The story tells of a young man named Saitama, who lives in a world ironically similar to ours. He is 25, bald and handsome, and, moreover, so strong that with one blow he can annihilate all dangers to humanity. He is looking for himself in a difficult way life path, simultaneously handing out slaps to monsters and villains.

Genre/style:
Based on the synopsis, you may think that this is a mystical detective story with fantasy elements. However, such a conclusion would be very premature; in the course of events, the authors often change both the genre of the story and the manner of narration. There will be both a classic adventure and romance novel, and comedy, and even heavy psychedelia a la Evangelion. All this is flavored with very high-quality humor, good fight scenes, as well as good old violence. No, there is no dismemberment in the anime, the “camera” doesn’t focus on it, but there is plenty of blood and off-screen mutilation. In general, authors do not stand on ceremony with characters, fortunately the main character’s special ability allows it. When events quietly and peacefully take their course, and then instantly explode with action, it’s especially pleasant.
However, such a palette of genres also has its drawback, which I would probably call the main one. Firstly, due to the extremely intriguing start The first third of the anime is much more interesting to watch than the rest. Secondly, having built up suspense in certain places, the authors then changed the narrative style so dramatically that I could only look at the screen in bewilderment and scratch my head.
Separately, I note that in Re:zero there is anime fan service in the form of cute characters, mega-pathos moments and ultra-emotional monologues and the like, but in moderation, so it is practically not annoying. Honestly, some dialogues are completely surprising in their depth, if, of course, you are imbued with the moment. And finally, in anime there are no these stupid scenes with exaggeratedly simplified drawing of characters, I don’t know what they call it, and their absence personally made me very happy. It’s nice when authors are able to make jokes in dialogue or by ironizing clichés, but not like that.
Characters:
Perhaps the characters are one of the most important aspects of Re:zero. There are not very many of them, and almost everyone gives their (sometimes unexpected) contribution to the plot. There are practically no extra characters, and those that exist it seems that they simply did not have time to reveal them, leaving them for the second season (I repeat, I am not familiar with the original). Despite the fact that many of the characters themselves are clichés (the misfit boy, the “protagonist’s girlfriend,” the angry loli, the cheerful magical spirit, the noble knight, the cruel and sexy killer, stern warrior etc., etc.), the authors managed to make them charming. I won’t describe it in more detail so as not to spoil it, but I’ll say a few words about the main character.
Natsuke Subaru really surprised me. Considering that the character is a double cliché - an idiot and a loser - the authors unexpectedly managed to create a really interesting, lively hero. As a rule, this type of character either causes nausea with its constant “nobility” with a complete lack of abilities, or they become hysterical and scream for no reason, or commit stupid things simply because they are "good" characters. Or all together. And at the same time, they always come to success, because that’s how it’s supposed to be. Subaru is capable of both showing courage and ingenuity, and also making a mistake or saying too much when circumstances lead to exactly this. Thanks to the common sense of the authors.
Add to this the fact that most of the jokes come from him, and you have one of the best main characters of this type of anime in recent years.
Pros/cons:
The advantages include a good plot and characters, high-quality humor and action, pleasing to the eye art, and a minimum of annoying fan service. Special thanks to the authors for Archbishop Petelgeuse and AniDub for his voice acting. My brain is fluttering.
Among the minuses, I called an excessive mixture of genres and styles and too much difference in the intrigue of the plot between the beginning of the anime and the rest. I’ll probably add one more thing: forgetting about nuances and small details. That is, the authors intrigue the viewer with some small detail that the viewer notices, but cannot explain at the moment, A then then they just forget about it. It looks like several guns hanging on the wall that never fire at the end of the performance. And, in principle, there are no more objective disadvantages.
Verdict:
Re:zero, in my personal opinion subjective opinion, it was worth keeping it completely in the style of a mystical detective, that is, in the style of the first third of the anime, focusing the viewer on the atmosphere of this world and manner of narration, as well as intriguing riddles and omissions. However, putting aside subjectivity, we can say that the authors have produced a very, very suitable product, strictly recommended for viewing.
I would like to compare it with something similar, so that it would be easier for a potential viewer to decide to watch, but this is impossible due to the kaleidoscope of genres used. We can say that this is a mixture of SAO and Steins;Gate with a large share original content.
But if it were possible to replay everything, rewind time and again face a choice, only knowing what would happen if you set foot on one path or another... Beautiful fairy tale, isn't it?! Only in real world this simply cannot happen, but the characters from the anime “Life in alternative world”, often encounter this, although some of them do not quite understand what is happening. Well, it's time to get acquainted!
Emilia's minions
The anime Zero: Starting Up in an Alternate World features many characters. And since the plot in the fantasy world involves elections for the new head of the kingdom, it is easiest to imagine the heroes according to their party affiliation. So, Emilia’s camp includes:
- Emilia- one of the candidates for the throne. Half-elf, masters the magic of the four elements. Because of external resemblance she is often confused with the witch of Envy Sattela, so she has no close friends, and she herself tries to stay away from people.
- Subaru Natsuki - he is also the main character of the anime “Life in an Alternative World from Scratch”. A character who can only boast of a good knowledge of video games. He is not confident in his abilities and regrets that he is wasting his time so aimlessly, but he hides it behind impulsiveness and narcissism, which is why he constantly gets into trouble. It's good that after death you can always come back.
- Pak - the spirit with whom Emilia made a pact. Looks like a gray cat with blue eyes, helps the girl in battles.
Later, a merchant with earth magic, Otto Suven, joined Emilia's camp, as well as Gerfiel Tinsel, brother of Frederica Baumann, who worked as a maid in the Roswaal mansion. Speaking of Roswaal: he plays an important role in the anime. Roswaal L. Mathers is one of the most powerful magicians in the empire, and is a member of the council of elders. Emilia's guardian. But even she has her supporters: Al, or Aldebaran (this is how Priscilla addresses him), is a knight and the candidate’s trustee. He is dressed like a robber and wears a helmet at all times.
Such a character from “Life in an Alternative World from Scratch” as Felt deserves no less interest. In the second part of the anime, she is presented as a candidate for the throne, although in the first episodes she was usually a girl thief from the slums. It was she who stole the sign from Emilia, and when she returned it, the knight of the imperial army, Reinhard van Astrea, noticed the slight glow of the badge in Felt’s hand. It later turned out that she was the fifth princess kidnapped as a child. She is supported by Reinhard, the most famous knight of the kingdom and a good-natured man to look for, as well as Old Man Rom, a half-giant. It was he who found Felt in the slums, gave her a name and took care of her all the time. She perceives him as a grandfather.
Creepy horror
Anime can be considered Elsa Granhirt. This is a killer who obsessively releases the entrails of her enemies. Subaru and Emilia meet her at the very beginning when they are trying to return the signia. Another villain who can truly be described as "creepy creepy" is the archbishop of the witch cult - Petelgeuse Romane-Conti, who personifies the sin of Sloth. He talks while taking strange poses, can take over other people’s bodies without losing his abilities, and his magical ability “Invisible Hand” has killed more than a dozen warriors.
The storyline of the anime “From Scratch: A Guide to Survival in an Alternative World” is quite prosaic. An 18-year-old hikikomori, who has never done anything useful in his entire life, returns from shopping in the evening and finds himself in an alternative, fantasy world.
