Captain Salazar Pirates of the Caribbean who plays. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

The Pirate Trilogy caribbean I really love. But let me, you say, because there were four films before the last one! Yes, there was something, but the fourth part ... But, by the way, everything is in order. It is unlikely that my review will be of interest to those who are simply looking for information on whether to watch or not to watch this film, there are more emotions and questions ... A lot of questions.

********************************
So, I settled on the fact that I love the trilogy. Everything was there for me: story line from the first film to the third, really bright and memorable characters, each of which has Charisma with huge letter. What villain was Becket from the second and third films? After all, he never even took out a sword, but how much hatred he caused! As they say, nothing personal)) And most importantly, what always clung to me was cool intellectual dialogues. Do you remember it?

-I'm going to requisition the brig to rob for the needs of my black soul.

It's just a song! Although, of course, there is a lot of merit of translators here, but still ...

The fourth part completely killed all the romance. Indistinct Blackbeard, even more indistinct Penelope Cruz, the only bright memory is the love of a priest and a mermaid, and even then it ended ambiguously.

I read a lot about the fifth part in advance, including on this site, and in vain. I went to the movies with expectations, and not the best, and maybe that's why I got great pleasure from viewing.

It’s impossible to write about the plot here, unfortunately, because it’s a spoiler, but I’ll say that compared to the previous THREE parts, it’s a bit primitive...

Like many here, I will not find fault with the unrealistic nature of what is happening on the screen. After we were shown the kraken, Davy Jones with tentacles on his face and living skeletons that only become so in moonlight, it is foolish to find fault with the fact that the bank followed the horses so easily along the road. Don't quibble, it's not historical chronicle. But there were a couple of moments for which the writers wanted to give a hand:

1. After defeating Salazar, Jack is given his captain's uniform, including a hat and trinkets and ... One of the nine pirate pesos that will then appear in the third part (fuck my brain). But excuse me, how did he then know about its purpose? I thought it should have been arranged more tragically and symbolically, like an old pirate dies and puts a peso in Jack's hand ... And here on you, they folded it and did not explain it. Cant?

2. What a ridiculous island wedding? It seems that the screenwriter swelled up and wrote some kind of nonsense into the plot, and those who then claimed this something did not read this far and approved it as it was. Some man and his daughter were sitting on the island and waiting for the groom to sail. State?

3. Misunderstandings with a compass generally kill. You can argue about this for a long time, but it’s better not to do this, otherwise the film fades before our eyes from every argument.

Now for the characters.

1. Jack.

Here again, many find fault here, they say, why Jack is always drunk. But it seems to me that everything is very logical, because they say that luck turned away from him, and it has passed from the moment last movie about five years (according to Barbossa). In my opinion, Jack, with his eccentric character and illogical actions, was just going to drink himself and sink to the bottom. And it was precisely when he was at the bottom that he decided to part with the compass, there was no other way.

2. Captain Salazar.

No matter what anyone says, the role is not for Bardem. Yes, anyone could be taken here, there would be no difference. Javier is too good actor, and Salazar - too no. What annoyed me the most was the lack of motivation. You see, he killed pirates, and in the end one of them defeated him in a fair fight. ALL! From the trailer, I assumed that the insult and the inflicted insult are much cooler, but here ... Yes, Salazar is just an offended woman, not a man. Yes, even if Sparrow spit in his borscht, I would understand, but .... And what a face he did, and how he ran across all the seas for Sparrow! Yes, none of the villains before did not allow themselves to rush after Jack like that, no dignity, honestly. And what the hell is with his hair? Why do they live their lives? It's, like, they swayed like that under his water, and then they didn't stop their movement?

3. Turner Jr. and Karina Smith.

Get the kids off the screen. I don't know how old they are, but they play like children. And there's nothing more to say.

4. Barbossa.

That Awkward moment when your favorite character is dishonored, but you are ashamed. What? Margaret Smith? Spanish shame, by God. I did not expect this from Barbossa. And his act at the end... Couldn't you have figured it out differently, without this unnecessary heroism?

5. Separately, I would like to say about the witch - that painted bald madam. What is this character anyway? Now, if it were not for her, the film would not have been a success, yeah ...

Well, the movie is good overall. No, really, it's not bad. With humor, of course, it became a bit tight, not the previous sparkling trilogy, but I didn’t regret at all that I went, for me it’s definitely better than the previous indistinct “masterpiece”.

At the end touched on New film, where without it.

Fans of the franchise should definitely watch it. The film is full of little references to the previous parts, little jokes that those who, like me, don't understand previous films by heart, but for me they are the main humor of the film.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Budget: $230M, Global gross: $794M

Cheeky and fun. But the death of a noble
Dona Salazar upset me beyond measure.

New girl with Armenian name Karina is good new boyfriend, to be honest, none (this is how it was conceived, the trend is like this, starting with "Avatar": on determined females, slowing down infantile males).
Sparrow is really gay here - and if it goes on like this, he will come out in the next part ...

One big two-hour anachronism. In the era of iPhones and vapes, no one needs this anymore - neither the audience, nor the directors, nor the studio, nor the ensemble itself.

Milady had a big-faced son - and the romantic Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) from Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) also had a son named Henry (Brenton Thwaites) from somewhere. A simple calculation shows that Elizabeth gave birth to a boy at the age of about four years (Will was already twelve at that time) - 18 years before meeting Will - but Will does not care about such trifles: the main thing here is - there is a son, so there will be someone in old age to save Will from the damned service in the MES hospital, well, that is, on the Flying Dutchman, where Will is found recent years ten. Henry firmly promised his father that he would save him from the curse of either the Black Pearl or the Dead Man's Chest, and for this he would have to get the Source eternal youth Trident of Poseidon, with which you can remove all curses in a crowd at once. After that, Henry serves modestly and responsibly in the British Merchant Marine and some time later, when his ship visits the Devil's Triangle, he is honored with a meeting with the long-dead, but still energetic captain Armand Salazar (Javier Bardem), who - well, of course - has their scores with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Captain Salazar is currently unable to leave the Devil's Triangle, so he politely asks Henry to seek out Jack Sparrow and convey to him from him, the captain, greetings, and with all my might. Henry seeks out the captain, who is busy with his usual drunkenness and adventures, and persuades him to go in search of the Trident of Poseidon, especially since Jack Sparrow exchanged Magic Compass for "yo-ho-ho" and a bottle of rum, so now nothing keeps Don Salazar in the Devil's triangle and he is ready to end piracy as a class. Judging by the shift in focus to the sons-daughters of key characters, we are witnessing the promised "soft restart" of the franchise. As part of the Turner team, there was a replacement for Henry, Karina Hektorovna Smith (Kaya Scodelario) now stands for the female team - a cavalry girl, astronomer, physicist, chemist, athlete, Komsomol member, and, of course, a witch, because in those days everyone is cute ladies who knew how to UNDERSTAND were considered witches. I must say that the new couple is noticeably inferior to the old team: to be honest, I didn’t really believe in the militancy of the character of Keira Knightley, but the impulsive and romantic Will looked very good in the first ten to twenty films of the franchise. But Henry, performed by Australian actor Brenton Thwaites, is about nothing at all: no charisma, no romance, no militancy, no sincere interest in Karina Hektorovna. Runs back and forth, unconvincingly portrays militancy and the desire to really find the Poseidon battle pitchforks - in general, this is not a soft restart of the franchise, this is a complete epic fail. Here is Karina Hektorovna, played by the British actress Kaya Scodelario, she is much more cheerful and more combative, and I liked this character noticeably more than the rather amorphous Elizabeth, who only portrayed combativeness, in which the cat Bublik and I did not believe her, sorry, not for nine grams. True, they obviously went too far with Karina with the now fashionable feminist motives - it looked rather strained and in the end even began to tire - but the actress herself played her role with a twinkle, and here I categorically disagree with those who considered her character dull under become Henry. Henry is dull, yes, and Karina is cheerful and energetic. When you look at her, beautiful poems immediately come to mind, I quote: Karina wants a tangerine
Karina wants a melon
For chocolate, for orange
Karina will take out the soul.
Karina often wants to eat
What is not at home
I'm ready to give it all -
I love this chick!
But, by the way, we all understand that they are not the main characters of the picture. Even in times of effervescence between Will and Elizabeth, who was the main character in the franchise films? That's right, freak captain Jack Sparrow, whom Johnny Depp molded in the image and likeness of God's wonderful creation named Keith Richards, may Paul McCartney keep him in defiance of Mick Jagger. Jack Sparrow became somewhat dull, and it was the most unfortunate, in my opinion , part, but everything was fun again with Sparrow, and I realized that the franchise is still not hopeless. In the new film, Jack Sparrow is quite in place and fooling around with the same enthusiasm. He absolutely remarkably alcoholics, hooligans, commits wild acts and in general - diligently runs into the fact that they chop off his head, but we know very well that Sparrow is immortal, because who with his own hands will kill a painted golden pirate that brings so much money, right ? So Bagel the Cat and I weren't really worried about old Jack's life, but we were pretty amused by his antics. The new character - the dead captain Salazar - is a dramatic and tragic figure. And the cat Bublik and I really didn’t like the way the writers of the picture decided on his fate. For some reason, they made Glavgad out of Salazar, and after all, Salazar is a real ascetic, a hero! After all, Captain Salazar fought the pirates who killed his father and grandfather. This great person he swore to himself to kill all this vile pirate seed in the bud - and he would have done it if he hadn’t run into a very young, but already very cunning Jack Sparrow, who then still hardly drank and was capable of various tricks. Turning a huge ship on the move with ropes thrown over stones is a truly diabolical move, no less spectacular than a similar move, which similarly eluded pirates to deliver a load of hemp and blubber. But here this trick was portrayed by young Jack Sparrow, after which the beautiful captain Salazar remained in the Devil's Triangle for many years, being already almost completely dead, and most of the people of his team lost many parts and pieces of their body. Of course, Salazar wants to take revenge on Jack Sparrow: because of this future drunk and rogue, Don Salazar could not rid the Caribbean of pirates. And now it won’t save you, because Jack Sparrow will surely find Poseidon’s Pitchfork by stepping on the Argolis Rake, this thing will cancel all sea curses, Captain Salazar’s team will gain flesh and blood, but not for long, because few people manage to survive meetings with Jack Sparrow in this franchise. And our hearts with the cat Bagel were filled with sadness. Amen. What is it, demanding children will ask, with special effects? Yes, it's pretty good, in my opinion. The theft of the safe (hello), the fragmentary team of Don Salazar and Salazar himself with his constantly fluttering, as it were, from water hair, the revival of the "Black Pearl" with excellent jokes, a very funny scene of an unsuccessful execution, naval battles, land battles, water-sliding battles and flights through the water column towards free air - all this is fun, provocatively and spectacularly. And that the plot here is built exclusively according to patterns, and for a soft reboot, a couple didn’t spill any chemistry in themselves, but generally seemed like a brother and sister - well, the patterns of the fourth part are still quite decent, because, for example, in

Armando Salazar - during his lifetime was an ardent pirate hunter who administered his justice on the Seven Seas in the 18th century. Salazar is a Spaniard by nationality, served in the Royal Navy and later became the captain of a powerful ship. "Silent Mary". Armando was also known by the nickname El Matador del Mar.

It would seem that there was no limit to the limit of his cruel, and, no less important, successful justice that overtook the pirates. But everything changed dramatically when the young man managed to outwit the brave officer and lure him into a supernatural trap in which Armando Salazar, along with his team, had to be imprisoned in the guise of ghosts for a long time. Not forgetting such a strong humiliation, after a while, Armando Salazar got out of the damned Triangle, in which he was imprisoned, and went in search of an artifact called the Trident of Poseidon. Salazar's goal is to continue his mission to cleanse the world of pirates, and, of course, in the first place, to take revenge on Jack Sparrow.

Pirate hunting

Captain Salazar, as already mentioned, served in the Spanish Royal Navy. Moving quickly along career ladder, he received many awards and soon became the captain of a warship. Captain Salazar vowed to exterminate all pirates inhabiting the Seven Seas. The reason for such hatred for sailors was family tragedy: Salazar's father and grandfather were sent to the next world by pirates. In his vendetta to filibusters, he became so successful that they began to say that Armando sent more than one thousand sailors to the next world, sowing unimaginable horror among them.

Once, Captain Armando Salazar attacked a pirate fleet of almost a dozen ships and, despite his minority, coolly and skillfully destroyed one ship after another, not giving mercy even to those who tried to capitulate under a white flag.. As a result, the last remaining ship in the pirate fleet became fatal for Salazar. Blinded by his hatred, he fell for the trick of the young Sparrow, who served on one of those pirate ships, and allowed himself to be lured into a trap shrouded in dark forces, death from the explosion in which did not give the pirate hunter peace at all. Armando Salazar and his team became something like terrible ghosts and were forced to be imprisoned in that Devil's Triangle for 30 years.

The fifth part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was richly stuffed with jokes. But many of the jokes in this series are references to other episodes and subtle Easter eggs. Or not very thin.

We've covered some of them, but beware - spoilers.

1. Mini-prequel to the entire franchise

Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, utters the line "Dead Men Tell No Tales" in the title of the film. But we've heard it before in " Curse of the Black Pearl", where the parrot said it, as well as in the film" On the edge of the world" - nothing new. But further we learn how Captain Jack Sparrow got his nickname, hat, compass and accessories that became part of his recognizable style.

2. Kraken doesn't talk

When Henry Turner, son of Will Turner, responds to the skeptical Karina Smith "The Kraken doesn't talk" is a direct reference to the movie " Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest where Will survived the kraken attack. And Henry definitely heard this story from his father and definitely believed in it. By the way, Salazar's ship in attack mode is damn similar to a kraken and should also stink: "the smell of a thousand rotting corpses," according to the contents.

3. Monkey and One Piece

This little easter egg became known even before the release of the film. One of the Reddit users, whose relative was involved in the production of the picture, that Hector Barbossa's monkey will be dressed in an outfit similar to the clothes of Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the manga " one piece. Big jackpot."

4. New rock star

It's no secret that Johnny Depp has a soft spot for rock stars. Back in the first film, he borrowed elements of the image of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards for his outfit, and then helped him play the role of Jack's father, Captain Teague, in the films "At World's End" and " On strange shores". And in the new film, Paul McCartney got the tiny role of Uncle Jack, also at the suggestion of the actor.

5. Jack's least favorite joke

Jack's uncle tells a joke that Sparrow has long disliked: "A skeleton comes into a bar and says, 'I'll have a beer and a mop.' And he is indignant because he does not understand what is funny in him. This is a cool joke by Depp, who disliked and did not understand this joke since the time of the movie " Donnie Brasco»: Al Pacino told her on the set. 6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

But it is not exactly. Considering that Orlando Bloom played some of the main roles in the franchises " Lord of the Rings" And " Pirates of the Caribbean”, fans have long been looking for a connection between their worlds. And here's some new fuel for controversy: Carina Smith is "not a husband" who can solve the map, and in The Return of the King it was Éowyn who killed the Witch-king of Angmar... whom no husband can kill!

7. Popeye the Sailor

The cartoon character from the thirties of the last century loved spinach and the song "I'm Popeye the Sailor", which, judging by the film, Hector Barbossa also loved. His musicians were playing this tune just before the pirate received word of Salazar's approaching ship.

8. Historical reference

For the first time in the entire franchise, you can roughly figure out what year this picture takes place. When Captain Jack Sparrow is graciously offered to choose his own execution, the British soldiers mention the newfangled French guillotine, and Jack settles on it because he loves the French who invented mayonnaise. Firstly, the guillotine was first used in 1792, and secondly, it is a subtle barb, to confess to the British in love with the French ...

"Pirates of the Caribbean": How the image of Captain Salazar was created.
Elena Bozhkova, 09/08/2017.

The visuals in the new Pirates of the Caribbean game are impressive again, with ghost sharks and ships devouring each other. But two things cause the most enthusiasm among specialists and in the press: the scene where the hero of Johnny Depp is shown 25 years younger and the view of Captain Salazar with his ocean hairdo and a team of ghosts.

As for the first one, this technique is often referred to as “digital rejuvenation”. According to Bustle, it began to be used to some extent about 10 years ago, for example, in the 2006 film X-Men: last fight" And " Misterious story Benjamin Button" 2008. Most often, this is done by the Lola VFX studio. The technique is becoming more and more popular, especially the Disney studio loves to use it. By the way, in the same material Bustle shows examples from other films where “actor rejuvenation” was done.

And journalists from the British Independent discussed working on visual effects with MPC (Moving Picture Company) VFX supervisors Gary Brozenich and Sheldon Stopsak. Gary joined the work at a very early stage, when the concept was still being worked out, and Sheldon - a year later.

“I interacted with directors every day during pre-production and production. During post-production, I was in Los Angeles, then Montreal, and then London, helping to complete everything. During this period, we called each other at least every day for three years, ”Gary Brozenich said in an interview.
In his opinion, the film managed to strike a balance between real and digital effects. “ Practical side was very important. The costumes, make-up of Salazar and his crew were real. We did a replacement or supplemented something. Hopefully some of the things we did the audience will never notice.”
According to him, the most difficult thing for the team was to create a team of ghosts, their appearance and Captain Salazar himself. All the things that happened under water - flying hair, for example, were very difficult to do. Not to mention large volumes of water, open oceans and supernatural phenomena like the tomb of Poseidon.

The hero of Javier Bardem - quite often appears on the screen in the film. And everything would be fine, but most On screen time, it looks like it's under water.
His appearance is the result of applying different technologies: make-up on film set, blue screen and tracking markers. And also the huge work of the Moving Picture Company studio in removing and replacing facial features, simulating hair and clothes.
According to Cartoon Brew, who spoke to Patrick Ledda, a visual effects studio, Salazar's transformation began during filming on Australia's Gold Coast. The actor wore tracking markers and swept his hair back - then they were completely replaced with CG hair. Then sculptural make-up was applied to him for hours. And to leave empty seats", which MPC "filled in" later, the makeup included bits of "blue screen".

“On set, Bardem and his crew acted like they were in slow motion, like they were underwater,” Ledda explained. At the same time, they wore parts of costumes, sometimes with tracking details. gray color. MPC then added to them during post-production.

First, the studio had to work with rotoscopic animation of Bardem and other actors to track and correlate their movements. “When we finished it, we applied digital suits on top, torn and burned in many places,” Ledda said. “Then our technical animators got involved: they added simulations of clothes and hair and the very feeling of being underwater.”
When it came to CG Salazar's hair, MPC faced two challenges. The first was that any simulation had to correlate with the actual movements of the actor on the set, and he generally moved in real time. And the second - the hair had to look like it was under water, which usually gives a slowdown. I had to find the right decision, but which would be possible to change in different frames.

After several trials, the studio found the right approach - it allowed the artists to make a physically correct simulation of the hair and “comb” it with their special Furtility tool, but at the same time retain control over it from a creative point of view, that is, to position the hair in certain frames so that as they needed. “If we wanted the hair to fall over the nose or the hair to fall back, we could put it there. Our simulation took this position into account and gently moved the hair from frame to frame, almost as if it were some kind of field or current that guides them through keyframes,” Ledda explains.

Salazar's hairstyle was made up of normal and damaged hair, plus a few dreadlocks. The latter behaved differently under water, but on the whole it was all intertwined and tangled into many knots.

Another difficult but interesting challenge was to maintain continuity. “ Usually animators work with 3-4 frames at the same time, where we can see how the character moves for a certain period. But in this case because the animation was more technical, it wasn't that piece-oriented."

“The difference here is that all these hair simulations had to go through many frames. After all, if the strand is on the left in the previous frame, obviously, it should be there in the next one. This is quite difficult - in the case of hair, too many “glues” could come out. Making a simulation that lasts 20 frames and making sure it looks convincing is definitely a big challenge for us,” said Ledda.

And MPC Supervisor Gary Brozenich, in an interview with the Independent, summed up the huge amount of work that has been done:

“In the process of work, you are busy solving current problems. Of course, it's scary if something doesn't work out. But the process is becoming more and more perfect every time and the quality of our work is growing. But so are the requirements. But in general, yes, when you look back and look at the result, you think: “God, I can’t believe we made it!”
