Next, our conversation will focus on elegy. An elegy is a lyrical and philosophical poem. An example of an elegy is the romance “Foggy Morning” to the words of Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. Poem “Foggy Morning” by I.S. Turgenev wrote in November 1843 under the impression of a break with Tatyana Bakunina, the sister of the famous anarchist revolutionary Mikhail Bakunin. In the work one can hear a nagging feeling of longing for the past happiness, the homeland, which the author voluntarily left and lived on the edge of someone else's nest in the family of Pauline Viardot. The music for these beautiful words was written by the officer of the Life Guards Hussar Regiment, Erast Abaza, a gifted musician with a keen sense of beauty. A talented young man died during the Crimean War in besieged Sevastopol in June 1855. And the romance “Foggy Morning” is still loved.

Presenter 2: A romance, which is similar to a ballad, is characterized by images inspired by ancient tales and legends. They tell about historical events and heroes, reveal their experiences and deeds. Thus, the romance “Because of the Island to the Core” tells about the dashing ataman Stenka Razin and his squad.

Presenter 1: The gypsy romance arose like this. The gypsies, not having beautiful lyrics, began to perform works by Russian authors so masterfully that listeners perceived them as gypsy romances. The romance “Shine, Shine, My Star” became gypsy. The life of its author, the talented Russian composer Pyotr Petrovich Bulakov, was spent in dire need. Out of mercy, the composer was sheltered by Count Sheremetyev in his Moscow estate Kuskovo. More than 100 years have passed since then, and the melodies of P.P. Bulakov sound, helping people survive adversity.

Presenter 2: Romance in Russia has become so popular that it has its own biography. The fate of many is unusual famous romances. They were created in the bright moments of the lives of poets and composers, and preserved part of their lives and souls.

1823 Munich. Russian diplomatic mission. It was here that 20-year-old diplomat Fyodor Tyutchev met Countess Amalia Lerchenfeld, the half-sister of the Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Nicholas 1, illegitimate daughter Prussian King Frederick William III. Within a year of dating, the young countess charmed Tyutchev so much that the young diplomat decided to marry her. But the Russian nobleman did not seem to be a very profitable match for Amalia’s parents, and preference was given to Tyutchev’s colleague, embassy secretary Baron Krudener. But neither Amalia nor Tyutchev forgot their youthful affection and carried it through their entire lives. Over the years they met less and less often. One of their meetings took place in 1870 in German resort town Carlsbad, where the poet wrote his confession poem:

I met you and everything is gone

In the obsolete heart came to life;

I remembered the golden time -

And my heart felt so warm...

Set to music, this poem became a popular romance. Last meeting occurred in March 1873, when Amalia Maximilianovna appeared at the bed where the poet, broken by paralysis, lay. Tyutchev's face brightened, tears appeared in his eyes. He looked at her for a long time, without uttering a word out of excitement...

Presenter 1: The pride of Russian classics can be called the romances of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka. The composer wrote them throughout his life based on poems by contemporary poets and close friends. A special place in the author’s vocal lyrics is occupied by works based on the words of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. A real pearl that unites the geniuses of the poet and composer is the romance “I Remember wonderful moment" This romance has an amazing story.

Imagine St. Petersburg, 1819. One of the noisy social evenings. Pushkin followed with his eyes a very young, charming woman. “It was as if a heavy load was pressing on her, and there was hidden sadness in her huge eyes.” This is how the poet Anna Kern was remembered. As a 16-year-old girl, she was married to a rude man who was a complete stranger to her. Six years have passed. Pushkin was in exile in the village of Mikhailovskoye. How great was the poet’s joy when he unexpectedly met Anna Kern at the Osipovs’, friends of neighbors on the estate. She stopped while passing through with her relative, the mistress of the estate. Every evening Alexander Sergeevich listened to Kern’s singing, and each time the poet’s passion grew. The last day has arrived. Anna Petrovna was leaving for Pskov to visit her husband. Pushkin came to see Kern off and presented her with the recently published second chapter of the novel “Eugene Onegin.” When Anna opened the uncut pages of the donated book, a small piece of paper fell out with the poem “I Remember a Wonderful Moment,” dedicated to her. This poem will forever go down in the history of Russian poetry as one of the masterpieces.

Presenter 2: In 1838, at one of his sister’s family parties, Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka met Ekaterina, the daughter of Anna Petrovna Kern. That evening Glinka was not in a good mood. Quarrels with his wife deprived him of sleep and appetite. He could not create selflessly and enthusiastically as before. For several years now, a quarrelsome, stupid, pompous woman had lived nearby - his wife, whose interests did not go beyond balls, cards and horses. He knew that this couldn't go on any longer. The composer was distracted from his gloomy thoughts by the sounds of a waltz, and then he saw Ekaterina Ermolaevna. He listened to her voice, followed the movements of her hands, and something unusually bright, not yet conscious, was born in his soul. For the first time in many years, Glinka felt that he was young, strong and happy no matter what. And soon Ekaterina Kern had the notes of Glinka’s romance based on Pushkin’s poems “I Remember a Wonderful Moment.” And again, like fifteen years ago, when Pushkin presented the poems to Anna Kern, they sounded like recognition.

Romance entered our lives. It touches the most invisible strings of the beautiful, lofty, inexplicable in the soul. Of course, today we didn’t have time to talk about all the romances, their authors and performers. Yes, this is impossible. Main preliminary preparation in the evening it is associated with vocal numbers, since the evening involves the performance of romances. Performers can be students, the class teacher and other school teachers, parents and invited performers. The use of audio recordings of romances is possible, but undesirable, since it may be dissonant with the “live” musical dialogue. Both teachers and students can act as hosts of the evening.

The evening requires the creation of a lyrical, slightly mysterious, contemplative atmosphere. Consequently, participants can be placed in a circle with a clearly highlighted center of attention - an impromptu stage. Draperies and candlesticks with candles are used in the decoration of the evening. On the walls there are portraits of poets and writers (F.I. Tyutchev, I.S. Turgenev, A.A. Delvig, A.S. How often do we hear in concerts, on television, in home music playing? vocal works, distinguished by exceptional expressiveness, bright melody, figurative poetic words, and a rare fusion of poetic and musical ideas. These works are often short in volume, their voice is quiet and addressed not to a mass audience of listeners, but to each of those sitting in the hall, so simply and sincerely they narrate the most intimate feelings, experiences, and deep thoughts.
These works are called romances.
Romance is a name that originates from the Spanish word “romance”, which means “Roman”, that is, performed in the “Roman” (Spanish) language. This name appeared when so-called “secular” songs became widespread in Spain. Unlike church chants, which in Catholic countries were always sung in Latin, “secular” songs were sung in Spanish. Romances-plays for voice with instrumental accompaniment, spread from Spain throughout Europe. In the 18th century, the romance genre also appeared in Russian music, becoming one of the remarkable pages of Russian musical art. Currently, the term “romance” refers to diverse forms of chamber music. vocal music, including such varieties as ballad, elegy, barcarolle, serenade, song-romance, romances in dance rhythms, monologue romances, vocal fantasies.
There are also romances without words. They are sung by an instrument - violin, piano, or cello - as if imitating human voice. Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Rachmaninov, Gliere and other composers have such instrumental romances.
Many composers have turned and continue to turn to the romance genre. No matter how large-scale the composer’s work developed, in his plans, as a rule, there was always a place for romance. We all know M. I. Glinka’s operas “Ivan Susanin”, “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, which are examples of Russian classical music. But the composer’s romances are no less famous: “Do not tempt me unnecessarily” on
poems by E. Baratynsky, “The fire of desire burns in the blood” to poems by A. Pushkin, song-romance “Lark” to words by N. Kukolnik. In total, M. Glinka created about 80 vocal works that still sound, live, and delight today, although more than a hundred years have passed since they were written.

At the beginning of the 20th century, composers appeared who combined the intonations of Russian songwriting with the intonations and rhythms of gypsy songs, forming another branch of Russian romance with an openly sensual sphere of emotions, with sharply dynamic rhythms, and a tart modal-harmonic structure. The openness and trustworthiness of such romances earned them popularity among the broad, musically unprepared masses of listeners, as well as the denial of such vocal production among subtle adherents of the romance genre. Of course, it’s impossible to imagine M.I.’s romance side by side. Glinka’s “I Remember a Wonderful Moment” and “Chrysanthemums” by early 20th century composer Nikolai Kharito. They belong to the extreme poles artistic creativity. However, it is also impossible to deny the existence and well-known popularity of such romances as “Chrysanthemums” and “I remember the lovely sound of a waltz” by N. Listov, which are often heard in concerts. Sincere feeling, the warmth of the melody, the unobtrusiveness of the images, the ease of perception - all this attracted listeners to these romances.

Among the romances of the 30s, created based on the poems of A. S. Pushkin, a cycle of six works by the young, then still little, attracted attention. famous Yuri Sviridov, so in those years it was now signed worldwide famous composer Georgy Vasilievich Sviridov. This word is convenient to describe chamber vocal works created by professional composers with the words of professional poets. This is a romance in a tailcoat and bow tie, to be performed by a professional singer in a chamber concert and is not intended for everyday singing.

Romance has no “themes”, it has only one theme - love. Everything else: life and death, eternity and time, fate and its blows, faith and unbelief, loneliness and disappointment - only to the extent that it is connected with this main and only theme.

Romance is a tiny island in the ocean of existence. It can be easily recognized by its verbal composition. Drawing from Russian lyrics and Russian music, romance has become a most expressive phenomenon national culture and in turn significantly influenced the development of poetry and musical art, theatrical and variety genres, to cinema.

Russian romances of the first half of the 19th century. were not created for performance in concerts, their purpose was considered by the authors to be much more modest: to awaken a sense of beauty in a narrow circle of people meeting in a relaxed atmosphere. Confessional romances and confessional romances occupy an important place in this era. In them, the feeling of love, as a rule, does not seek its quenching, because the words addressed to the beloved or beloved are just emerging.

In Russian poetry there are prophecy poems. One of them is Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev’s poem “On the Road”: “Foggy morning, gray morning”... Many years later, Yulia Abaza wrote a romance based on these poems. It was perceived as a reflection of Turgenev’s love for Pauline Viardot. Turgenev and Viardot met for the first time in 1843. Pauline Viardot was one of the most remarkable women of the 19th century. Great singer, intelligent and multi-talented, although very ugly, for many she became a symbol of female perfection. The daughter of Spanish artists, she was friendly with many thought leaders of her time. Franz Liszt gave her piano lessons. Her closest friend was the famous French writer George Sand, who wrote her Consuelo from Pauline Viardot. Chopin admired her not only as a singer, but also as a composer. Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated his opera Samson and Delilah to her. Poems by Pleshcheev and Benediktov were dedicated to her. Each time she left Russia, showered with precious gifts. But more valuable than gifts and all awards was Turgenev’s love for her. Turgenev's letters to Viardot are an amazing love affair that lasted 40 years. The writer’s friends recalled that Turgenev’s relationship with Viardot “was covered by some kind of sad fog.”

Pauline Viardot outlived Turgenev by twenty-seven years and died at a ripe old age in 1910. Remembering the masterpieces of Russian vocal lyrics, it is impossible to ignore the work of Alexander Egorovich Varlamov. It is unlikely that in the entire history of Russian music there will be a composer with such a changeable creative destiny. And today his best romances continue to sound, touching with their sincerity. A.E. Varlamov is the author of essentially the first Russian “School of Singing”. Among his popular romances, “At Dawn Don’t Wake Her Up” stands out. The secret of his charm is hidden in the illusion that he creates, as if he is constantly changing (from verse to verse) musical material, whereas in fact the melody does not undergo any updating.

In mid-1822, he arrived at the Russian diplomatic mission in Munich. new employee, Fedor Ivanovich Tyutchev. He recently graduated from Moscow University and has been publishing poetry since the age of 15. Apparently, poetry was more of a leisure activity for him. Soon Tyutchev became a welcome guest in Munich court circles. At one of the social gatherings, he saw a girl of amazing beauty and felt bewitched and in love. Her name was Amalia Lerkhonfeld. She was the natural daughter of the Prussian king Frederick William III and the cousin of the wife of Nicholas I. Then, at the first meeting with Tyutchev, Amalia was only...14 years old. In 1826, Tyutchev married Eleanor Peterson. Amalia became the wife of the first secretary of the Russian embassy in Munich, Baron A.S. Krudener. Years passed. Tyutchev continued diplomatic service. Sometimes he wrote to Amalia, sometimes he asked about her in letters. And he always did not hide his joy if he met her, by accident or intentionally. Several years have passed. July 1870. Ostrovsky’s drama “Dowry”. “Cruel” meant fatal, fatally disastrous, when everything is to the highest degree of passion: if love is so incredible, unprecedented, unthinkable; if jealousy is so hellishly painful; if treachery is so treacherous and more terrible you can’t imagine, if separation is so swift, and melancholy is so sepulchral...

The romances and music in the film were written by Andrei Petrov. Written in the traditions of Russian classics, the music is essentially modern.
