How to quench thirst?

This summer, residents of many cities are exhausted by the heat, stocks of kvass and mineral water disappear from stores, and people are tormented by thirst. How to quench your thirst without harming your health, said specialists from the TU Rospotrebnadzor in the Bryansk region.

As it turned out, the main cause of thirst is a change in the water-salt balance in the blood.

Usually this balance is observed with amazing accuracy: one liter of blood always contains 9.45 grams of table salt, slight fluctuations are possible only in hundredths of a gram. If the salt concentration changes more, the normal activity of the cells supplied with blood will be disturbed.

When a person sweats in the heat, he loses a significant amount of fluid. Evaporation of sweat is one of the ways of thermoregulation with which nature has provided us. In order to maintain a stable body temperature in conditions when the street is above + 30, the evaporation mechanism is launched: the sweat glands are able to release 1-1.5 liters of moisture per hour.

Accordingly, the concentration of salt in the body increases. Then the sensitive cells of the central nervous system begin to send "distress signals". It is at this point that true desire appears. It is nothing more than a protective reaction of the body, warning of cell dehydration.

But then it turns out that the more water you drink in the heat, the better? It turns out not. Because, the more we drink, the more we sweat. According to research, lovers of soft drinks lose up to 12 liters (!) of fluid per day in the heat. And with it, up to 30 grams of sodium chloride leaves the body, which just retains fluid in the tissues. So it turns out a vicious circle: the more you drink, the more you want it.

Is it possible to “break” this vicious circle? Quite. Experts recommend the following drinking regimen to combat thirst in extreme heat:

1. In the morning, before and after breakfast, you can drink tea, coffee, water or juice as much as you want. However should not be addicted to drinks containing caffeine- it, like alcohol, accelerates dehydration. In the future, over the next two hours, you will have to declare a "dry law" or, in extreme cases, eliminate dry mouth with a small sip of water. By the way, if you endure the first acute desire to drink, then in the future the thirst is more easily tolerated.

2. During the third and fourth hours, one glass of cool water is drunk in small sips. During the lunch break before eating, you can afford another glass of soft drink, but after an hour after dinner it is not forbidden to drink as much as your heart desires, however, one should not abuse its latitude.

3. A similar order of drinking regimen should be observed in the afternoon, that is in the next two hours after quenching thirst, do not drink anymore and drink a glass of cool water for the next two hours. Before dinner, you will have to limit yourself to one glass of liquid. It is better not to drink at night.

In total, you need to drink a day not less than 3-3.5 liters.

It is best to drink warm water when thirsty - it will quench your thirst much better and will not cause problems with your throat.

It is advisable to drink before you feel thirsty, so doctors recommend carrying a water bottle with you or keeping it in a conspicuous place so as not to forget to replenish your water supplies on time.

Some drinks are known to quench thirst better than water. So, in Russia for a long time in the heat drink cold kvass, In Central Asia - a cold decoction of dried fruits or green tea, in Kazakhstan - koumiss. The tannin contained, for example, in tea enhances the activity of the salivary glands, increases salivation. This helps to moisturize and cool the oral mucosa and, consequently, reduce the feeling of thirst.

Carbonated (not sweet) waters also have this property: "cauterizing" the oral mucosa, making it less sensitive, which reduces the feeling of dry mouth. When working in extreme heat, in the sun, it is recommended drink sparkling water containing 0.3-0.5% salt. Such a solution not only replenishes the loss of salt, but also helps to establish the optimal ratio between water and salt in the body.

Well removes the feeling of thirst and a refreshing cool shower. Water in its pure form can perfectly replace water-containing vegetables and fruits, e.g. cucumbers, watermelon. At the same time, you will receive an additional portion of vitamins and minerals. Contribute to quench thirst and all kinds of fruit and berry juices, sour to taste. All of them contain vitamins and microelements, salts.

However, do not forget that for some diseases of the digestive system, juices are not recommended. I would like to warn against the excessive use of medicinal mineral waters - such waters should be used according to the doctor's prescription. However, sometimes in a small amount you can drink "Narzan" and "Essentuki No. 20".

In extreme heat, it is also very important to eat right: during the day, dairy and vegetable foods should prevail, and in the evening, when coolness sets in, meat dishes are also acceptable. If during the day you had to sweat a lot, then five grams of salt should be added to the usual diet, which will also help overcome thirst.

From hard liquor doctors advise to give up, because alcohol increases the heat transfer of the body and provokes overheating. In addition, in the heat a person gets drunk faster and stronger than in cool weather. Even beer is desirable to drink only light - not stronger than 3.5-4.5 degrees.

Why invent all sorts of drinks if you can get by with plain water? It turns out you can't. In order for moisture to be more easily retained in the body, it must contain dissolved mineral salts. That is why in the heat, doctors recommend drinking salted or acidified, rather than fresh water. In addition, there is such a thing as “false thirst” - a subjective feeling of a person, caused more by psychological reasons, and not by a true lack of moisture. It is difficult to get rid of such a feeling of thirst, and a person begins to drink more water than required. It is best to quench your “false thirst”, oddly enough, by contemplating a lake, a waterfall, or, at worst, a fountain. Unfortunately, these simple tools are not available during the "working afternoon". You have to resort to the help of various drinks. One of the best remedies for replenishing water loss is tea, especially green tea. Compared to pure water, it takes almost half as much, black tea - less than a third.

Mineral water.

Waters of natural origin are characterized by a high content of biologically active mineral salts. For many, mineral water is a favorite refreshing drink. It perfectly quenches thirst, stimulates appetite, relieves fatigue. But not all mineral waters can be used as drinking water. For this purpose, only table waters of a low degree of mineralization are suitable (4-5 g / l for sodium chloride type waters, 6 g / l for hydrocarbonate waters). The rest of the water can be consumed only as directed by a doctor, in strictly recommended quantities. As table mineral water, you can use such waters as "Borjomi", "Narzan", "Essentuki No. 20", "Arzni", as well as imported mineral waters, which are now sold with us in a wide range. Recently, mineralized waters have become widespread, obtained by adding pure neutral or slightly alkaline salts to ordinary drinking water in the same amount as in the natural counterpart. Both artificial and natural mineral water is always of higher quality if it is stored in glass rather than plastic containers, and waters saturated with carbon dioxide quench thirst much better and more efficiently than water without gas.

Carbonated drinks.

The prototype of all modern carbonated drinks was lemonade. It was prepared by mixing a small amount of sugar, an alcoholic tincture of citrus peels and citrus juice with water. In the Soviet years, our industry produced excellent tonic drinks on a natural basis: "Baikal" containing infusions of eucalyptus and laurel, "Sayan" with an infusion of lemongrass, "Tonic" based on infusions of wormwood, juniper, lemongrass with the addition of quinine.

By the way, drinks such as "cola" were also originally prepared on a natural basis - an infusion of kola nut, rich in stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine. Today it is impossible to find such natural drinks. Food colorings are added to them (at best, caramel (E 150), or carotenoid, red-yellow plant pigments (E 120, 162, they are the safest) and flavorings in the form of essences of synthetic aromatic substances. Even the domestic industry has switched from syrups from natural fruits, berries and herbal infusions for cheaper imported concentrates.

Perhaps the only positive innovation is the use of its substitutes instead of sugar - sorbitol (E420), aspartame (E951) or xylitol (E967). This greatly reduces the calorie content of carbonated drinks, which is important for a modern person, and makes "soda" available to diabetics. All these additives are officially approved for use both in Europe and in our country. Despite the craze for these drinks of children, they can only be drunk by adults.

In Russia, since ancient times, kvass was brewed everywhere - in manor estates, hospitals, monasteries, in soldiers' barracks. Microbiologists found out back in the 19th century that kvass has bactericidal properties: after 20 minutes, vibrio cholerae and typhoid bacilli die in it. Kvass also contains lactic acid bacteria that normalize the intestinal microflora. This natural bread drink has a high nutritional value. The drink produced today in plastic bottles has little in common with true Russian kvass. The scheme of its production is simplified, the chemical composition is changed beyond recognition.

Juices and nectars.

Everyone knows about their beneficial properties. Cherry, plum, cherry plum, dogwood juices quench thirst best of all. It is possible to immediately "kill two birds with one stone" - and quench your thirst, and get valuable substances: vitamins, organic acids, mineral salts. For example, to satisfy the daily requirement for vitamin C, we only need to drink 1/2 glass of fresh blackcurrant, strawberry or sea buckthorn juice, to cover the need for organic acids - 2 glasses of orange or 1 glass of cherry juice. In industrially pasteurized juices, the activity of vitamins is somewhat reduced, but still it is better than nothing.

Juices without pulp are clarified and unclarified, which are better in terms of nutritional properties, although their appearance is not very presentable - cloudy, with sediment. Juices with pulp contain not only fruit juice, but also water-insoluble substances: fiber, pectin, fat-soluble vitamins, so their value is higher. They are prepared by diluting fruit purees with sugar syrup. As a rule, the content of natural fruit juice in them does not exceed 45%.

Juices from concentrates.

The juice obtained by this technology from fresh fruits is not immediately poured into bags, but is first concentrated by evaporation or freezing. Of course, no one will bring oranges from Morocco to Russia in order to make juice from them here. It is also unprofitable to carry juice already poured into bags or bottles. Therefore, imported juices are sometimes so expensive. Moscow usually receives a concentrate, which is diluted at factories with specially prepared water. The content of water and solids in such juices corresponds to the original amount, so these juices are undoubtedly useful. Today, Tetra-Pack type packages are most often used to store juices. They allow you to not use preservatives at all. To stabilize the color of the juice, only ascorbic acid can be added to it.

Juices obtained by freezing are much better than concentrates obtained by thermal drying. In any case, a good juice concentrate is liquid. Powdered juice concentrate (such as “Yupi”) is no longer juice, but an instant drink, the quality of which can be doubted.

Blended juices have very good properties. They are obtained either by simultaneous extraction from different types of raw materials, or by mixing ready-made juices. In Russia, traditional blended juices are apple-grape, pear-apple, carrot-apple, apricot-plum, cherry-cherry. In the name, the main juice is in the first place, the content of which is approximately 75%. Favorite by many juices "Multivitamin" are also blended, only their composition is more complex, it includes about 10 components.

As you know, on a hot day you are always very thirsty. Usually the human body needs 2-2.5 liters of fluid per day, and during physical exertion and in the heat about 4 liters. Losses of moisture must be replenished, but not with anything, but with drinks that are beneficial for our body. “So how to get rid and quench your thirst?” - you ask. Here is a ranking of the healthiest drinks that best quench your thirst.

Kvass. In addition to the fact that natural kvass quenches thirst well, it is also satisfying, as it contains amino acids and carbon dioxide. Just read the ingredients of the product carefully. Bottled carbonated kvass, which contains flavorings and preservatives, will not bring absolutely any benefit to your body.

Mineral water. Thanks to the salts and biologically active substances contained in the mineral water, it ranks second in terms of its ability to quench thirst. In addition, it relieves fatigue and refreshes. And to quickly get rid of thirst, throw some sour berries or a slice of lemon into the mineral water.

Tea. This drink is the leader in its ability to quench thirst (by the way, it takes a third less than water to get drunk). The temperature of tea does not matter, it can be drunk both cold and hot. And tea also contains vitamin P, it helps to strengthen the walls of blood vessels.

Compotes, juices, fruit drinks. Fruit drinks from fresh berries quench thirst well. There are a lot of minerals and vitamins in fruit drink, it refreshes and improves the digestion process. Only it is better to cook it not concentrated. As for juices, it is better to drink them freshly squeezed and diluted with water. They are more useful than store-bought ones and are also absorbed faster. Compotes quench thirst worse, as they contain a lot of sugar. The exceptions are compotes, cooked with a minimum amount of sugar or without it at all. It is better to drink compote cold and diluted small.

Dairy drinks. All fermented milk products (ryazhenka, kefir, curdled milk) perfectly quench your thirst. And unlike milk, they are digested faster. In addition, all types of fermented milk products can be consumed with vegetables, fruits and berries. However, in extreme heat, it is better to refuse their use. Since both milk and dairy products are perishable and can cause various intestinal disorders.

And here is a list of the least healthy drinks to quench your thirst on hot days.

Coffee gives a load on the vessels and the heart. And an overabundance of this drink can even cause dehydration.

Various sweet sodas. It is enough to read the composition of this cocktail of dyes, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners to understand that this drink will not bring any benefit to the body, especially in the heat.

Beer will also provide your heart and blood vessels with an additional load. Therefore, it is also better to refrain from it or, in extreme cases, drink no more than a glass a day.

About strong alcohol, as you understand, it is unnecessary to mention. Everyone already understands that it puts a tremendous strain on blood vessels and the heart, especially in hot weather, and can pose a serious threat to the health of even a very strong person.

When drinking certain drinks, thirst recedes only for a while, and then again makes itself felt with renewed vigor. TOWhen it's pretty hot outsidethirst quenching drinksvery much in demand.

Thirst quenching drinks

  • The universal and most effective remedy for combating thirst is ordinary drinking water. It quenches thirst better than others, allows you to replenish fluid loss and at the same time contains no calories at all. On a hot day, you can carry a bottle of water with you and drink it in small sips throughout the day.
  • You can drink in the heat and lemonade but only natural. It consists of two simple ingredients: water and lemon juice (pieces of fruit are added if desired). However, you can add a little natural syrup or honey to natural lemonade.
  • Tea is a very effective remedy for eliminating thirst. Quenching your thirst with tea, you also make up for the loss of trace elements. Tea helps to strengthen blood vessels and normalize the processes of thermoregulation in the body. Mint, lemon, apple and other fruits or berries can be added to homemade iced tea.
  • : fermented milk products contain organic acids that quench thirst well. In addition, all of them are quickly absorbed: in an hour, kefir, for example, is absorbed almost completely, while milk is only a third.
  • Like kefir, a real classic kvass is a product of double fermentation (lactic acid), only prepared from other raw materials. The thirst-quenching properties in kvass are also determined by lactic acid. Its action is enhanced by the presence of carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide). Unfortunately, fakes are common on the market, which are drinks prepared on the basis of artificial ingredients without the use of double fermentation technology.
  • Fresh juices saturated with vitamins. However, when using them, you need to know a simple rule - it is not recommended to drink more than two glasses of freshly squeezed juice per day. According to the recommendations of nutritionists, freshly squeezed juices generally belong to food. In this regard, it is still not worth considering them as a full-fledged remedy for combating thirst.
  • Morse or compote. These drinks will only help quench your thirst if you make them with as little sugar as possible. Morse or compote from fresh fruits, berries or dried fruits is easy to prepare at home.

Thirst does not quench:

  • Soda. Due to the content of a large amount of sugar, thirst only intensifies, and plus, you get empty calories, which lead to weight gain. Carbonated mineral water is also not recommended for thirst quenching.
  • Coffee. This drink has a tonic effect and removes fluid from the body. Therefore, to quench your thirst, you should not drink coffee and cold drinks based on it.

Summer will come very soon, and we all really hope that it will be warm and sunny. Due to the abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and berries, we can diversify our diet with very healthy dishes and drinks. In this article, you will find out which drinks quench your thirst more effectively on hot days.

How much liquid can you drink

In hot periods, when the air temperature exceeds +25 degrees, the daily intake of liquid drunk is up to 3 liters. But whether it is necessary to exceed this norm, it is worth considering, because excess water in the body can be reflected in edema, too much stress on the kidneys.

Children's daily allowance: up to 40 ml of liquid per 1 kg of body weight. It's no secret that kids love sugary drinks more. With their increased consumption - dilute with water.

In the morning and afternoon, drink most of the liquid, and in the evening and at night, try to reduce your consumption of drinks.

Top 5 Drinks That Quench Your Thirst

1st place - green tea. To get rid of thirst, you need to drink 1/3 less of this miraculous drink than water. In our case, replacing green tea with black will not work. Only cool green tea will save you in the heat, thanks to the tannins that it contains, as a result of which the absorption of fluid from the intestines slows down. Just do not be zealous, you should not drink more than 8 cups of tea per day.

2nd place - water. It perfectly refreshes, increases appetite and can even relieve fatigue and lethargy of the body. If the water seems tasteless, add a slice of lemon or grapefruit to the glass. This will make the drink even healthier. Another solution would be mineral water, which contains the necessary trace elements. Speaking of an unlimited amount of mineral water, I mean, first of all, the dining room. And the use of medicinal or medicinal-table mineral waters must be controlled. If you have no contraindications (gastritis or stomach ulcer), choose sparkling water. Because the carbon dioxide in the mouth causes increased salivation and quenches thirst faster.

3rd place - dairy products. Choose whatever your heart desires: kefir, ayran, fermented baked milk, yogurt, curdled milk, etc. All of the listed drinks quench thirst well, are quickly absorbed (by 91% in 1 hour), and also have a therapeutic effect on the body. Any of the above drinks can be diluted with fruits, berries, vegetables in accordance with personal taste preferences.

4th place - natural juices and fruit drinks. Juices from tomato, cherry, grapefruit, plum, cherry plum effectively quench thirst. What can not be said about juices with pulp. The nutritional value of the latter is higher, but it is better to refuse them as thirst-quenching drinks. This also applies to nectars made from concentrate. Morse will quench your thirst and give beauty to your hair, nails, skin, contribute to a good mood. We are talking only about natural juices and drinks, and there are not so many of them on the shelves.

5th place - kvass. Real, classic kvass is a good thirst quencher due to the carbon dioxide it contains, as well as amino acids. The composition of the right kvass contains sourdough, grain, sugar and water. There are no dyes or sweeteners. And in carbonated kvass from real kvass there is only a smell, and then only its imitation.

Drinks that are useless in quenching thirst

  1. Soda (aka "lemonade"). The reason for the negative impact is the huge amount of sugar contained in soda. It increases thirst, and besides, it contributes to weight gain. And, of course, it’s not even worth talking about flavor enhancers and additives.
  2. Coffee. The function of this drink in the first place is to tone up, it perfectly removes fluid from the body. That is why, to get rid of thirst, coffee and all drinks based on it are the wrong choice.
  3. Beer. The thing is that beer is not able to quench thirst, because the components that make up its composition cause dehydration and we want to drink even more. But if you still inexorably want to taste beer, do it in the evening, choosing light varieties and a strength of no more than 4.5 degrees.
  4. Drinks with ice. In the heat, we want something colder, completely forgetting about the risk of catching a cold due to very cold drinks.
