The plot of the picture illustrates one of the moments of the Russian fairy tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf". According to the plot of the tale, Ivan Tsarevich, together with his beloved Elena the Beautiful, escapes from the chase on gray wolf.

She is dressed in a beautiful light blue silk caftan with a gold border on the sleeves. The neck is decorated with pearl beads of unprecedented beauty. Beautiful boots are on the feet. Her head is covered by a hat adorned with precious stones.

The girl laid her head on the prince's chest, trusting her savior with a thoughtful look. The princess gave her fate to the reliable young prince Ivan Tsarevich and meekly folded her hands in her lap. Elena the Beautiful is depicted by the artist's brush as his memory of his niece Natalia.

The Gray Wolf is depicted in motion. He rushes forward with all his strength so as not to be overtaken. The ears of the mythical wolf are flattened to the head, the tongue falls out of the huge mouth, but its eyes radiate confidence and calmness. Strong paws push the animal off the ground to take the next step through the swamp.

Fairy tale characters are depicted against the backdrop of a landscape. It is obvious that their path lies through a dense forest, as evidenced by trees overgrown with green moss with torn and cracked bark. In such a forest, it is dark and scary, as if evil forces surrounded the main characters. Impenetrable thickets rise around, and branches with snags make it difficult to quickly escape. Beautiful white lilies growing in the swamp and pale pink buds of an old apple tree with green leaves imply hope for a happy ending.

The picture is skillfully filled with contrasting colors, where the black paint of the forest is responsible for the symbol of otherworldly forces, danger and excitement. The struggle between good and evil is also present in this picture, but as in any story from the old famous fairy tales good will surely prevail over evil.

In the midst of the terrible dense forest the characters look so contrastingly - the piercing blue dress of the princess and coquettish boots embroidered with gold, Ivan's light-sand caftan and the gray-brown fur of a huge wolf, which runs with large jumps and tries to save its riders from misfortune.

In a forest filled with gloomy and heavy fantasies, apple-tree flowers bloom as a symbol of invincible love and beauty. They are so thin, tender and vulnerable that it seems - the slightest breath and the color will fall off. However, Vasnetsov added this allegory for a reason, he wanted to strengthen the impression of two lovers and the effect of the approaching chase. The conceived painter succeeded. "Ivan Tsarevich on a gray wolf" is an integral and complete plot of a fairy tale. Looking at it, you always want to re-read it again and again.
