The musical Jekyll & Hyde at the Musical Comedy Theatre. Musical "Jekyll and Hyde"

About the musical Jekyll and Hyde

We rarely think about the fact that in a person there are two principles good and evil. Between these two principles there is also an eternal struggle within us. And what happens if these two beginnings are divided among themselves?

In the musical Jekyll and Hyde, you will find answers to all these polls that have long interested a person.

Origin story of the musical Jekyll and Hyde

This musical appeared thanks to Frank Wildhorn and Steve Kaden in the late 1980s, but was never produced due to lack of funds. A little later, in 1990, Leslie Bricusse completely remade the libretto of the musical Jekyll and Hyde. The musical was later shown at the Alley Theater in Houston, starring ol Wilkinson and Linda Eder, who later released a famous concept album.

The story of the musical Jekyll and Hyde begins with the insane immobilized father of Mr. Jekyll being brought to the mental hospital. Mr. Jekyll suggested that the consequence of his father's illness was the evil that lived in his nutria. And he puts forward the theory that if you separate the good and the evil, then such whitening can be cured.

After which he turns with permission to the heads of the Hospital "Saint Jude": General Lord Glossop, Bishop Basingstoke, Lady Beaconsfield, Lord Savage, Sir Archibald Proops, and Sir Danvers to conduct experiments on patients, but is soon refused. Then he decides to experiment on himself. This is where Mr. Hyde comes in. Mr. Hyde is Mr. Jekyll's evil inclination.

Hyde is more determined than Jekyll, does not shun anything, cruel, a killer. Jackie disappears for a week, and even friends Emma (Jekyll's fiancee) and Utterson (Friend) find out from Jekyll's butler - Poole, where has he gone?

But he spends a lot of time in the lab. When Hoyd appears, Jekyll disappears. After which Hyde mercilessly kills many people: Bishop Basingstoke, Glossop, Savage, Lady Beaconsfield, Sir Proops, Glossop and Savage. After that, Hyde kills the prostitute Lucy Harris, because she was in love with Jekyll and then reincarnates again and Jekyll was in the place of the killer.

Now Hyde can appear whenever he wants, regardless of Jekyll. And Jekyll understands that this is already an integral part of him. And he's trying to find a way to get rid of it.

It all ends at Jekyll's wedding to Emma. Where Hyde appears and ruthlessly kills Stride, and takes Emma hostage.

But the girl's words give Jekyll the power to control Hyde after that. Jekyll appears and asks Utterson to finish him off, thus destroying Hyde. Utterson kills Jekyll with a Lever and Emma mourns over his body.

Recently visited new musical Theater of Musical Comedy - "Jekyll and Hyde". I confess that, initially, I went to this performance in order to see my favorite artists in new images, and I never thought that this project would amaze me to the core with its idea, which was brought to life by the production team led by the Hungarian director Miklós Gabor Kerenyi (Kero). I definitely did not expect that the performance would evoke in me a huge number of diverse emotions and make me think about the questions that everyone asks himself sooner or later: who am I and what am I?
So what is this show about?
The plot of the novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson was taken as the idea. I usually don't like projects created "inspired by" famous works because they lose the idea of what the author wanted to say. But in this musical, the meaning of Stevenson's great work has not changed, but has been supplemented, thanks to the introduction of new interesting actors. In this performance, everyone will see something of their own, everyone will understand this tragic story souls of a single person in their own way. Personally, I saw and understood the following. The human soul is dark, it is impossible to fully understand a person, and this applies not only strangers, this also applies to you. We do not see the true face of a person, even if he is the most dear to us. It is necessary to understand that there is good and evil in everyone and everything depends on our inner choice. You must accept yourself as you are and not try to play a role or separate your two essences. It is mine Subjective opinion, perhaps someone else will understand this performance in their own way, because this is what the theater is for. It helps us understand ourselves and find answers to our inner questions.
One of the main components of this production is the music of the famous American composer Frank Wildhorn. In my opinion, each musical theme- hit. In addition, the music in "Jekyll and Hyde" is diverse. It is such due to the fact that the performance reflects both light and dark sides life. The music shows Jekyll's love for his bride Emma, her tender feelings for him, shows Hyde's passion for vicious Lucy, shows the fear and tension of people living in the slums, reflects the inner torment, suffering, doubts of the characters: Emma, Lucy, Jekyll and others. I cannot fail to note the amazing work of the orchestra, under the direction of maestro Alexei Nefedov. Instrumental music organically complemented the amazing voices.
It is impossible not to note the libretto of this performance, because it is thanks to the words spoken from the stage that we learn the thoughts of the characters and ask ourselves questions. For example, one of the most striking fragments of the performance is a number in psychiatric clinic, where patients talk about human nature, they ask each other and the viewer the question - "what is the facade hiding?". Dr. Jekyll sings the following - "I must know what demons are hidden in the human soul, how a person, succumbing to them, loses his mind and peace." But until the end of the performance, these same "demons" are not announced aloud, it is understood that everyone will decide for himself. The vicious Lucy's aria "New Life" does not give the viewer an answer what a new life is for her: a change of residence or the rebirth of her soul in a new pure guise. Thus, the viewer has the opportunity to reason.
The direction of the play is amazing. Each number is like a hint, like a question, they say, the viewer, think for yourself what it all means. For example, I remember bright number of the play, Emma and Lucy's duet "In His Eyes", the girls sing about their mutual love for Dr. Jekyll, but at the same time they do strange things. Emma, the pure, romantic bride of Jekyll, takes off her snow-white robe and goes to Lucy's place, takes her red scarf and wraps it around, and at the same time she stands in the place of the bride and puts on her clothes. Also, a similar question arises during Lucy's aria "New Life", when during this song a little girl enters the stage and the heroine hugs her with love and tenderness, but the girl does not stay with Lucy, she leaves. The viewer has a question - “Who is this girl: the future daughter of the heroine or is she herself in the“ new life ”. The ending of the performance remains open. Main character dies and the viewer involuntarily asks the question: who died - Jekyll or Hyde?
The entourage of the musical corresponds to the time in which the action takes place. The scenery helps the viewer to get into a specific corner of London: the house of the aristocrat Sir Carew, which is luxuriously furnished and in which an atmosphere of calm and harmony reigns; to the laboratory of Dr. Jekyll, where on every wall there are some leaflets with records, flasks and test tubes are arranged; to the criminal district of London, in particular to the "Red Pub", where an atmosphere of passion and lust reigns. Great amount special effects: the fire will light up with a bright flame, then fireworks will appear in the sky. The scenery is complemented by a projection, for example: streets in an area where poor people live. Of no small importance is the light in this production, it not only reflects the change of day and night, but also the emotions that the characters experience, namely the light of the soul or its shadow.
The choreography is multifaceted with its bright choreographic productions, which reflect the atmosphere of the place in which the action takes place: in a psychiatric hospital, or in Sir Carew's house, or in the Red Pub. Mass choreographic numbers were performed synchronously and dynamically, which characterizes the coherence of the work of the ensemble and the ballet.
Not to mention the work of the artists this project. When I was just planning to go to this performance, I looked at the cast and was pleasantly surprised, because almost all the artists played in the legendary musical "Dance of the Vampires", which ended last summer, and those who did not play in this musical played in others no less popular and famous projects. Therefore, when I went to the performance, I knew that I would see the well-coordinated work of a whole team of talented artists. And so it happened. Everyone, without exception, shone on stage.
I want to note that in the musical "Jekyll and Hyde" an important place is occupied by actor play, not to the detriment of the vocal numbers. All artists have unique strong voices and at the same time very believably reflect the thoughts, feelings and emotions of their characters. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde performed by Rostislav Kolpakov is incomparable! He is not only a wonderful vocalist, who owns all the colors of his voice, but also a master of reincarnation! The artist showed the metamorphoses of Jekyll through plasticity and a change in the delivery of voice when singing. It's amazing how skillfully all this is performed by one person! I really liked the performers of the main female roles: Emma performed by Elena Gazaeva and Lucy performed by Natalia Dievskaya. Very different images these heroines, but you are so imbued and sympathize with the fate of each of them that tears involuntarily well up.
In my opinion, the musical "Jekyll and Hyde" is one of the brightest musical events of the year, so I recommend everyone to visit this performance and join the world of musical and theatrical art.

The plot of the musical "Jekyll and Hyde" oddly enough, has almost nothing in common
with the famous story by Robert Louis Stevenson. Of course, you will meet both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but forget about the portly old kind man and the evil freak. The musical will introduce completely different characters, although they may seem familiar.
In 1931, Hollywood director Ruben Mamulian (later famous for "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor) filmed his own version of the story of a doctor who wished to separate good and evil in order to overcome unbearable conditions. secular society that do not allow the gentleman to show his true feelings. The two poles between which Jekyll rushes were embodied by his upper-class bride and a prostitute he happened to meet. The film became a world classic, and the brilliant handsome Frederic March won an Oscar for his performance in the title role. Ten years later, in the wake of the success of the first film, Victor Fleming (creator of the famous " Gone with the wind") shoots a remake, giving female roles two blondes Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman: complicating the intrigue, he made the girls in love with Jekyll a kind of reflection of each other.
There is no doubt that it was these productions that inspired the American creators of the musical in 1997. Leslie Bricusse, the author of the libretto, supplemented the contradictions between love and passion with the conflict between reason and madness, adding two "voices of reason" to the plot - Jekyll's friend of the bride, persuading the girl to leave her work-obsessed fiance, and also the best friend of the doctor himself, just as persistently persuading him don't quit your job.
Composer Frank Wildhorn, completely subjugated the musical parts
theme of duality and confrontation within the protagonist and his environment, with the ease of the music itself, bringing the conflict to social level and bringing it back inside human soul. Actually, knowing the plot, you can listen to the parts in any language - the music explains everything itself. Bricusse said "I immediately fell in love with Frank's music - melodies rich in dramatic effects, created in a breathtaking modern style- and writing the first draft of the musical was, figuratively speaking, just a picnic."
After a resounding success on Broadway, the musical was staged in eleven more countries. At one time, arias from "Jekyll and Hyde" as independent hits were performed by Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion.
In St. Petersburg, the second wave of popularity of musicals is directly related to the Theater musical comedy, namely the franchised Austrian production
"Dance of the Vampires" by Roman Polanski. Lasted in the repertoire for almost three years with the same full house at extremely high price for tickets, the performance became truly cult, making the performers involved in it the leading artists of Russian musicals.
"Jekyll & Hyde" was released to replace "The Vampire's Ball", and it is not surprising that the troupe engaged in the previous production automatically switched to the new one. The performers who made their presence known in the "Ball" have two decisive features: excellent vocals and truly fantastic charisma. The actors are definitely engaging.
The relative conciseness of the scenery and costumes that do not have a strict reference to a particular era (director of the original Russian version Artistic Director of the Budapest Operetta and Musical Kero Theatre) provide the actors with a wide field for interpretation. This allows you to play out the story as in the spirit Victorian England and plays by Oscar Wilde, as well as in a universal timeless context, interpreting the image of Hyde from Jack the Ripper to infernal evil in the style of David Lynch. Despite almost a hundred past performances, the musical is not varnished, the artists play with full dedication, and each time they are looking for a way to unfold the plot in a new way, to give it a new intonation.
Nabokov, studying the story, wrote “Stevenson hated cruelty more than anything in the world, and the inhuman scoundrel he created was shown not in a fit of animal lust, whatever it was, but in a moment of bestial indifference to the suffering of the people he maims and kills” . But when furious, sensual and overflowing with euphoria, Hyde soars over the roofs of London to the breathtaking accompaniment of an orchestra shouting "I'm free, I'm here, I'm alive! This is the first time I've been like this - I'm alive!" it becomes obvious how insipid the positive Jekyll looks next to the completely unprejudiced scoundrel Hyde. An emotionally highly charged production will drag the viewer along through love, passion, devotion, madness, freedom and a cage, allowing him to make his own choice in the finale.
Today "Jekyll and Hyde" is one of the the best performances Petersburg, not only among musical, but also among dramatic productions.

Somehow I can’t tell you about the musical right away without telling you about what became its basis and how it developed.

So, if you haven't read strange story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I highly recommend that you do so. The story is short, does not take much time, but is read in one breath. By the way, this work is included in school curriculum on literature. But I think that many masterpieces go unnoticed at school.

So, the story itself was written by the Scottish writer Robert Stevenson ( yes, yes, "Treasure Island" is also his) and was published on January 5, 1886. Stevenson wrote the main part of the text of the story in three days, i.e. just lightning fast. The fate of the writer is very interesting, you can easily get acquainted with it without my help. Personally, I was interested to know that Stevenson was a lawyer by training, and in his youth he wanted to marry a singer from a night tavern ( "My Precious Lucy").

Time passed, and the theme of the struggle of "rival twins" - good and evil, does not want to become obsolete. In the 1980s, American composer Frank Wildhorn and screenwriter Steve Cuden form the basis of the musical Jekyll & Hyde. (! the musical is very different from Stevenson's story). The premiere took place in May 1990, in Houston, Texas.

The musical was breaking records, the box office was going through the roof. In 1997, Jekyll & Hyde went on Broadway, later went to England and began to conquer the world. He traveled to Sweden, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. Was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor, Costumes, Lighting and Choreography. This was followed by recordings, CDs, concerts, films and series.

In Russia, the musical was staged for the first time in 2005, at the Moscow State Academic Theater named after Mossovet. Who has a desire, musical performance in two parts” can be viewed in 2015. In the role of Jekyll / Hyde, Alexander Domogarov and Valery Anokhin.

In 2014, rehearsals began for the production of the musical project Jekyll & Hyde in St. Petersburg. The Hungarian director Kero, as it became clear from the press conference, approached the rehearsal process very emotionally, but the result was not long in coming. For almost a year now, the musical has been sold out. At the end of each performance, the audience rises from their seats to express their gratitude to the talented artists.

Well, okay))) Here I am, I will write a new admiration post)))

As if the trick is that this is more about St. Petersburg residents, but not only, because no one has canceled rail and air transport, right? And for the sake of a good cause, it’s worth rolling into St. Petersburg.

A Good Deed is a new musical that has replaced Vampire's Ball. It's called Jekyll and Hyde. There was once a Broadway production and productions all over the world, and even in Moscow, at the Moscow City Council Theater, Domogarov played in a similar musical. But not like this. They bungled the "original" version, such as the director's cut, for us. Without going into unnecessary details, I will say that in comparison with the official Broadway recording, our musical wins significantly, because the recording at one time seemed to me terribly boring garbage with some adult uncles)))

Okay, let's make a discount that I watched the video version when I just started to get involved in musicals, I was 17 years old, and I downloaded this musical from Emul (shkolota can't understand!).

In any case, I didn’t expect anything from our production, so I whined for almost a year that they were putting on some kind of crap and after the “Ball” they would fail, everyone would stop going to them.

"How wrong you were, Nastya!" - I said to myself, walking for the 4th time in two months))))

For "ITOZHISHYDEVR!!!" and not even sarcasm.

In this masterpiece, the whole company plays the same as in the Ball, with only minor changes and inclusions. Jackllohide is played by Kirill Gordeev, Rostislav Kolpakov and Ivan Ozhogin.

We all saw the first in the role of the indefatigable Herbert in BV, as well as the insanely beautiful Gray in " scarlet sails". Not so long ago, I also saw him in the new musical (by the way, also incredibly good!) "Hollywood Diva". Everywhere Kirill is very pleasant, sings well, dances well, plays. Being Jekyllohide in the first cast is what he well deserved. And coped with the role brilliantly, everyone is delighted with him. I also really, really liked him, although not without flaws.

Third - famous person, "every dog in the alley knows my light gait"))) He was unimaginably good in the role of Count von Krolock, not bad at solo concerts and absolutely no (in my vision) in the role of Lubitsch in "Field Negri". He also plays Woland in The Master and Margarita, but I haven’t seen him there yet, it didn’t happen. He has a lot of fans, and I used to consider myself one of them too, but his sameness on stage became boring to me, and I realized that he was a hostage of one image and would not soon be able to amaze me with something. With the role of Jekillohide, he coped averagely, in my opinion, but I was already pecked for this look, yes)))

And here is the second one - this is my vanlav and joy of the heart))) I spotted him in the Ball of the Vampires first in the role of Herbert, not so much for the image, but for the variety of them, I like improvisational actors. Then one day I saw him in the same place in the image of Count von Krolock and ... and stopped going to Ozhogin)))) Then I saw him as Ginny in the musical "Aladdin" and as Woland in "The Master and Margarita". In general, my heart was thrilled by beauty, talent and voice, Rostik steadfastly reminded me of Zhoydik in some aspects of his game, which made me even more thrilled (no wonder, because Rostik is a student of Viktyuk, well, you understand, right? Nastya has a trained eye) . And when we had already bought a ticket for "Jekyll and Hyde", it turned out that it was Rostislav who would play that day. We were delighted.

But honestly, I didn't expect that. These were my musical Handmaidens, and I sat open-mouthed and amazed. I immediately liked many of the arias, I liked the costumes, the music, the dancing, the plot. Main character- an unrealistically complex dramatic and technical role, one actor plays two characters, turning into them in front of an astonished audience. Rostik changed his voice for both characters - he speaks and sings with Jekyll a little higher, and Hydom goes down a lot. It turns out a huge difference in voice, and as if there are really two different person. Both plasticity and gait are changing. It's collosal acting work and he made it to the million. I didn’t leave the theater, I flew out! I bought a ticket for the next block, and then two more, and now I'm sitting and waiting for trains to buy tickets again)))

My soul rejoices in the mass positive feedback about Rostik, he was not very loved in BV (well, many "experts" write reviews in the style of "I haven't seen it, but I still don't like it"), now only ardent Ozhogin fans don't like him, because people are getting sick of Kolpakov, and even uses phrases like "After I saw Kolpakov, I won't spend any more money on Ozhogin"))))) In general, a whole war of fans is already unfolding, which cannot but rejoice, because this artist is really wonderful, and they should be admired.

But the performance is gorgeous not only by Rostik, there is generally an amazing cast, and everything, absolutely everyone makes the performance great. Each of the actors plays uniquely, so when you watch different formulations as if you see different performances. Therefore, it is not surprising that you want to go there endlessly))

Honestly - for me this performance was even better than "Vampire's Ball". Hooked harder. BV is a parody, there is a little cartoonishness, and DH is a dramatic performance, which is what I like more. In BV it was not allowed to improvise, and all the performances were very similar, but here every time it was like the first time. And after the performance, there is something to discuss, for the second month we have been corresponding with the Deffkans in private, moreover, not so much about the actors as about the characters. In general, we are discussing.

So, my friends, who read to the end, I strongly recommend you. There will be no tours, do not hope, so go to St. Petersburg. This masterpiece is waiting for you)))

In the meantime, here's a chic video for you, or rather, even so - GORGEOUS (with chic music), in which you will see all the dramatic power of this performance.

History of creation

Frank Wildhorn and Steve Kaden Steve Cuden) wrote the libretto, music and lyrics of the future musical in the late 1980s, but for financial reasons it was not staged. In 1990 the libretto and lyrics were revised by Leslie Bricusse and the show was staged at the theater Alley Theater Houston, starring Colm Wilkinson and Linda Eder. The same performers recorded the so-called concept album.

The performance was shown until 1995, after which the production was transferred to 5th Avenue Musical Theater Seattle. In August of the same year, the musical went on a tour of US cities. It premiered on Broadway on April 28, 1997. Here the roles Jekyll And Haida performed by Robert Cuzzioli, Linda Eder - parts Lucy. In 1999, the line-up of performers was reorganized and the performance made its second North American tour of 39 cities.

A new version of the musical was created in 2001 in Westchester Broadway Theater, NY. In 2007, with the participation of thrash metal guitarist Alex Shkolnik, an album was released called Jekyll&Hyde: Resurrection.

Synopsis

The performance begins with the words of Jekyll: “In each of us there are two beginnings. If this primitive duality of good and evil could be divided into two components, life would become much easier. The curse of humanity is that these opposites are constantly fighting within each person. His lawyer and best friend John Utterson brings viewers up to speed by telling separate fragments from the life of Doctor Jekyll.

The action is transferred back some time, to the ward psychiatric hospital, where the paralyzed and mentally large father of Jekyll was determined ("Lost in the Darkness / Lost in the Darkness"). Jekyll believes that the root cause of his father's illness is evil in his soul. He is seized with a passion to find out why good and evil live in a person, and makes attempts to separate these opposites ("I Need to Know / I must know").

Some time later, the viewer sees the rich and poor of 19th century London recount the deeds of the people of that time. About how they want to be seen by others and no matter who they really are in the shower (“Facade / Facade”). Later, Jekyll presents his research plan to the Board of Governors of St. Jude's Hospital: Bishop Basingstoke, General Lord Glossop, Lady Beaconsfield, Sir Archibald Proops, Lord Savage and Sir Danvers. All of them, with the exception of Danvers, Jekyll's future father-in-law, are pompous and rich hypocrites. Jekyll's proposal to conduct an experiment on a living person is rejected with cries of "sacrilege, blasphemy, heresy, and the insanity of the Doctor" by five votes against and one abstention by Danvers ("Board of Governors / Board of Governors").

That evening, Danvers hosts a reception for his daughter Emma's imminent wedding to Dr. Jekyll ("Facade Reprise"). Here there is the upper class of society, the Board of Governors and Simon Stride, Jekyll's rival, who has been in love with Emma since childhood. He persuades Emma to give up this stupid and senseless idea with the wedding, but the girl does not give in and quickly "rejects" him. Jekyll, late as usual, arrives for the evening just as all the guests have left to watch the fireworks. He and Emma enjoy being alone. ("Take Me as I Am / Accept me as / such as / as I am").

After the reception, Jekyll and Utterson go to the disreputable Red Pub (Dregs in some versions) for a bachelor party. There they watch a show of dancers, leading role featuring prostitute Lucy Harris ("Bring on the Men" - changed to "Good "n" Evil in the Broadway version). After the show, Utterson is taken away by another prostitute, while Lucy and Jekyll remain at the table ("Here's to the Night"). As soon as the moment of the kiss comes, Utterson returns and he and Jekyll leave. Jekyll leaves Lucy his business card.

As soon as Utterson and Jekyll return to the elite part of town, Utterson notices that Jekyll's mood has improved. Jekyll replies that he has found a person on whom he can conduct his experiment. Utterson advises him to go to bed soon. Against his friend's advice, Jekyll goes to the lab ("This is the Moment"). By mixing pre-prepared ingredients, he gets the HJ7 formula and drinks it (in many versions he injects himself into a vein on his arm). After a few minutes, he turns into a disgusting human-like animal ("Transformation"). He gets out and wanders the streets, reveling in the sights and sounds of London, including meeting Lucy. He calls himself Edward Hyde ("Alive").

A week after that, nothing is heard from Jekyll. Emma and Utterson ask Jekyll's butler Poole where he is. After Emma leaves, Poole tells Utterson that Jekyll has been hiding in his laboratory all this time. Jekyll appears and asks Poole to bring him the required chemical components. Utterson tries to talk him out of this experiment ("His Work and Nothing More").

WITH calling card in hand, Lucy comes to Jekyll's house with a terrible bruise on her back. While Jekyll processes him, Lucy reveals that a man named Hyde did it. Jekyll is stunned by this message, but does not show it. In love with him, Lucy kisses Jekyll ("Sympathy, Tenderness"). Ending this wonderful moment, Jekyll leaves Lucy, who wonders about her love for him ("Someone Like You").

Later, Bishop Basingstoke is seen walking down the street with a prostitute. As she leaves, Hyde appears and bludgeons the bishop to death with his cane ("Alive - Reprise"), end of the first act.

Second act. London people discuss last news: murder of a bishop. At his funeral, General Glossop and Lord Savage leave the church, leaving vile remarks about the murdered man. Hyde suddenly reappears and stabs Glossop while Savage flees. Again, the inhabitants of London begin to discuss the second murder. Jekyll is seen in a pharmacy with big amount purchased chemicals. Later, Savage, Sir Proops, and Lady Beaconsfield drunkenly leave the wake, leaving nasty comments about the lower class townspeople. Again, Hyde springs out of the darkness, stabbing Proops with one hand and grabbing Lady Beaconsfield by the neck. Savage again narrowly escapes. The city reacts violently to the double homicide for the third time. Danvers meets Savage at the train station. Savage says he is leaving town for his own safety. Danvers heads home just as Hyde breaks Savage's neck and throws him onto the tracks ("Murder, Murder").

Emma finds Jekyll distraught and despondent in the lab. She tells him that she loves him, that she can't live without him, and asks him to confide in her ("Once Upon a Dream"). She leaves, and Jekyll confronts the fact that Hyde has become an integral part of him ("Obsession / Obsession"). Meanwhile, Lucy and Emma perform a duet about their love for Jekyll ("In His Eyes"). The action returns to the Red Rat Inn, where Lucy is visited by Jekyll, who appears to have some sort of animal control over her ("Dangerous Game").

Utterson arrives at Jekyll's house, but finds Hyde in the lab. Hyde drinks the formula and transforms back into Jekyll. He tells Utterson that he can defeat Hyde in himself if he has enough of the required chemicals. Utterson leaves to buy them. Jekyll begins to console himself with the hope that he will soon have all the necessary components ("Angst 2 / Longing 2"). Utterson visits Lucy at the Red Rat to deliver money and a letter from Jekyll. In the letter, he reads to Lucy that the Doctor asks her to leave the city forever and start new life in the other place. After Utterson leaves, Lucy sings about the new horizons her life with Jekyll opens up ("A New Life"). It is at this moment that Hyde returns and, noticing Jekyll's letter, slowly and brutally kills Lucy ("Reprise Sympathy, Tenderness / Sympathy, Tenderness - Reprise"). Suddenly, the reverse transformation occurs and Jekyll finds himself in the place of Lucy's killer.

Soaked in blood, Jekyll returns to the laboratory and tries to face off against Hyde in the final battle, from which only one can get out alive ("Confrontation / Confrontation").

It would seem that everything was over, and Jekyll defeated Hyde in himself. But a few weeks later, on the day of his wedding to Emma, at the moment when it is necessary to say cherished words"Yes, I do," Hyde breaks out of Jekyll with a wild cry. He immediately kills Stride and takes Emma hostage. But Emma's voice gives Jekyll the strength to take control of Hyde. He asks Utterson to kill him and, by extension, the Hyde in him. Finally, Utterson fires his revolver at Jekyll. The play ends with Emma crying over Jekyll's lifeless body.
