The puppet theater was officially founded on October 1, 1963 by two enthusiasts, whose names were Taisiya and Vladimir Pavlov. They were pupils of the famous director-puppeteer, whose name is Evgeny Demmeni. This actor, director, Honored Artist of the RSFSR was known throughout the Soviet Union. He was the first Russian professional puppet director, one of the founders of the Soviet puppet theater. He was also engaged in pedagogical work and brought up more than one generation of puppeteers. It is not surprising that it was his students who became members of the first Pskov troupe of the puppet theater, which existed long before the official opening date of the theater. They were graduates of the studio under the guidance of E.V. Demmeni at the Leningrad Puppet Theatre. After the end of the Second World War, in 1945, the graduates united in a troupe and staged their first performances.

However, the theater did not have its own premises for a long time. At first, it was located in the premises of the Pskov Drama Theater, then - in the concert and variety bureau. In 1950 the theater was disbanded. There were no performances for three years. And in 1953 the performances resumed. Three of the artists of the old troupe joined the new one.

In 1963, the theater finally found its own premises and moved to the Batov House. In this building, an architectural monument of the early 20th century of federal significance, the theater is still located. It was built at the end of the 17th century and initially belonged to the Pskov merchants Trubinsky. The building consisted of several buildings, and was one-story. Then it was combined into a single room and a second floor was added. At the beginning of the 20th century, Batov became the owner, under which there was a prayer house. During this period, significant rebuilding was carried out and another two-story building was added. These two adjoining buildings form an obtuse angle, and the building is L-shaped from the north, and rectangular from the south. The different styles of both cases harmonize well with each other. The northern building is decorated in the late provincial modernist style, while the southern facade is dominated by features of classicism and the early Italian Renaissance. The theater is located in the northern part of the ensemble.

In almost 50 years of the official existence of the puppet theater, many directors have changed. Among them were residents of Pskov, and those who came from other cities. But almost each of them left behind at least one performance, which entered the golden treasury of the theater, among them - V.A. Kholin, F.Z. Feinshtein, V.G. Miodushevsky, A.A. Veselov, A.A. Zabolotny and many others.

At the end of the 20th - beginning of the 21st century, the Pskov Puppet Theater achieved particular success and achieved a certain fame both in Russia and abroad. The theater participated in many national and foreign theater competitions, repeatedly became their laureate. Today, the puppet theater is headed by the director, Honored Artist of Russia, laureate of the Golden Mask national theater award, Yevgeny Bondarenko. 9 puppeteers work under his leadership.

Recently, it has become a kind of tradition to celebrate the day of the puppeteer and to hold an annual master class for children on the acting skills of the puppeteer, timed to coincide with this holiday. It is held by the theater director together with his artists, who teach children how to handle puppets and share the secrets of their work.

There has always been room for innovation in the work of the director and artists of the Pskov Puppet Theater. Wandering artists with performances of "The Wonderful and Sad Stories of Doctor Faust" traveled around medieval European cities with great success. In Pskov, there are few places for children to move in winter, but there is a puppet theater, and, as it is believed, it is not even bad. And suddenly I was torn to start walking into it. Or rather, it didn’t hit me, but Maxim reminded me that I once promised to take tickets there. The hall is small, and therefore quite sincere, although unusual: there are no seats on the tickets, and there are actually no seats in the hall, there are rows of sofas. Aunty controller, launching the audience, warns about the seating rules:

the first two rows are for children only;

children with their parents sit on the next rows, children can be taken on their knees, or they can be planted next to them on specially provided cushions;

rear and side seats - purely for accompanying parents.

Despite the lack of a clear system and fixed places, it does without conflicts and confusion. The aunt-controller separately monitors this: gently but persistently asks to change seats if someone sat in the wrong place, or personally finds a place for the child, who was brought to the very beginning when the hall was already full.

But, of course, you need to understand that with this approach, if you need a special seating arrangement, say, you brought several children, and you want them to definitely sit together, or it’s important for you to seat yours in the first row in the center, then you need to come early. And if it doesn’t matter, then at least three minutes before the third call, your child will be attached.

Launch starts 20 minutes before the start of the performance. By this time, a queue is already forming at the doors to the hall. Before the beginning, so that the children are less furious, they are given children's songs. True, with especially cheerful motives and peppy neighbors, this sometimes leads to the opposite result :)

Watching a performance
The performance lasts 35-45 minutes, plus the time that will pass from the moment of seating to the beginning (15 minutes).
In fact, it can be seen from any place (except for the side ones, where the columns can stir), because the puppets operate behind a full-length "screen", so the audience does not look straight ahead, but slightly up.

The performances are different. And funny screams for kids, and lyrics for older children, and purely puppet ones, and those where adult actors are involved, and even those where puppeteers appear in front of the audience with their puppets. As a rule, the usual plots, especially those that are shorter, are slightly diluted with “gag”, so that a preliminary acquaintance with the work based on which the performance is staged, as a rule, does not interfere with the children, but rather helps: it helps to highlight the main line and check it out inserts.

Predicting what a child will remember from a performance seems to be a thankless task. For someone, the main plot, for someone - a balloon bursting in the course of action :)
