Analysis of the number and military capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. I have relatives in the Russian Federation, but I didn’t invite the Russians here: how the youngest brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is fighting in the Donbass. A brigade of the Ukrainian army

The commander of the 2nd platoon of the 4th company of the 2nd battalion of the 128th mountain assault brigade, Captain Slobodchan, died from gunshot wounds received in the hospital due to a domestic quarrel between drunken Ukrainian militants. This was stated by the head of the press service of the DPR operational command, Daniil Bezsonov.

In addition, according to him, at the platoon stronghold of the 534th battalion of the 128th mountain assault brigade in the area of the village of Granitnoye, after drinking alcohol during a verbal altercation that turned into a brawl, private Romanyuk received a gunshot wound.

In turn, at the observation post of the 503rd battalion of the 36th Marine Brigade in the area of the village of Vodyanoye, as a result of careless handling of an RGD-5 hand grenade, arriving in a state of alcoholic intoxication, sailor Shatilo received shrapnel wounds.

The 53rd mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces became famous throughout the world after 46 servicemen left their place of residence at the Shirokiy Lan training ground on February 8, 2016. The reason for such desertion was the unbearable conditions of the soldiers’ stay at the place of duty. According to the servicemen and volunteers themselves, who are staying at the site of the Ukrainian troops, people lived for several months in tents without quality food, medicine, basic necessities and firewood for heating. Moreover, the soldiers were not paid. The deserted soldiers reached Nikolaev on foot to tell the military prosecutor about the current situation.

Combat mission of the 53rd brigade

The troops were stationed at the Shirokiy Lan training ground to conduct large-scale exercises. Before this, soldiers were trained in Cherkasy. It should be noted that more than 50% of the privates who served in military service were to be demobilized soon. Many experts wonder what is the point of sending guys to exercises if they will soon go home? For the first six months of their service, they spent time on the front line defending the country. It makes no sense to send soldiers on training maneuvers if they are soon to be demobilized.

Government comment on the current situation

One of the top officials in the Ukrainian government, presidential adviser Yu. Biryukov, commented on the situation related to the 53rd brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on his social page. network: “The soldiers of the 53rd Missile Brigade left their place of service without permission, thereby violating the Charter of Military Service. They must be severely punished."

After analyzing the charter, the adviser added the following: “The commanders of the 53rd brigade must be responsible for their subordinates and for the conditions of their stay in the field. Their responsibilities include preparing the camp. The officers were obliged to provide their soldiers with firewood and food in advance.”

Biryukov’s words, scattered throughout the country, caused a violent reaction from society. Ukrainians are actively discussing who will ultimately receive a severe punishment, a reprimand and lose a cash bonus.

Who is to blame for the demoralization of Ukrainian military personnel?

The soldiers from the 53rd brigade found themselves without proper conditions. Who is to blame for this? To understand this, you should know whose responsibilities include organizing the life of military personnel.

The privates of the 53rd separate brigade are responsible for setting up the tents. Soldiers must also obtain firewood themselves. Officers' responsibilities include:

  • timely delivery of food and medicines;
  • providing military personnel with quality treatment.

The leaders of the Shirokiy Lan training ground, where the 53rd brigade was stationed, did not bother to monitor the situation on their territory. The blame also lies with the Vostok command and rear officers.

Who commands the notorious brigade?

In the 53rd brigade, 3 commanders changed during the year. There are not enough mid-level officers, sergeants. Soldiers are recruited for service without proper selection, forcing everyone to join the army indiscriminately. Why create new military units if there are already understaffed ones?

In the 8th company, for quite a long time there was no commander who was able to manage people. The current commander of the 53rd brigade, Valery Vodolazsky, did not gain authority among his subordinates. The main reason is lack of attention to people and disrespectful attitude. The average age of a private is 35-40 years. Achieving authority among mature men is not an easy task.

The predecessor of the current commander was Colonel Yuri Belyakov. This man went through the Afghan war, losing an arm in battle. He tried to support the soldiers entrusted to his command; he was often noticed on the front line. Once he was blown up by a grenade during another round of the front line, as a result of which he was forced to leave his post. The fighters who were subordinate to him assured that he enjoyed authority because he was always in front. It will be difficult for other commanders to gain trust after Belyakov leaves.

Prosecutor's check

After they learned about the deplorable state of life of the military personnel, large-scale inspections were organized. The living conditions at the training ground of the 53rd mechanized brigade began to change for the better. Food began to be delivered on time, and the soldiers were examined by doctors. Those who wish can file a complaint with the commission, which is headed by Chief of the General Staff Viktor Muzhenko. Despite the fact that the soldiers who went to the military prosecutor's office without permission violated the regulations of military service, they were promised not to be punished.

Finding the culprits and punishing the command

Inspection authorities are trying to hush up the matter, blaming company commanders and ordinary employees for what happened. But the commander of the scandalous brigade, Vodolazsky, was decided not to be severely punished; he got off with a severe reprimand from his superiors.

If only junior officers are found guilty of poor maintenance of the Ukrainian army, and the senior command staff gets away with it, then there is no point in expecting justice in this matter, and similar situations will continue to occur. Not only the 8th company, but also almost all the troops in Ukraine who are taking part in the exercises are in a difficult situation.

Summarizing

Poor training, incompetent management and insufficient staffing are not the fault of the soldiers. All these problems must be solved by generals and colonels holding high positions. If soldiers during exercises instead of combat training deal with everyday problems, then the army will never become capable.

The strike of the 53rd brigade demonstrated to the whole society the disastrous state of the army. Those people who are responsible for army reform, for the country’s combat capability, and who have been entrusted with the lives of military personnel and civilians, should think about how to change the state of affairs.

That they are being thrown to slaughter.

The Ukrainian army is not happy with the “creeping offensive” tactics, which provoked retaliatory actions by the DPR armed forces near Avdievka, writes the online newspaper “Strana”.

The publication notes that earlier representatives of the Ministry of Defense stated that Ukrainian troops were advancing through “no man's land” in order to reach positions that were prescribed under the Minsk agreements.

The publication writes that this tactic is called “frog jumping” by the troops, and the result of the “creeping offensive” was that “Ukrainian troops actually entered the highway that connects Gorlovka and Donetsk, after which the separatists struck back.”

The author of the publication points out that the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and experts close to it claim the success of such tactics, supposedly allowing “to level the front line and occupy the most advantageous positions, which will be useful in the future both for defense and for a possible offensive.”

True, the soldiers of the 72nd brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, sent on the offensive near Avdievka, admitted to Strana that “frog jumping” is not very popular among the troops.

“From the point of view of the ATO headquarters, this is probably advisable - to shift our positions towards the separators by several hundred meters and level the front line. But at the level of ordinary fighters, those who have to carry it out, other conversations are heard. There are too many losses due to hundreds of meters of empty land that no one needs.

Some fighters begin to “get sick” before the attack. In general, they find any excuse not to move forward under fire because of the Napoleonic plans of the staff officers,” said a brigade officer named Andrei.

At the same time, junior sergeant Yuri from the same unit admits that they are sent to attack virtually without fire support.

« It seems we have the Minsk agreements, and we are given the order to attack.

Well, ok, then support the attack according to all the rules - with artillery, tanks, from the air. Instead, only infantry attacks - they are thrown forward like partisan sabotage detachments, which immediately suffer losses. All this raises a lot of questions for the command - why is this being done. And are some cunning political plans being decided at our expense?", the fighter complains.

Complain, don’t complain, but cunning plans are still decided at your expense, the idiot.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters are thinking about the Minsk Agreements.

They even started to “get sick”.

That's what "the magic kickstand does."

The “cyborgs” themselves complain that such a tactical move to “level the front line” led to a harsh response from the DPR troops and turned the “VSUshnikov” literally into “cannon fodder.”

=================================

PS. The Kiev junta does not even think of changing anything in its tactics, continuing to litter the lands of the South-East with the corpses of its punitive forces.

Apparently, all the artillery is busy shelling populated areas with civilians and takes little part in real battles.

Senseless attacks, mountains of unjustified “two hundredths”, barrage detachments - Kyiv’s “creeping offensive” more and more resembles the convulsive agony of a dying regime than a well-thought-out military operation. “ATO soldiers” increasingly refuse to go on the offensive, for which they receive shots in the back from barrier detachments consisting of “Pravosek” bandits.

Petro Poroshenko is literally throwing “to slaughter” the last representatives of the “most combat-ready army in Europe,” which is thinning out every day.

Review material on the reform of the mechanized brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using the example of the 14th separate mechanized brigade, which the Kiev regime tried to make exemplary.

Reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using the example of the 14th separate mechanized brigade.

The 14th mechanized brigade began to form in Vladimir Volynsky in December 2014. The leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the creation of a new military unit, but in reality it was only about the reorganization of the 51st mechanized brigade, which was actually destroyed in the Donbass. Without exaggeration, we can say that the 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade “proved” itself during the summer campaign of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Donbass. The brigade was demoralized back in May 2014 after the battle near Volnovakha. Subsequently, during the summer battles near Ilovaisk, the personnel of the formation simply fled from their positions. Based on the combination of failures in the summer of 2014, a decision was made to disband the 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade (more about the brigade’s actions in the summer campaign https://vk.com/wall-140312885_19688). On December 1, the 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade was disbanded. The brigade's equipment was transferred to other formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular, a large number of infantry fighting vehicles were transferred to the 28th mechanized brigade. However, some of the equipment went directly to the 14th Brigade, which became the successor to the 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade.

At the same time, in December 2014, the formation of the 14th mechanized brigade began. The personnel were recruited from among the military personnel of the disbanded 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade, in addition, the 1st Territorial Defense Battalion “Vinnitsa”, which received the name of the 1st Motorized Infantry Battalion, was included in the brigade. The brigade received BMP-1s that had been removed from storage and undergone repairs at a plant in Kharkov. Colonel Zhakun was appointed brigade commander.

The 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade avoided serious participation in the winter campaign of 2015, however, some of the units transferred to it from the disbanded 51st Brigade were present on the line of contact until March 2015. In particular, in February 2015, a T-64BV tank from the 14th Brigade was shot down. 1st OMBR.

By the spring of 2015, the brigade had a standard structure for the Armed Forces of Ukraine consisting of 3 mechanized, tank, repair and restoration battalions, as well as a logistics battalion. The brigade had a sapper and reconnaissance company, as well as electronic warfare, sniper and radioactive warfare companies. The brigade artillery group consists of a rocket division (BM-21 Grad), two self-propelled howitzer divisions

(on self-propelled guns 2S1 “Gvozdika” and 2S3 “Akatsiya”, respectively), as well as an anti-tank division armed with MT-12 “Rapira” anti-tank guns.

In April 2015, the brigade was transferred to the Donbass in the Mariupol direction. By September, the Marinka area became the main area of responsibility of the 14th Mechanized Brigade. The brigade's units operated in this area until April 2016, after which they were withdrawn from Donbass for rotation. According to official data, the brigade's losses during this period amounted to 38 people killed. It is curious that a significant part of the deaths were non-combat losses. In particular, on November 13, a serviceman of the 14th Mechanized Brigade shot three fellow soldiers, after which he committed suicide.

In the summer of 2016, they tried to make an exemplary formation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the brigade. In particular, its personnel were constantly preparing for various army competitions held in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The new government definitely needed to show the changes that had occurred in the country's army during the period of its reign. The 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade was ideally suited for this role. The public should have been shocked by the contrast when comparing the 51st Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces of the 2014 model and the 14th Brigade created on its basis by the new government. That is why perhaps the best personnel of the Ukrainian army were sent to train the 14th Mechanized Brigade. Indeed, careful work to improve combat training soon brought results. In September 2016, the brigade's tank platoon was recognized as the best at the all-army competition of tank platoons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, despite victories in competitions, during this period the brigade actually did not receive new military equipment. The units were still equipped with Soviet weapons removed from storage. The problem with the shortage of APU equipment was never resolved, which did not allow even the best units to be equipped with modern models.

In November 2016, the brigade was again sent to Donbass, this time to the Stanitsa Lugansk area. Throughout the year, until October 2017, units of the 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade took part in positional clashes on this section of the front line, after which they were put on rotation. The brigade's losses were very moderate and amounted to 14 people killed during this period. Again there were non-combat losses. In the summer of 2017, at least two military personnel were killed during conflicts with drunken colleagues.

The main success of 2017 for the 14th Brigade was the participation of its tank platoon in the “Strong Europe Tank Challenge 2017” tank competition in Grafenwiehr, (Germany). In this analogue of the “Tank Biathlon”, the team of the 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade took penultimate place, beating the Polish team.

The leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine positioned the performance of its military at competitions in Germany as a major success in building the country’s armed forces. Muzhenko promised that a real rain of modern military equipment would fall on the 14th Mechanized Brigade. Indeed, in March 2018, as many as six (!) T-84 vehicles, legendary in the Ukrainian segment of the Internet, Oplot tanks, were transferred to the brigade brigade. It was on these vehicles that the team of the 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade performed in April 2018 at the “Combined Resolve X” exercise, and will also participate in the Strong Europe Tank Challenge 2018 competition.”

In February 2018, the brigade received armored vehicles purchased from NATO countries. In fact, the “modern” military equipment turned out to be Polish BMP-1AK (Former Czech infantry fighting vehicles that ended up in Poland in a roundabout way). At one time, Ukraine inherited from the USSR one and a half thousand BMP-2 and 1800 BMP-1...

At the end of April, units of the 14th Mechanized Infantry Brigade were again redeployed to the Donbass, where they are currently holding positions in the Popasnaya area (LPR). The brigade's losses since the beginning of the rotation amounted, according to official figures, to 3 people killed.

In fact, using the example of the 14th Mechanized Brigade, one can trace the evolution that has occurred in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since the spring of 2014. On the one hand, from the objectively ineffective 51st mechanized brigade, destroyed in 2014, the new government created a formation that participates in international exercises and, in many respects, is one of the best in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, despite the success in demonstration competitions, the main part of the brigade’s weapons and military equipment is morally and physically outdated. Mechanized battalions are moving to BMP-1. The anti-tank division is armed with seasoned MT-12 Rapier anti-tank guns. Despite public statements about the creation in Ukraine of a new army close to NATO standards, in fact the equipment of even exemplary units remains at the level of a number of countries in Africa and the Middle East. The bulk of the equipment is still represented by samples from yesterday and the day before yesterday. Most of the successes in creating modern APUs are virtual.

During its participation in the battles in Donbass, the losses of the 14th Mechanized Brigade left, according to official data, at least 55 people killed.

57th motorized infantry brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during a punitive operation in Donbass

The formation of the 57th motorized infantry brigade began in the fall of 2014. The city of Kirovograd became the permanent location of the brigade. It is noteworthy that the brigade was formed exclusively on the basis of territorial defense battalions formed on the territory of the Kirovograd region. The brigade included the 17th APC "Kirovograd", the 34th APC "Batkivshchyna", as well as the 42nd APC "Rukh Opory". It is worth noting that in the summer of 2014, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine sent a combined company of the 42nd battalion to the relief blockade of the Ilovaisk pocket, where it was successfully defeated. More than half of the fighters of the combined company were captured. The brigade actually did not have its own armored vehicles; the number of BMP-1s did not exceed 10 (!) vehicles. In addition, the 42nd battalion, hereafter referred to as the motorized infantry battalion, had 13 BTR-70s. They tried to compensate for the lack of infantry fighting vehicles by transferring BRDM-2 from storage bases, as well as MTLB tractors, which were absolutely not intended for use on the battlefield. In addition, the brigade was reinforced with an engineering company. Already in 2015, a tank company and a division of towed howitzers were introduced into the 57th motorized infantry brigade. Colonel Krasilnikov was appointed the first commander of the brigade.

In November 2014, brigade units were deployed on the contact line in the area of Gorlovka (34th motorized infantry battalion) and Debaltsevo (42nd motorized infantry battalion). At the end of November, the 42nd battalion lost the first BTR-70, knocked out in the Debaltsevo area. By the end of 2014, the brigade's losses in manpower amounted to 8 people killed. By the beginning of 2015, units of the 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigade were scattered at checkpoints over a wide area from Konstantinovka in the south to Debaltsevo in the north. Thus, the 42nd battalion, reinforced by an engineering company, operated with the main forces in the area of the so-called “Debaltsevo ledge”, and one of its companies was located in Konstantinovka. The main forces of the 17th Kirovograd battalion operated in the same area. The 34th Batkivshchyna battalion was stationed in the Gorlovka area.

During the battles for the Donetsk airport, the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, experiencing an acute shortage of armored vehicles, tried to use the MTLB of the 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigade to try to break through to the “cyborgs” blocked in the New Terminal. One tractor, not intended for use on the battlefield, was damaged and was captured by the militia as a trophy. One soldier of the 17th battalion was killed, another was captured. On January 21, in Konstantinovka, a drunken soldier of the 42nd battalion "Rukh Opory" shot three colleagues. During the winter battles near Debaltsevo, an BTR-70 from the brigade was shot down; in total, at least 9 of its servicemen were killed during the fighting in this direction.

During this period, the main forces of the 34th battalion fought fierce positional battles near Gorlovka. After the conclusion of Minsk-2, units of the 42nd battalion withdrawn from the Debaltsevo direction were transferred to Gorlovka. The units of the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade, not provided with armored vehicles and artillery, were actually only suitable for holding positions at checkpoints. However, until May 2016, units of the 57th Motorized Rifle Brigade fought positional battles in one of the hottest points of the front line near the village of Zaitsevo, losing a total of 40 people killed. It is the fighters of the 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigade who bear a significant share of responsibility for numerous cases of ceasefire violations in this direction. The DPR fighters were especially annoyed by snipers from the brigade. In early December 2015, the command of the People's Militia of the DPR transferred the most trained snipers to Gorlovka, who within a few days destroyed at least 4 snipers of the 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigade during sniper duels.

In May 2016, the brigade was withdrawn from the so-called ATO zone and transferred to the border with Crimea.

In July 2017, the 57th Motorized Rifle Brigade was transferred to the Peskov area near Donetsk, where it continues to fight to this day. It is curious that when the 92nd mechanized brigade was withdrawn from the front line for rotation in October 2017, several of its former fighters, who had previously served in the Azov regiment, joined the 42nd battalion "Rukh Opory". One of them, the Georgian nationalist Suralidze, was killed on October 31 during a clash near Donetsk airport. In the new year 2018, the brigade was noted for the loss of a BRDM-2 in Sands, which was blown up by an anti-tank mine. In this case, 2 soldiers of the 34th Batkivshchyna battalion were killed. The brigade's losses since July 2017 amount to at least 10 people killed. At the moment, the 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigade continues to hold positions in the Peski area on the contact line.

The 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade, like all 4 motorized infantry brigades, is a typical ersatz formation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, created during the war in Donbass. Lacking sufficient artillery and armored vehicles, it is intended only to hold positions at checkpoints and has no actual combat value. The total losses of the brigade in the Donbass amounted to 77 people killed, in addition, 3 BTR-70, MTLB and BRDM-2 of the 57th Motorized Rifle Brigade were destroyed. Two more MTLB tractors became trophies for the defenders of Donbass. The 57th brigade suffered perhaps the most serious losses among the motorized infantry brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which was due to its location in one of the “hottest” sections of the front line near Gorlovka in 2015 - early 2016. At the moment, along with three motorized infantry battalions, the brigade includes a reconnaissance, engineer and sapper, medical, tank company, and a sniper platoon. The artillery component is represented by an artillery division, as well as a division of MT-12 Rapier anti-tank guns. The brigade was assigned an anti-aircraft artillery division. The 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade does not have a sufficient number of infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, and in fact its personnel travel on trucks. BRDM-2 and MTLB tractors are used in large quantities, some of which are armed with twin ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns.
